I read something recently that suggested walking up stairs on tiptoes to build up calf muscles....

Is this not the ONLY way to walk up stairs? I've always walked up stairs on tiptoes and can't imagine an other way...

Am I weird?

(And yes, I've always had good calf muscles)

I've always climbed the stairs on all fours at home, from a skinny speedy little kid to a lumbering middle aged woman with a dodgy back. I don't do it every single time. Sometimes I'm carrying stuff.

justasking111 · 19/02/2024 23:54

Old house one foot in front of the other. When we moved horrible steep stairs in a dormer so I crawl up and come down very carefully. I thought it was old age. What a relief to read that it's a common problem 😂

justasking111 · 19/02/2024 23:57

If you have a dodgy knee, hip my physiotherapist said good foot up first going up. Bad foot first going down. It was a game changer for me.

EmmaEmerald · 20/02/2024 00:10

The clips shown are quite athletic

When I had a bad back injury, I would have found it impossible to do stairs like that. I can see how it would help bad knees but not back?

I'm thinking most posters are doing it for fun rather than due to injury? It reminds me of a monkey crawl drill I did in a gym class years ago.

DiscoBeat · 20/02/2024 00:20

I've always run up and down the stairs quickly. But not on tiptoes!

HollyKnight · 20/02/2024 00:36

I have two handrails so I take the stairs two at a time by pulling myself up by the rails like a really cool rock-climber.

blueshoes · 20/02/2024 00:45

I had to test it out to see how I go up the stairs.

The stairs at home are pretty narrow. I realise I also go up on tip toe as in only the toes touch the stairs. My heel does not completely go flat nor touch the step (it hangs over it it did) so technically I am going up on tip toe.

I also enjoy going up on all fours at home on carpeted stairs. It is faster and more fun and allows me to burst into dcs' rooms catching them on their phones not doing homework.

BrutusMcDogface · 19/02/2024 20:58

I go on all fours.

(genuinely, unless I’m carrying something! 😂)

Me too. By the end of the day my back is fucked.

MamaMode · 20/02/2024 01:40

When I'm not falling or tripping 'up' the stairs (which is most of the time), I'm like most...going up on tiptoes.

SouthEastCoast · 20/02/2024 01:43

Read that walking flat footed builds your glutes so I do that. My calves are very good already though lol

Bearsinmotion · 20/02/2024 05:48

Main wide stairs on tip toes (although I had to check!). Narrow steep stairs to DD’s attic bedroom on all fours 😁

BarbieDangerous · 20/02/2024 05:51

How are grown adults going up the stairs on all fours? I am so confused…. Do you just do it when no one’s in the house and you’re by yourself, or are your family aware you do this? So you just run up the stairs on all fours like a dog/cat? I can’t believe this lol

IChangedForThis · 20/02/2024 06:40

I've been laughing at the thought of grown adults climbing the stairs on all fours so thought I'd go and see how I do it.

Turns out I go sort of C shaped as I walk up the stairs. Not far off all fours to be fair.

I'm going to make it my mission today to watch people climbing stairs!

PrueRamsay · 20/02/2024 06:43

All fours at home.

Flat footed elsewhere.

TheDowagerDoughnut · 20/02/2024 06:51

I just walk up and down.

Unless the dog is going up at the same time, then I race him.

BeFrankforonce · 20/02/2024 07:12

All fours? Isn't this a sign of the Rapture?

TiredDonut · 20/02/2024 07:25

I've laughed so much at these responses, thank you everyone.

All fours you say....that sounds fun....I'm off to try it right now....

Downstairs, to the tune of “New York, New York” with accompanying kicks.

Upstairs by lift (apartment).

swapcicles · 19/02/2024 21:40

I'm fit and healthy (ish) but just walk normally up and down, I've fell top to bottom at least 5 times in the past as an adult and preferably don't want to do it again!
Is no-one wary of falling?

Yip ✋. Broke my ankle recently coming down them

RubaiyatOfAnyone · 20/02/2024 07:35

I’m pretty sure the all fours/not understanding all fours schism is due to the steepness of your staircase.

in my current house it would be bonkers - shallow steps, large staircase. In my grandparents house growing up - compulsory with a straight steep staircase.

InWalksBarberalla · 20/02/2024 07:38

I've genuinely never heard of anyone going up stairs on all fours. But where I live not many people have stairs in their home and it would be super weird out and about. I assume.
Currently I avoid stairs due to a dodgy knee but if I do need to use them its slowly and one at a time

Unexpecteddrivinginstructor · 20/02/2024 08:05

We have a steep, narrow staircase.

I go up one step at a time, feet flat. One dc goes up on all fours - very quick, hands for balance. Another dc bounces up and down the stairs, like Tigger, despite having once broken a bone due to landing awkwardly, other dc, dh and cats are only able to ascend the stairs if I am already descending them. They then try to squeeze past me, other than the cat who tries to trip me up.

CJ4713 · 20/02/2024 08:32

For those that crawl up the stairs on all fours, do you also do this at shops, friends houses, the train station, in public?
If not- why not? 😕

The dc who goes on all fours at home wouldn't outside due to hygiene. We tend to be a shoes off household so no mucky shoes on the stairs. Probably also based on this thread there would be a lot of judging going on.

I do that up and down the stairs at work. If nobody is looking.
