To wonder what posh Mums cook for dinner…

I have just seen Pippa Middleton’s bikini photos on the DM. Three different bikinis so far, washboard abs & nothing jiggles as she chases three kids. She could easily pass as a fibreglass mannequin. I’m wondering why it is that the Middleton women and affluent women (even middle class at my child’s school), always seem to be so impossibly slim. I struggle with my weight and I would love to see the groceries, fridge contents, packed lunchboxes and dinner plans of the other half. Obviously I know what healthy eating and cooking is but, the bodies of Mothers these days is next level. Why am I struggling to keep my tummy from flopping out while women in their 40’s pull off wearing linen mini shorts (not in UK) and high waisted jeans.

My life is far from joyless!

It's true that I find it hard to eat out but as a vegetarian who doesn't like UPF products, more often or not there is nothing on the menu that I actually want to eat.

Lazy chefs who just put on a fake meat burger for vegans and expect veggies to be happy with it are to blame. Not me. I mourn the lost days of decent vegetarian food in restaurants.

As for brown rice, brown basmati (my favourite) has a nutty flavour all of its own. I eat it on the grounds that it tastes nice. White rice has little taste and is often served as an overcooked soggy textureless pile of pap.

but some of them might say they are. The public usually gets to see the extremes of Eds in the media but there are subtle gradations on the spectrum.

My experience of EDs comes from the people I know who’ve had them not the media.

I don’t think it’s all middle class women, but those I know tat look like that are all into yoga.

another thing happening is this weekly injection that is about £170 per month & removes your appetite completely. Oprah & the Cardashians have all said the take it, but I’m hearing of more much more regular folk taking it here. A friend gets hers from Asda pharmacy online!

monkeyoven · 20/02/2024 17:59

Don’t measure yourself against a Middleton. These are ladies whose job is to look beautiful for their wealthy husband. They can throw resources at this that mere mortals can’t.

CLCB07 · 20/02/2024 18:07

She is toned and muscled. I'd say she eats lots of protein and does cardio and strength classes.

OneKindFox · 20/02/2024 18:16

Who cares? Bless them … if they are happy let them get on with it. I am happy eating BBQ’d Chinese ribs, Tapas, Steak and Chips and guzzling my red wine (on occasion). Life is good xxx

Your description of your diet is hardly what most people mean when they say "I've never been on a diet and I eat whatever I want" 😂😂

Edited

IloveAslan - its how people should eat. The weight issues in society are largely due to gut biome issues. Due to crap in processed and ultra processed food. Which in turn causes people to feel more hungry.

i didnt buy bread tonight because i couldn t find any that was crap free.

This is very recent however but thin MC mums have been around since the beginning of time

Probably not since the beginning of time, it hasn’t always been the desirable look.

in the past there have been other similar fads like in the 80s doctors were prescribing speed to aid weight loss.

in the past middle class mums were also much more likely to be SAHPs & I would expect that they felt part of their role was to maintain their looks. I don’t think that holds weight now though.

celticprincess · 20/02/2024 18:38

I think genetics play some part in this. In our family you can see the genetic weight gain coming through, even in the richer side of the family who have time to exercise and eat healthier non processed food.

I am one of the slimmer members of my family but with age the weight is creeping on. I was always a size 6-8 then 8-10 pre kids. Each decade seems to add a dress size. But also depends where you shop. In Primark I’m a 14 but in Dorothy Perkins was a 10!! Since having kids the weight has crept on but so have the bad snacking habits and tiredness preventing exercise.

pollymere · 20/02/2024 18:44

I used to "Size Zero". I achieved this by going for incredibly long walks, swimming and drinking water. I occasionally ate as well and I did eat once a day. I love bread so it would often be a small baguette with a filling or plain and a bag of salad. I occasionally ate a piece of cheesecake for a treat. I did eat tiny portions of meat or fish with potatoes and vegetables. I ate fruit. It was a very depressing part of my life foodwise.

Notbaconforbreakfast · 20/02/2024 18:46

I'm 60. 5ft 6 and weigh 8st 6lbs. Size 6. Being skinny is not all its cracked up to be. I've been skinny all my life. Relentlessly bullied at school. Hid my skinny frame under baggy clothes. I tried endless weight gain diets when I was younger but nothing worked. Used to eat gargantuan portions and lots of crap too. It affected my confidence massively.

Then came the fad for big bums and hips and mine was skinny. I always felt inferior to everyone else and I would have sold my soul for a juicy pair of breasts.

Its taken me all my life to come to terms with my build. BUT, I have now, and for the first time in my life I actually like how I look. I love to wear tight jeans now and show off my skinny arse. i should have been wearing them years ago. The gym has helped my mental health and I am on a high protein diet to build muscle. I still need to eat a lot to keep the weight up though, and need to eat something about every 3 hours.

Genetics I presume. It can't be just me.

Amista77 · 20/02/2024 18:49

my DSis's are like this. They think bread/pasta etc are the devil's work. They eat the same meals most of the time because they know exactly how many calories they contain. They don't eat badly and are all good cooks but live in a world where people judge each other all the time on their weight. It's so boring.
Plus PM would probably have done a drastic no eating thing before those photos (not that I've seen them).

Xmasdaft2023 · 20/02/2024 18:52

To quote “ I think what “eating a horse” means to a size 8 and to people battling with weight issues is a whole different thing. “

Just as an opinion from the other side (yep, size 8 here!!) just because I’m a size 8 I don’t know what being judged is like!! I do, probably more so than anyone who is over weight because you know, you can’t ever mention a fat persons weight but it’s free reign to tell me I’m too skinny 🙄 (true story and anyone that does say anything to me nowadays gets insulted back!)

believe me when I say this I’m the opposite and wish nothing more than to gain weight, I can’t ! I eat like a horse (all day every day and anyone I know would tell you so)

anyway, hashimotos mean's under active thyroid? I have over active thyroid however my weight was the same when I had no thyroid issues so I can’t blame that for being so skinny. But you can blame hashi for weight gain and not being able to get rid of it!

Generally I don’t think it’s down to posh cooking, I think we all play a part in what we fuel ourselves with, increase veg, increase movement and keep healthy! Wash board stomach or not that’s waaaayyyy more important imo!

Jumpers4goalposts · 20/02/2024 19:27

I went around a very very posh families house once for drinks and they were having food as well. It was a pizza buffet thing that had been laid out, she didn’t touch a slice but always seemed to be busy fussing over and around the food and then she was constantly smoking.

Mine comes from my lived experience of having an ED (both restrictive and the opposite) and of knowing many others in various treatment settings over the years. And when I talked about the media I was not referring to you as I know nothing about you. I was referring to the public in general. Now please leave me alone. I have my ideas and you have yours. Let’s leave it at that?

OldPerson · 20/02/2024 20:07

Just be grateful you don't live in a goldfish bowl. I think with the Middletons - naturally sporty and genes. However - how many minor plump TV celebrities have you seen, who have become national darlings and suddenly start becoming very body conscious, when they start becoming photographed a lot at social events? And how many minor TV celebrities turn to drink and drugs? Just be very, very grateful you don't have to maintain impossibly high standards of physical perfection. And also with Pippa, who looked ripped and physical perfection - How sexy did you think she looked? How much humour and wit? How much fun and cheekiness? Don't get me wrong. I think she's great. But no single woman, represents all that women can represent. If you don't have washboard abs - you're probably too busy being real, approachable and delightful.

Squishable · 20/02/2024 20:52

So I reward myself with food. I can’t buy nice stuff or have a spa day to make myself feel better…but I can go to the supermarket and buy calorific comfort food and wine! Coupled with that is the fear of being bikini ready! I only have to worry about this once or twice a summer. If I had lots of money and time off this would motivate me a lot!

I completely agree with all of this. It’s not carbs, oil, and healthy fats that cause overweightness - Italy, France and Luxembourg have the lowest rates of obesity in the world and all love bread and cheese! We should eat healthy, wholesome, nutritious food with very occasional high quality treats, and we will look great for it. Exercise/activity helps!

But also, I think the physiques of PM and KM look as though they have a very low body fat percentage. KM is all over the pro-ana websites as a role model! Women are supposed to have a bit more fat on them than men, so it may not be all that healthy to be noticeably thin with defined abs.

45% of Italians are overweight.

The lowest rates of obesity in the would are Vietnam, Thailand and Japan.

petshihtzu · 20/02/2024 21:08

Have you heard of ab contouring? You can literally get surgery to make your abs more prominent, look up Adriana Lima

petshihtzu · 20/02/2024 21:10

Sorry meant to say look her up when she was pregnant, she literally still had abs because she got them liposuctioned! It's not natural!

Thing was if you turn the click back to the 70s you had many mothers who were slim, they didn’t have the muscle- but they did over eat and had meat and two veg for dinner regularly.

What's wrong with meat and two veg for dinner regularly please? Sounds pretty normal to me.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 20/02/2024 21:35

@petshihtzu And your evidence for those assertions is?
