My husband thinks breastfeeding women should be more classy

He thinks if you are feeding, do not do it in the centre of a food court , try to go to the edges. Choose your seat around the fringe. Preferably near a potted plant. Choose to be discreet. Do not make a spectacle of yourself ( in Parliament),
In a restaurant, don't sit in the middle.
Women should show more discretion and decorum.

You think that two women waited until you'd ordered and paid for your food, and took off their tops in the middle of a cafe in a calculated scheme designed to get you to move seats?

I'm going to let you into a secret, it's not all about you. Also, if this did happen, and I'm very much thinking they did not take off their jumpers, tshirts and bras and leave them in a folded pile on the cafe table, you had a choice. I'm curious as to why if it offended you so much, and you didn't want to see it, you didn't move to a seat where you couldn't see their breasts.

You know that old saying about protesting too much?

No, they sat down after we had ordered. Jumpers came up, nursing bras flipped down, both breasts on view, even the one not used for feeding. They were across the table from us so in order not to look we had to look at the ceiling, the table top or extreme right or left. As I said, there were no other seats. No we were not going to leave without having the food we had ordered, paid for. There was a woman on the next table feeding her baby but looked like she was just cuddling. She was not sitting there with both breasts out.

I don't give a shiny one whether you believe it or not. It happened.

advise your husband he needs to keep that opinion close to his chest...

I don't want to see the immediate discarding of blokes' shirts, their moobs on display and - gods forbid if they get too close - the stench of stale sweat every time the sun peeks out from behind a cloud.

But it's never occurred to me to suggest they stop doing it to spare my delicate sensibilities.

DinnaeFashYersel · 23/02/2024 14:08

@ftp

Some do! It looks like they are making an aggressive point about their right to do so. I have seen women choose the central point sit down and remove their clothing, looking around to see who is looking, glare and shout about what they are doing

I just don't believe you.

DinnaeFashYersel · 23/02/2024 14:11

the attention seekers who whip out both breasts/take their top off etc. to feed and do so in order to get attention (this is the tiniest of minorities) but it makes me feel uncomfortable

Where are all these mythical baked women hanging out?

I have never seen this happen anywhere in the UK

I'm calling it as 💩 this does not happen.

Naked. Not baked. 🤣

Nope. That's the men with their moobs on display every time it's sunny.

pokebowls · 23/02/2024 14:24

@DoraSpenlow

I have. See my post upthread. The two women sitting opposite us in the cafe were in effect topless. We got the impression they wanted us to move but there were no other seats free and we had ordered and paid for our food so weren't going anywhere.
So you are trying to get us to believe that two women who are already seated wanted you to move (why? They were already seated. What possible reason. Would they have wanted you to move?) so badly that they stripped half naked. Did they have some sort of pact? Did they discuss it and come to some agreement to strip off so that you would move even though they didn't need your seats?
This is so nonsensical that I'm going to say it didn't happen.

It's not her breastfeeding that's the issue here, it's her odd behaviour! Why is this odd woman singlehandedly responsible for causing bad attitudes towards other women breastfeeding? Why the need to mention this clearly singular one off, who presumably has some kind of issue that is causing this behaviour?

Judging by a couple of other posts, it's not a one-off. These types are in the minority, fortunately, but they do exist. I am neither a troll nor a liar, my post at 12.05 today is my experience which happened on several different days. As I said, we now check to see if she's there before going in to the cafe. And judging by overheard comments, we're not the only ones avoiding her.

When I encountered it, it was in Lerwick, Shetland. It was a cafe in a large sports complex and we were attending an exhibition which was being held in the large sports hall.

Mothers should be able to feed their babies there but there was no need to sit there with both breasts out.

I don't want to see it either and if two topless men plonked themselves opposite me at a small table in a cafe I would have say something.

You don't spend much time at the beach then?

Yes I spend time at beaches but it is one thing to see it on a beach to having a shirtless body opposite you in a cafe. I wouldn't want my DH sitting shirtless with me in a cafe and I wouldn't wear a bikini to go to Tescos. Time and place and all that.

Ineke · 23/02/2024 16:25

So, In England and Wales, it is not an offence to be naked in public, a naturist has the right to freedom of expression. It only becomes an offence if it can be proved that the person has stripped off with the intention to upset and shock. You don’t have to be a naturist to do this either. I can remember not long ago a couple on a walking holiday, naked of course, had told the pub that they wished to visit that they would be arriving naked. The publican welcomed them and they were accepted by the others in the pub and left to get on with their quiet drink. Perhaps OP husband should be relieved that it’s only a few boobies that are out and about and not some dangling dongs too!

Will make sure next time I breastfeed in public to especially whap the boob out, in the middle of everywhere just to annoy silly billies like your husband.

Ineke · 23/02/2024 16:27

Anyone who has been to Wilderness music Festival will have experienced many a naked runner on to the traditional cricket match ground. Your husband should get out more often.

So you would go to Tesco in a bikini?

NoWayNarc · 23/02/2024 18:39

stephfennell · 23/02/2024 00:13

I think covering up is definitely required. Your husband should put a paper bag on his head anytime he's in public, just in case he happens to spot a sneaky boob.

Yes this hahaha

puzzledout · 23/02/2024 18:40

@DoraSpenlow are you 13 years old....

So you would go to Tesco in a bikini is the type of thing a teenager would say in an argument!

Good grief!

Grow up!

I am keen on modesty and respect in public places and for others around you so i am with your husband here.

How does breastfeeding a hungry baby disrespect others around? Are they unable to divert their eyes? Are they jealous they are not getting any?

I’m really confused about how this is disrespectful?

Blueink · 24/02/2024 12:56

Shocking verdict 18% agree with your DH no wonder some feel uncomfortable hiding their baby under swathes of cloth (as baby fights to pull the cloth off and some won’t even feed while covered) never mind as the potted plant hopefully provides some cover for the ‘shame’.

For the unicorn both boobs out feeders, these 18% would make me want to join them in the middle of the food court. FFS.

Why did you marry an idiot?
