To wonder what posh Mums cook for dinner…

I have just seen Pippa Middleton’s bikini photos on the DM. Three different bikinis so far, washboard abs & nothing jiggles as she chases three kids. She could easily pass as a fibreglass mannequin. I’m wondering why it is that the Middleton women and affluent women (even middle class at my child’s school), always seem to be so impossibly slim. I struggle with my weight and I would love to see the groceries, fridge contents, packed lunchboxes and dinner plans of the other half. Obviously I know what healthy eating and cooking is but, the bodies of Mothers these days is next level. Why am I struggling to keep my tummy from flopping out while women in their 40’s pull off wearing linen mini shorts (not in UK) and high waisted jeans.

Getting photographed a lot, standing next to skinny socialites and celebrities would be enough to spur me on to binning the bourbons.

You're not the thread police.. I'll comment on what I want.

But I see you can't answer my question.

Imagine calling someone out of shape...that's rude enough....then imagine calling someone out of shape when you can't even see them?!

Issues

Did you read her previous post? No one who’s into working out would say that about another woman’s athletic body. Also why would I be bothered about being called rude? Your opinion about anything is irrelevant to me!

Newchapterbeckons · 19/02/2024 06:30

Being openly anorexic is acceptable in many circles.

that's ridiculous and a far cry from what anyone would ever want for their child to think.

Have you ever met someone with Anorexia? It's not just looking thin..... It's a whole lot worse than that

I think the comment is insensitive and just plain wrong.

Yes I did read it.

Are you insinuating that anyone who is not shaped like PM is out of shape?

Moonwatcher1234 · 19/02/2024 14:17

Nots456 · 19/02/2024 05:11

I'm 40 next year and my physique is similar to PM. It hasn't actually changed since I was 16: Size 6 and weight 7.5 stone, flat stomach, toned.

I've never been on a diet and I eat whatever I want. However I have a naturally small-ish appetite, I'm vegetarian and I dislike sugary 'treats', sugary drinks, chocolate bars or anything artificial or highly processed. I do eat good homemade cake now and then, a quality croissant or some plain dark chocolate. I don't drink alcohol, only occasionally. No smoking.

I don't have a car so I walk and cycle everywhere. I don't want to lose weight so I'm focussing on building strength and flexibility through yoga.

I have siblings who are overweight and the biggest difference between us is that they are happy to eat ultra processed foods and I am not. I think this is the secret really.
I eat whatever I want but none of it is ultra processed.

If there's a choice of a fruit or plain yoghurt I always choose plain as it's less likely to have sweeteners and flavourings in it. I won't eat anything that is an artificial colour. I won't eat cereals as most of them have crap in them. I cook plain organic porridge oats and put fruit on top. All my dinners are cooked from scratch. I'll rarely buy anything ready made (only if desperate and then will opt for something with minimal ingredients and processing). I eat quality organic butter but not margarine which is full of rubbish. I buy quality cheese but won't touch the rubbery supermarket stuff. Organic free range eggs. Lots of vegetables. Quality bread that is just wheat, salt and yeast. Etc etc

I suspect our definition of eating whatever you want would differ hugely! Your diet sounds very healthy but isn’t really the epitome of a real, I eat whatever i want and still manage to remain slim diet. Wish I had your self discipline though

Having no money does not necessarily play a role in weight gain. People may consume a full pack of chocolate biscuits, or bags of crisps or constantly nibble on dense UPFs, these can be expensive.
I think it does contribute to a certain extent,
UPFs are always cheap, but good sourdough or bakery seeded country bread costs more than Value white toast for example.

but on the other hand , for almost two decade we were conditioned to believe that
eating three whole fruits throughout the day is bad but taking a "smoothie" made with 1cup blueberries , 1 cup raspberries and half a cup pineapples and an apple all at once is good.

the need for Protein bars and proteins labeled everything when in reality , it’s easily <and cheaper> achievable to get good amount of protein from things like cheese , eggs etc.

I don’t think anyone slim eats ‘what they want’ if I’m honest. I mean I’d love to eat Domino’s stuffed crust every night and drink half a bottle of wine followed by chocolate, but I know I’d feel terrible for it, so my version of eating what I want includes all those things but moderately; I’ll have a takeaway but not every week; I’ll eat biscuits with my tea but only two and if I want cake, I’ll save calories to accommodate it. My husband’s birthday is coming up and we’ll go for brunch and to the pub and get fish & chips on the way home, but this is by no means a normal day and we’ll play tennis in between and go for a long walk.

Ultimately for me eating all the things I’m tempted by would lead to poor mental health as I’d feel guilty constantly. I really like healthy food and the added bonus is it is guilt free, and means I can enjoy treats occasionally without feeling bad about it.

I’m also not a lover of sweets and puddings really. My downfall would be beer, wine, pizza & cheese!

Not insulting or dickish - it’s a genuine question as to whether people have lost sight of what is attractive. Especially when having a physique like that is the result of quite deliberate effort. I’m all for eating right, exercising etc - but killing yourself to look arguably not great? Seems a very peculiar thing to aspire to

‘She looks like a boobless, bumless little weight lifting man.’

There is nothing about this sentence that isn’t insulting or dickish.

Different people find different body types attractive. Again, just because you don’t find this particular body type attractive doesn’t mean it’s ’bad.’ Also, just because she’s toned and slim doesn’t mean she’s killing herself.

As an ITU nurse, in my experience this is accurate. In general, the more overweight ones survive than the ultra skinny. One of our consultants is a bit of an extreme athlete (you're taking marathons and cross country cycles) and very skinny, and has commented that his mortality would be higher than a number of our overweight patients. Reassuring for us nurses who are straight to the coffee room for caffeine and biscuits 😂

If you are a nurse on your feet all day, there is no issue with a few coffees and a couple of biscuits to get you through your shift. I imagine you will be getting at least the recommended amount of steps in per day, if not alot more.

The problem is when an office worker drives their kids to school, drives to works, sits at a desk all day, eats a shop bought (high calorie) lunch and drives home. Modern life isn’t ideal for keeping active so its up to us to make sure we do keep as active as possible when we can (weekends, walking if possible whenever time allows, a walk in a lunch hour etc, an evening exercise class if you can fit it in).

Pippa’s figure is clearly a very athletic figure and no doubt she does have a home gym/personal trainer etc. But some of the comments on this thread are suggesting its impossible to be slim and eat normally - its really not with an active lifestyle and not eating complete rubbish.

PoliteTurtle · 19/02/2024 14:33

I have always been in the slimmer side, and I’m certainly not posh and I definitely don’t intentionally exercise. Each time I had my kids I’d snap back really easily (I realise this sounds like a humble brag but I actually wish I could put on weight as I lack massively in the boob region) … it could just be their genetics?

Comedycook · 19/02/2024 14:42

Of course being slim in not impossible...but there's a range of sizes that can be regarded as slim. To achieve PM levels of slim is clearly hard work. That's not achieved by just a healthy diet and occasional gym session. Like pps said, she's an athlete really.

Comedycook · 19/02/2024 14:42

Although what do I know...as according to a particular unpleasant poster I'm one of only two women on the planet who are out of shape.

Agree with all of that.

What matters is health, both mental and physical.

I don't think nurses running on coffee and biscuits is great, frankly, regardless of how many steps they take, because they're stressed, and while caffeine and simple carbs may get you through the day, they'll take a toll in the long run, and so will unaddressed stress.

Member968405 · 19/02/2024 14:53

I was that size until early forties. I changed nothing, but my metabolism changed drastically with peri menopause and now I’m a 14-16. She may be naturally slim- at the moment .

NewNeighbourhood · 19/02/2024 14:55

Really interesting points. Place marking to read rest later!

LetusandLoveit · 19/02/2024 13:35

What exactly do you think is wrong with her body shape? @godlikeAI

She has a rectangle figure. Straight up and down.
She's slim and fit.

People really have lost sight of what is attractive.
They seem to to think pumped up boobs, enhanced pumped up bums etc are the way to go.

She's a normal size with a muscly body. She isn't showing skin and bone collar bones, or ribs. She's slim with good muscly legs.

That is an astute observation.

When I was younger (I'm late 50s now), a big bum was not considered a good thing, and enhancing your boobs or even wearing a push up bra would have been an incomprehensible decision.

ItsAllAboutTheDosh · 19/02/2024 15:02

People have not lost sight of what is attractive, they simply do not agree.
Look at the 1950s when the hour glass figure was all the rage.

Comedycook · 19/02/2024 15:04

What about natural big boobs and bums...it's not always fake.

And beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

For most women, to achieve Pippa Middleton's extreme lack of body fat will require unhealthy disordered eating. Her body fat % is unlikely to be in the healthy range. We do require some body fat and this extreme lack of body fat is unusual without severe food restriction along with a lot of exercise.

Images of healthy levels of body fat on fit women with muscle and core strength compared to PM

Your pictures show women with wider hips (I'm referring to bone structure) and bigger boobs than PM. Neither of these features has anything to do with diet or exercise. Your hips and the size of your boobs are the result of your genetic heritage.

inneedofaglowup · 19/02/2024 15:06

Can we pause the debating on what is all the rage and people preferences and someone just tell me what I gotta do to become a slim active mum. I'm 20kg over a healthy bmi. So far I've gathered steamed fish and chicken with veg will do me a lot of goodness. 90mins of exercise and lots of walking.

TheFutureMrsWolowitz · 19/02/2024 15:11

Her figure looks VERY like DH's first wife who was a pentathlete who competed at a high level. Very fit and toned- not starved at all IMO.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 19/02/2024 15:14

Fuck me, this thread's depressing.

A woman who is fit and toned and clearly healthy must be:

  • anorexic/starving herself;
  • a chronic under-eater;
  • miserable;
  • denying herself any nice food; and/or
  • an unattractive body shape

The bitterness of some of the posts above just drips off the screen!

Maybe - just maybe - eating mostly natural food (i.e. not ultra processed stuff), and moderate amounts of it, limiting treats to occasional consumption (so then they are actual treats, yes?) plus prioritising a good level of fitness and strength is a good thing and not something to be derided or sneered at as "living a joyless existence"? Because it actually feels better to eat well and be fit, in my experience.

tennesseewhiskey1 · 19/02/2024 15:16

I’m not posh and I have different bikinis for different days when on holiday 😂
