The carts of entitlement...

They are huge carts. On wheels. With a sort of pulley handle. That have started appearing. Left in front of every exhibit, in every zoo, museum, kids activity in general....dragged along by smug middle class dads usually, who are of course the first people on earth to ever have children...cos little Araminta and Finn might DIE if we don't lug ten tons of their crap around with us for one single day out somewhere. What the hell are these things in aid of? What have you even got in there? You look at the kids, they are like 9 years old, can they not carry a little backpack? Just awful.

These were really common in the USA 20 years ago, nothing new. Ideal for that in between age especially multiple young kids. I personally never had one but they were ubiquitous at camp bestival

But cars aren't parked right in front of the glass panel, are they, in the zoo, when we all want to see the lion/gorilla/whatever?

Yes, that’s the problem. I don’t see a problem with using them to cart the kids and all the “stuff” from the car park to the festival or attraction that’s 45 minutes walk away from the car park. The issue is when they drag it everywhere with them and it’s in everyone’s way. And everyone else is expected to give way to them.

@TurnTheKey

Kids use pushchairs on days out way older than 3. Especially when you use public transport/walk rather than cars!

Think I got mine from Tesco and paid about £30

Looks good to me, very sensible. To be honest, I haven't seen many about but they wouldn't bother me.

I fail to see what 'middle class' or 'entitlement' have to do with it. Those words are so often used on Mumsnet, usually by resentful people with chips on shoulders.

Indeed. I was wondering about DS and his wheelchair too.

Clearly some people probably think that's an inconvenience

Yes that's definitely what I meant, isn't it? Clearly he would have lion-viewing first dibs 🙂

Do they fold up? I have so many books to go to the charity shop, but I couldn’t store something that size

Some do.

I'm often very confused about the use of "entitled" since it became more commonplace.

I think here it means that they think they're "entitled" to take up space. Which of course they are, we're all entitled to space. Personally, I prefer to use the word "inconsiderate". While we're all entitled to take up and use space, if there's a shortage, we should share it considerately with others and, if we don't, we're inconsiderate. But for me that's different from entitled.

I can see the point of them if you are just going from the car to the beach and don't want to make more than one trip but they are not ideal being dragged down through the narrow cobbled streets such as St Ives. DH drives a delivery van through there and there is often no room to pass people with a wagon.

I've seen the delivery vans in st ives I feel for the drivers I really do!

Wetblanket78 · 20/02/2024 12:35

I've only ever seen one once at Chester zoo. You can hire them I do see a lot of Americans using them on social media. Some even put newborns in. Which I don't think is safe. I'm sure they think their kids will melt if they have to walk anywhere. As a non driver my kids were walking 2-3 miles a day on reins next from about 2. There ain't no way I was lugging them about in one of them things. I would be worried about keeping control of it crossing roads.

Lakeyloo · 20/02/2024 12:44

I have 2 but they are strictly used for dragging alcohol, sleeping bags, supplies etc the 500 miles from car park to campsite at music festivals. Excellent for off-roading and all good when everyone is doing the same in the same direction. I can't see why anyone would think they are a good idea for towing children and their belongings round museums !..... The same people who live in a town/city and need a bloody great Range Rover to take their one small child to school 2 streets away in possibly.

CharlotteBog · 20/02/2024 12:48

I think one might have been useful for a big family day out once the kids were no longer in pushchair (ie nowhere to hang all the bags) but still needed a change of clothing (depending on venue/location) and a picnic.

I'd use one now for when I go swimming in the lake, particularly when it's cold and you just want somewhere easy and accessible, but I can't justify it enough to buy one so will stick to my Aldi bags! If I had a cart AND a Dry Robe I'd maybe tick two squares on the wanker bingo game card?
nb I don't have a Dry Robe I have a dry robe dupe.

Blakessevenrideagain · 20/02/2024 13:14

I saw one tied to a mobility scooter being pulled along, presumably a cheaper option of trailer than one specifically for scooters.

DaBlackCatsAreDaBestCats · 20/02/2024 13:56

Never seen one

watermelonsugar56 · 20/02/2024 14:28

“The first people on earth to ever have children” made me laugh, perfect description and YANBU.

johnworf · 20/02/2024 14:57

I use one for all my gear as I'm a forest school leader but I've never seen anyone out and about with one.

Allfur · 20/02/2024 15:04

Given the height of a lion is approx 1.2m, I struggle to see why a trolley could block your view for too long, especially given the poor animal ain't going anywhere

Also this.

D20 · 20/02/2024 15:48

Ooof I have one but it is used mainly for harvesting apples from my orchard. I also used it to transport food and picnic blankets to the village green for the Queens jubilee.

We don’t live far from the beach so never go for a full day and can park up pretty close anyway. We take a tub trug for sandy/wet shoes and towels.

DuckOffAWatersBack · 20/02/2024 16:25

I feel like you're covertly working for the companies selling these op! You won't be able to move for wagons on your next day trip 🤣

DuckOffAWatersBack · 20/02/2024 16:35

Personally, I don't see a problem with them. It would get crazy if loads more people started using them (a possibility after this thread...), but they might be useful in certain circumstances.

Can't see how they're useful for non-car drivers (of which I am one), unless they live right next to the beach/attraction though? You couldn't take one on a bus/ tram/train, so how would you get to the destination?

Also, regarding buggies not being used for over 3's. We do loads of long walks, especially in summer, and the buggy is useful for the younger one and sometimes for the older one to rest in at the end of the day. We then carry the younger one as it's easier than carrying the older one! Though I appreciate this wouldn't be doable if you were out with them alone.

If you have a car, the older ones might sleep/rest in it after a long walk but the pram's good for non-car drivers. And yes, we do walk the odd mile or two without it but there are limits!

2ndMrsdeWinter · 20/02/2024 19:05

I know someone who uses one to ferry around her trio of ferals and vegan packed lunch. She thinks she’s a hipster. I think she’s a bell end.

Yes

(it will of course depend on specific types of trolley, and quality does vary)

The fabric style ones should have a bottom panel to strengthen the base when in use but comes out and folds up into a side pocket when packed away
The types of wheels can vary from basic to very off road.

This style used to perfectly fit boxes of paintballs, and was ideal for a team at a competitive tournament - but one paintball manufacturer redesigned their box dimensions to perfectly fit EU pallets, (making the box narrower and taller) and then most manufacturers have copied which means a they leave space in between boxes and less fit the trolley)

More substantial is a metal trolley, and the sides can be folded down or unclipped
These will carry a lot, but can be unsteady and easy to tip if you make a tight turn
(the wheel base is relatively narrower under the middle of the trolley)

If you want to get properly serious and stand out then a carp fishing trolley / barrow will carry anything - with some creativity
This is effectively a wheel barrow without the ‘bucket’ and is made of a frame that entirely dismantles for packing away.
We ran a mini event in a paintball festival for a few years, and one of our guys turned up with a carp trolley. It carried the majority of the equipment we needed to walk through the woods to our zone
