I have just seen Pippa Middleton’s bikini photos on the DM. Three different bikinis so far, washboard abs & nothing jiggles as she chases three kids. She could easily pass as a fibreglass mannequin. I’m wondering why it is that the Middleton women and affluent women (even middle class at my child’s school), always seem to be so impossibly slim. I struggle with my weight and I would love to see the groceries, fridge contents, packed lunchboxes and dinner plans of the other half. Obviously I know what healthy eating and cooking is but, the bodies of Mothers these days is next level. Why am I struggling to keep my tummy from flopping out while women in their 40’s pull off wearing linen mini shorts (not in UK) and high waisted jeans.

It is currently reported that 7 out of 10 people are overweight or obese. This is a significant increase from the 1 in 10 people who were overweight or obese in the 60s and 70s. Having no money does not necessarily play a role in weight gain. People may consume a full pack of chocolate biscuits, or bags of crisps or constantly nibble on dense UPFs, these can be expensive.

Interestingly, when compared to the supermarket snack equivalents, homemade treats like Grandma's flapjacks and buns did not have the same effect on weight gain. It is worth noting that 40-50 years ago, being slim was considered the societal norm.

For most women, to achieve Pippa Middleton's extreme lack of body fat will require unhealthy disordered eating. Her body fat % is unlikely to be in the healthy range. We do require some body fat and this extreme lack of body fat is unusual without severe food restriction along with a lot of exercise.

Images of healthy levels of body fat on fit women with muscle and core strength compared to PM

Pippa Middleton is a runner and has completed ultra marathons. Comparing her body shape to Hollywood actresses is daft- you’d be better off comparing her to female athletes. Jessica Ennis Hill and Paula Radcliffe don’t look much like Halle Berry either.

Ah don’t be a dick, just because you don’t personally find her body shape attractive doesn’t mean you have to insult her, that’s really childish.

Not insulting or dickish - it’s a genuine question as to whether people have lost sight of what is attractive. Especially when having a physique like that is the result of quite deliberate effort. I’m all for eating right, exercising etc - but killing yourself to look arguably not great? Seems a very peculiar thing to aspire to

AmethystSparkles · 19/02/2024 13:32

I’m a size 8 and aged 51. I have chronic fatigue/migraines/digestive issues but I always walk the dogs and when I’m well I do Ashtanga yoga. I’m in bed a lot of the time though.

I really don’t think women like PM eat as little as you think….no one can survive on fish and veg. I’ve just had cod steamed for two mins in the microwave and microwave brown rice (about 3/4 of the packet) with chilli sauce. I’ve also had half a big tub of coconut yoghurt, a Trek protein bar and 40g of 70 percent chocolate.

What exactly do you think is wrong with her body shape? @godlikeAI

She has a rectangle figure. Straight up and down.
She's slim and fit.

People really have lost sight of what is attractive.
They seem to to think pumped up boobs, enhanced pumped up bums etc are the way to go.

She's a normal size with a muscly body. She isn't showing skin and bone collar bones, or ribs. She's slim with good muscly legs.

spriots · 19/02/2024 13:35

There's some pretty offensive generalisations being made about overweight people in this thread too. I am overweight - I have never eaten a whole packet of biscuits. I don't eat biscuits at all actually or cake or UPFs in general.

godlikeAI · 19/02/2024 13:37

ItsAllAboutTheDosh · 19/02/2024 13:34

@godlikeAI I agree.

Thank you! I’m not saying she can’t look however she wants, of course she should, as should anyone. I just can’t believe hundreds of people would sit around wondering how to look the same - that’s the strange part

I couldn't say what her body fat is but she is not excessively skinny. I agree with @ImNotAsThinkAsYouDrunkIAm - rather compare her to athletes, not actresses.

When DS was overweight in primary school and being teased and we had to work hard to get him on track - through a combination of better food choices and activity - he was stressed for a long time that he was still overweight (and at school he was still being bulled/teased). At one point, I took photos of his body for him, then found some genuinely overweight children of his age online and then I removed the heads and showed him all the pics. I was horrified that he was convinced that HE was the person who was the most overweight.

I think the same is happening in reverse with the Middleton sisters. They're constantly accused of being too thin, borderline bulimic/anorexic etc. But I think if their bodies were just shown without their faces next to a whole lot of other celebrities they'd just be normal within that framework (less so compared to us mere mortals! Grin )

PM clearly does loads of exercise- her shoulder muscles shows that. She looks very strong.

But genetics are a factor. All my family (including the men) are under 5 ft 6 and apple shaped. My mother helpfully calls us hobbits. My father equally helpfully calls us a family of 'fat bastards'. We all seem to have eating disorders as well as there is an awful lot of fat shaming going on in my family. I'm 5 ft 1 and even when I was 8 stone I looked squat. DH is long and lean and the Dcs are long and lean and DH has never dieted in his life - nor has either of his sisters who are equally long and lean (if what they tell me is the case).

I'd love to have a different body shape though- that's for certain.

Agree - genetics play a huge part. Especially if you have a naturally muscular physique. I was always small but muscular as a kid. These days, if i do any exercsie for just a few weeks, I tone up really fast. Because I naturally have muscle tone and muscle memory. My sons have different body shapes - my youngest is more like me and you can see his muscles. My eldest is more like his Dad, and even though they do the same activities, he has no muscle tone!

Pippa has good muscle tone, quite athletic. She obviously works hard for it, but I bet it's way easier for her to look like that than other people on the same diet and exercise plans.

@pokebowls I am thinking that PM knows one heck of a lot more than you do about nutrition and health. She's recently completed a Masters in Physical Education.

To accuse her of having an eating disorder is just making yourself appear stupid.

The only time my BMI was in the healthy range and top end ...was when I was at university in my late teens. Honestly I really didn't eat much..one meal a day. I was always hungry. It was a struggle.

Cheesehound · 19/02/2024 13:42

I feel for women in the public eye. It must be exhausting being hyper focused on your appearance - or maybe PM isn’t and is just blessed with good fortune in the figure department (and a personal chef, home gym, PT, and loads of spare time to exercise).

@Nots456 I eat very much like you but sadly my downfall is always treats!

God this is depressing. She looks fit and strong to me. Perhaps she exercises and eats well because she wants to live a long and healthy life?

iwafs · 19/02/2024 13:43

I’d love to look like pippa or kate
sadly I love my food more!

I expect the majority of their diet is veg

Applesonthelawn · 19/02/2024 13:45

I've just googled her and think she looks about as slim and defined as me although I have a different shape. I have a BMI of 22 and I keep it deliberately there because I am over 60 - lower is not really recommended if you are my age. I doubt hers is any lower than mine, so she is really not dangerously skinny, she is fine and healthy and is probably just disciplined.

shearwater2 · 19/02/2024 13:51

PM looks amazing in the most recent bikini photos, like a really fit athlete.

Catsfrontbum · 19/02/2024 13:51

Pippa has a very athletic body which looks like she takes her food and exercise very seriously. Her neck and shoulders are well defined- clearly she lifts.

I exercise 3/4 times a week. Weightlifting and circuits mainly. I eat well, watch what I eat, not too much UPF.

I look nothing like PM, I am size 8/10 and weight about 57kg, but looking like that is a very specific high protein diet counting all the macros. Who has the time?!

Charlize43 · 19/02/2024 13:52

Pippa will have only eaten an almond and three cress in the last two weeks, while you, my lovely, will have indulged in a whole feast of culinary treats...

Now, who's the lucky one?

Also you don't have to deal with people clamouring to get behind you to see your arse and then passing judgement on it...

You are blessed!

This. She's an athlete, and clearly eats to support her training.
It isn't possible to look like this and run ultramarathons if you're starving yourself 🙄

I know a number of women who look like this, all eat a huge amount of the right food and train regularly.

So rude and unnecessary.

How does the pp you quoted "sound" out of shape?

NeedToChangeName · 19/02/2024 14:06

wibdib · 19/02/2024 11:43

I used to be super skinny with no effort. Then I met DH and we went from spending a little time together to a lot, and I ended up doing most of the cooking as he wasn’t very good at it (he would do all the washing up which was great for me as I’d much prefer to cook than to do the washing up - there was no dishwasher!).
However my dad died unexpectedly after a few years and I realised I had nothing smart that fitted to go to his funeral - and my weight has crept up and up and up ever since :(
I also realised that I used to make whatever I fancied to eat - wasn’t ever big into potatoes but would occasionally buy a bag of baby anew Jersey Royals as a treat. And I’d often do a big stir fry out chicken with a nice creamy sauce. And some veg. But turns out that although dh (as he now is) says he eats everything, which he does, he also loves potatoes (especially roast or chips) and more traditional meals of meat and veg and potatoes. And me being young and in love tried to make things he liked as I was a good cook, even thought they weren’t the sort of things I’d usually make for me, and he wasn’t keen on my random ‘see what I fancy from the supermarket’ approach to cooking, instead wanting to be organised with a ‘proper’ meal, so over the years I stopped making ‘my’ meals and made many more of ‘his’ type of meals- and my weight had ballooned as a consequence.
And then the dc came along and it turned out they weren’t so into eating the ‘odd’ stuff I liked and dh didn’t, so I’ve just made more and more of the ‘normal’ —bland— stuff…

@wibdib similar in my family

I still cook my choice of food, but in smaller containers and freeze it

I usually eat with DP and DS, but sometimes, they have their food and I have mine

Imagine calling someone out of shape...that's rude enough....then imagine calling someone out of shape when you can't even see them?!
