I have just seen Pippa Middleton’s bikini photos on the DM. Three different bikinis so far, washboard abs & nothing jiggles as she chases three kids. She could easily pass as a fibreglass mannequin. I’m wondering why it is that the Middleton women and affluent women (even middle class at my child’s school), always seem to be so impossibly slim. I struggle with my weight and I would love to see the groceries, fridge contents, packed lunchboxes and dinner plans of the other half. Obviously I know what healthy eating and cooking is but, the bodies of Mothers these days is next level. Why am I struggling to keep my tummy from flopping out while women in their 40’s pull off wearing linen mini shorts (not in UK) and high waisted jeans.

Women like PM have borderline eating disorders and body dysmorphia. I have a very glamorous friend in her 70s who was a well known celebrity in the 60s and 70s. Even today she will skip breakfast and dinner and only have a very light lunch. She looks good on the surface (big hair, elegant makeup and clothes) but to me she looks ill and frail. If you ask her though, she'll pull at some imaginary skin and say how fat she is! I can't live that life- I love food and want to enjoy it.

I was like that years ago, absolute minimum amount of food, all cooked from scratch, very little fat and sugar and lots of exercise.

I now eat healthy most of the time but have treats, bit of alcohol, exercise a little bit, and I'm now at what would be considered a healthy normal weight.

I have my hips and boobs back, honestly feel so much better about myself then I did back then. And I get to enjoy all the foods I like.

@ChilliPB Do you cycle with you child/children? Are they independently cycling with you or connected to your bike?

@orchardgirl4 Attached to the bike at the moment on a seat, we’re lucky that we have a cycle path to the beach and to some other nice spots, so when DD is older we can hopefully all continue to cycle as she can safely cycle independently.

My best friend is like this. She is very very slim and has an eating disorder that she disguises as 'healthy clean eating' (she has eliminated virtually all food from her diet apart from fish and steamed vegetables and occasionally a spoon of rice). She also has osteoporosis.

If you are eating less than 1000 calories a day and over exercise, then life does have elements of joylessness because physiologically it creates conditions in your central and peripheral nervous system that lead to mood changes. Your neurotransmitters and neural pathways change to accomodate starvation mode and your body is focussed on the basics in Maslow's hierarchy of needs, energy and sustenance.

I had anorexia and at my lowest weight I was 6 stone and was an inpatient with many others who had ED. It was not a happy place. I'd say from under 8 stone downwards you can notice mood changes in people, listlessness and a lack of motivation for life. I became iron deficient anemic, my potassium and magnesium levels got completely out of whack, I have permanently damaged my heart, kidneys and teeth and all my veins collapsed as I was dehydrated. Food restriction is no joke and I often feel people on MN are really neglectful and not thinking of others when they post their restricted diets and do the wide eyed 'This is normal, people have lost sight of healthy eating - words have impact and whilst you might be proud of yourself and it may be normal for you, it can be dangerous for others. IMO there's just no need for it.

These woman marry into wealth because they are slim and glamorous (sized up like racehorses - comparing with how their mothers look), more likely to be photographed if slim and glamorous.
In the old days may have been on amphetamines as appetite suppressants and now have personal trainers.
Both PM and POW are very tall and were at schools with playing fields and gyms so grew up with sports opportunities unlike local comps where the pe lesson starts and ends with a bus ride (my DCs were at this type of school)

I thought that, and I noted the “I won’t eat” “I’ll choose” not “I don’t like”, so it sounds very much like a skinny posh diet.

Because we all have different diets. My son is bulking at the gym and eats lots of protein, I am pescatarian but prefer to eat vegan/vegetarian, and my daughter is fussy! Neither of them will eat lentils, beans or chickpeas as just don't like them (I love them). We don't eat a lot of processed food but the default that we all agree on tends to be pasta (with added protein for my son)!

We can't assume this, whatever she or anyone else says about what she eats. I used to be like her. I was 7st 12 (5 ft 3ins) despite eating heartily. I could eat anything I liked and never varied from that weight. I got some cruel taunts about being skinny and everyone assumed I didn't eat. I don't agree I was skinny. IMHO I was OK, but people are bitchy. Well, totally different now. Things started to change at age 34, after birth of DS2. Started to gain weight, slowly at first. That was a long time ago. Now, I exercise more and eat less, and still I'm a lot heavier than before. If I watch what I eat I can keep it down to just over 9st.

I was flicking through a magazine a while ago in a waiting room....there was a celeb interview...minor celeb, can't even remember who but anyway the interview was about their diet. They said how years ago their diet was really strict and now they had a much more relaxed approach to food and had loosened up...it then went on to say what they eat now....lunch was something like steamed courgettes and dinner was a green salad. I dread to think what their strict diet must have consisted of if that was their more relaxed approach to eating!

I don’t see a single person on this thread talking about eating less than 1000 calories a day.

It’s the perception that in order to be a healthy weight and have a toned body that you must be restricting yourself that is dangerous. Being as overweight as many of the women I know is not healthy at all and will lead to numerous problems as they age.

@Brawcolli Food tastes good! I get joy from eating because I like to taste new things and also eat my favourite foods. Hate cooking though, lol.
But it's just food 🤷‍♀️ ok, it tastes good, that's why you eat it and clearly no one wants to eat disgusting food. But joy? That's like the bollocks that DH comes out with about having a rush from running or how good a long bike ride makes you feel. No, you feel knackered and everything aches for days!

While Pippa and Kate might be extreme- I regularly say nothing when talk about weight because no one wants to hear that the reason they are overweight is that they eat too much, too much of what they eat is crap and they aren’t active enough. Sadly it’s true in about 95% of cases. Sometimes there are good reasons- life set up means you are in cars not walking etc but it does still boil doing to how much you eat, what you eat and how much you move.

Anytime I spent more than 24 hours with someone, it’s pretty clear why they are the shape they are.

But no on me wants to hear it so I just smile and nod.

I would not envy her figure. Looking at the photos she is straight up and down and boyish, not a curve in sight, not shapely at all.

Although I will say that she looks toned and no cellulite, flabby bits

For me Pippa Middleton looks great but her figure is not my goals, I am quite fit and healthy but curvy (not overweight) and I prefer that look, especially in a bikini! I am a bit surprised so many people want to look so straight up and down with no shape?

I remember Dr Hilary Jones doing a piece on TV about new/relatively new mums trying to be slim as quick as because they'd seen a certain celebrity get back in shape within weeks.

His take was don't bother 9 times out of 10 these people won't be looking after their DC 24/7 like most mum's as they'll be in the gym with a personal trainer and getting meals sent in by chef's.

I do however know a handful of people that are back in their jeans within a few weeks but it's probably more to do with genetics that healthy eating/gyming it.

I'm 40 next year and my physique is similar to PM. It hasn't actually changed since I was 16: Size 6 and weight 7.5 stone, flat stomach, toned.

I've never been on a diet and I eat whatever I want. However I have a naturally small-ish appetite, I'm vegetarian and I dislike sugary 'treats', sugary drinks, chocolate bars or anything artificial or highly processed. I do eat good homemade cake now and then, a quality croissant or some plain dark chocolate. I don't drink alcohol, only occasionally. No smoking.

I don't have a car so I walk and cycle everywhere. I don't want to lose weight so I'm focussing on building strength and flexibility through yoga.

I have siblings who are overweight and the biggest difference between us is that they are happy to eat ultra processed foods and I am not. I think this is the secret really.
I eat whatever I want but none of it is ultra processed.

If there's a choice of a fruit or plain yoghurt I always choose plain as it's less likely to have sweeteners and flavourings in it. I won't eat anything that is an artificial colour. I won't eat cereals as most of them have crap in them. I cook plain organic porridge oats and put fruit on top. All my dinners are cooked from scratch. I'll rarely buy anything ready made (only if desperate and then will opt for something with minimal ingredients and processing). I eat quality organic butter but not margarine which is full of rubbish. I buy quality cheese but won't touch the rubbery supermarket stuff. Organic free range eggs. Lots of vegetables. Quality bread that is just wheat, salt and yeast. Etc etc
