To not like the way DH eats his boiled eggs?

HibiscusDubonnet · 24/02/2024 14:08

It’s messy and it makes no sense.

DH boils his eggs and then puts them on his buttered toast. He then cuts them in half, puts one half in the egg cup, puts in a soldier but the yolk spurts out as there is no shell to accommodate the extra toast volume. The yolk dribbles down the side and his fingers are all buttery as he touched the egg which has been sitting in melted butter so everything else he touches is all buttery.

And then he asks me how I eat my boiled eggs so neatly and how does the egg cup stay clean? And then we argue because he says he’s a grown man with a grown up job and he can eat his eggs the way he wants to. And I say why did you ask me then?

No diagram but I have photos if you want them.

AIBU: he can eat them the way he wants to fgs
YANBU: it’s a waste of egg and butter

Divorce him
Or if you are reading this, OH, divorce her and find someone who doesn't care how you eat a boiled chucky egg 😃

There's more to life than air frying, Jan!

My favourite quote on here ever! Grin

HearMeSnore · 24/02/2024 15:43

OMG YANBU!!! How have you not kicked him out???

I fully accept that everyone has their own preferences but that is just a crime against food on a par with making tea in the microwave.

Have showed this to DH and he is quite impressed. Something for Fathers Day, methinks.

It was a humanities degree, not engineering.

That explains a lot actually.

Has he explained why he decided to argue after you gave your answer? Because that is not normal either.

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 24/02/2024 15:50

@HibiscusDubonnet cant you teach him how to poach an egg using only a pot of boiling water?? his mum must have taught him to eat like that! when you go out to restaurants, do you have him sitting facing the wall, cos I would!!

NoSnowdrop · 24/02/2024 15:52

Since you’ve raised this vital topic about boiled eggs, it’s reminded me about my DH who also eats them “wrong”!!

This is his method (sorry no pics):

Boils egg, puts in egg cup, so far so good… then… peels the shell off. WTAF?

My method (the correct way):

Boils egg, puts in egg cup, expertly wields knife and cleanly chops off the top, ready for soldiers.

Also, in my forties and I’ll never stop eating boiled eggs with soldiers, it’s the only way!

sorry to jump on your thread like this OP, your DH is a wrong ‘un.

Actually, it’s me arguing with him as he says he’s a grown man and he can eat the eggs any way he wants to while I probe him to get some rational explanation for it all.

I usually beat mine up in a cup which is both tidy & comfortingly reminiscent of childhood and allows for the correct amount of half a block of butter

The battleground here is scrambled eggs which we just had to segregate out in the end

I nuke mine with a ton of butter & eat from said bowl with fork I used to add butter & scramble them, toast tucked into edges

DC uses variety of knives, forks, spoon, whisk (occasionally) bowls, plates & scrambles in saucepan with never enough butter

So if I were OP I’d say ‘DH go for your buttery-fingered, yolk-splattered, toast-crumbed life’ but the mess would be sat there until he cleaned it up himself

HibiscusDubonnet · 24/02/2024 15:55

That would have to be a very well boiled egg @NoSnowdrop otherwise the runny white would explode all over the table. Then I would definitely LTB.

It does look very messy but each to their own. I have recently discovered poaching eggs in the microwave - it is amazing. They come out perfectly round and no annoying white bits left in the pan afterwards

Caerulea · 24/02/2024 16:12

What the actual shit is that?!

Are you sure he's an actual human man & hasn't just read about How To Human in a book?

Does he peel the whole shell? Imo the gold standard would be to tap the top with a teaspoon, peel about a third of the shell off, then cut with a knife approx a quarter of the way down, so you only cut the white, and there's no risk of getting any shell mixed into the egg.

maddiemookins16mum · 24/02/2024 16:14

I scoop out my boiled eggs into a little Peter Rabbit mug that I’ve had for 46 years, give it a fork, add salt and pepper and a wee knob of butter.

My Papa had this for his tea every night (hot main meal at lunchtime’.

It’s the only way I’ll eat boiled eggs.

AngelinaFibres · 24/02/2024 16:17

When I eat a boiled egg I cut the top off when its in the egg cup. That bit is only white inside the shell so I don't eat it. White egg with no yolk is just wrong. I eat the rest of the egg as long as there is yolk to go with the white. If all the yolk has been eaten I leave the rest of the white. My middle brother will only eat fried eggs as long as there is yolk to go with the white. Once yolk runs out then he stops eating. My youngest brother will only eat any type of egg if the yolk is solid. Anything wobbly and he won't eat it.
It's a personal thing. Your husband is different. That's okay.

AngelinaFibres · 24/02/2024 16:21

Also....you don't have to clean the egg cup that he has put in the dishwasher . He can eat his egg with the baked on yolk on the cup next time. He's a man. My bet is he wouldn't even notice. You can use a pristine egg cup for your egg.

StaunchMomma · 24/02/2024 16:35

Yeah, I was with him til I saw the pic 😂

CactusMactus · 24/02/2024 16:41

I see the egg shell as its wrapper. Like banana peel or a crisp packet. I would put neither of these things on something that I wanted to eat... Like buttered toast.

fridgegrazer · 24/02/2024 16:44

Get an egg poaching pan for your induction hob if that's what he's missing (or get him to get one.) I have one - works fine. I also do boiled eggs which I eat in the normal way - in an egg cup with soldiers and not lolling around on toast.

I’m sorry @HibiscusDubonnet but I’m 100% with@NoSnowdrop here! A knife, expertly wielded, is the best way. (Also the white shouldn’t be runny, surely? Just the yolk…)
This has reminded me though that my parents ‘opened’ their eggs differently. My mum used a knife — as do I, and @NoSnowdrop — but my dad whacked his eggs with a teaspoon to break the shell, so he’d then have to spend ages picking little bits of shell off. Madness, I tell you!

ancienticecream · 24/02/2024 17:00

I cannot comprehend why he'd eat it this way!

KvotheTheBloodless · 24/02/2024 17:04

HibiscusDubonnet · 24/02/2024 15:35

He has a first class honours degree from Cambridge University. True.

He's a Mathmo or a CompSci then, I'm sure!

NoSnowdrop · 24/02/2024 17:05

@Baircasolly no not the whole shell is peeled, actually I forgot a step - he smashes the top with the teaspoon and peels the bit outside the egg cup.

I feel a swift swipe with a knife is less messy and time-consuming!

NoOrdinaryMorning · 24/02/2024 17:05

I opened this thread after reading the title and immediately looked at the picture of the boiled egg still in its shell on a piece of toast ffs! 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Hang on, hang on - runny WHITE? That's obscene! No wonder he's so bizarre, if that's the standard of barely-cooked egg he has to deal with. Envy
