To be shocked by spring

Lighthearted

Does anyone else seem to get consumed into the season they're in?
I love autumn and early winter. Bonfire night is my fave, then Christmas is good. I'm always ready for cooler weather when it comes.

But by this time of year, it feels like its gone on forever. I'm not depressed by it (my husband is) but it's like I've fully adapted to winter life - and then suddenly completely bemused by warmth again.

The sun's come out here this afternoon and there's some warmth in it. We have a coat we put on if going out for a smoke- I've put it on on autopilot but actually too hot with it out here. And made myself a hot water bottle for bed last night, like every single night since November but it was actually way too hot for it.

I feel like after over 30 years on this earth I should be able to keep a weather eye on things and slowly ease into spring but it takes me by surprise. I am quite a creature of habit and maybe a bit oblivious to my surroundings. I was so overdone on heat last summer, and now it's like I'm incredulous, emerging blinking into the light like after some long armageddon-style winter.

It's only been 4 months!!

Yes! I know exactly what you mean, it's a (very welcome) surprise to me every year!

Me, too! I'm bitterly disappointed every autumn, too, when the leaves fall off and the daytime shrinks. You'd think I'd be used to it by now 😂

A premature bee was buzzing round my head at lunchtime - I wanted to tell it to get back in its nest, it's not time yet! 🐝

I love Spring and it is fantastic to see the sun and to feel some warmth back in it.
Insects are waking up, the flowers and trees are starting to bloom and, yes, the grass is starting to grow.

However, lovely as it is, it worries me. The temperatures we have had recently worry me as they are not 'normal' for this time of year. I can count on one hand the amount of frosts we have had this winter and not a single fall of snow - not even a sprinkling. Rain, rain and more rain though. (we are in Oxfordshire)

In 2018, the 'Beast from the East' arrived in the UK around the 24th Feb for over a week, so winter is definitely not over and I feel so sorry for the insects that are drawn out by the sun and mild temps only to be killed by freezing weather.

Heat? Last summer?! I wish...
There were a couple of hot weeks in June and a couple in September but all the rest was one of the wettest and darkest (less sunshine than usual) summers on record. Exclude June temps and it was cooler than average too.

The rain, the constant rain.... I don't even care about the temperatures or seasons, just sick of it pissing down constantly. I'll take an early spring if it brightens things up finally!

It’s only February! There’s still time for plenty of Proper Winter. We’ve had a few days of 16 deg here, but I won’t be a bit surprised if it’s a good 10 Deg cooler again soon.

I heard a chiffchaff singing today (and eventually saw him in the bushes). First one of the year.

And yes two bumblebees buzzing about today as well

HerRoyalNotness · 19/02/2024 00:44

We’ve got mosquitos already. Far too early 😩

Palindrone · 19/02/2024 00:45

I was surprised to find a wasp in my bathroom this morning.

There won’t be plenty of proper winter, the long term forecasts are all fairly average. It will likely just be unsettled in parts. And yes we may have a couple of days here and there of cold weather, it’s always changeable at this time of year, but winter is on the way out, the ground is warming up, the mornings and nights are getting lighter, and spring is definitely making her entrance, as winter, bows out for another year.

Exactly, this happens a lot. My friend is a weather buff and says more cold coming and is worried about all these early spring entrances suffering with it.

The birds are chirping in the morning now , sure sign of spring approaching and husband saw a frog on footpath Oh and the Crocus's are coming up .

Even if it's a fools spring I have to say I'm enjoying wearing sunglasses again, I feel like there's a shield between me and the world. Also putting them on my head shoves my hair out of my face.
Never seem to need them with winter sun
