To be shocked by spring

Lighthearted

Does anyone else seem to get consumed into the season they're in?
I love autumn and early winter. Bonfire night is my fave, then Christmas is good. I'm always ready for cooler weather when it comes.

But by this time of year, it feels like its gone on forever. I'm not depressed by it (my husband is) but it's like I've fully adapted to winter life - and then suddenly completely bemused by warmth again.

The sun's come out here this afternoon and there's some warmth in it. We have a coat we put on if going out for a smoke- I've put it on on autopilot but actually too hot with it out here. And made myself a hot water bottle for bed last night, like every single night since November but it was actually way too hot for it.

I feel like after over 30 years on this earth I should be able to keep a weather eye on things and slowly ease into spring but it takes me by surprise. I am quite a creature of habit and maybe a bit oblivious to my surroundings. I was so overdone on heat last summer, and now it's like I'm incredulous, emerging blinking into the light like after some long armageddon-style winter.

It's only been 4 months!!

I’m astounded every year when the clocks go back in autumn - how can it be dark so early?!? I am over 50..

It’s been an incredibly mild winter though, so even though I prefer the summer, I do feel a bit cheated. Saying that last winter was bloody Baltic and that was horrible.

BingoMarieHeeler · 18/02/2024 19:57

I know what you mean. It’s a surprise it’s arriving, even though have been longing for spring! This has been the longest winter ever!

Mrspatmoresspoon · 18/02/2024 20:00

January seemed to last forever but feb is flying by. March and spring in a week and a bit!

MadeOfAllWork · 18/02/2024 20:02

Well it’s not spring yet….

Quizine · 18/02/2024 20:15

The clocks should go forward at the end of January, and back at the end of November. That's all I want!

Hiddenmnetter · 18/02/2024 20:16

Saw the daffs out today and was shocked that winter was over😂

Unex · 18/02/2024 20:16

I always feel genuine relief when spring arrives, as if one year it might not.
I do struggle with winter

SgtJuneAckland · 18/02/2024 20:19

DH thought his luck was in last night when I stripped off in the middle of the night, until he realised it was accompanied by me glugging water and muttering about being sweaty.
If it carries on the winter duvet is going off to the launderette and then getting packed away until autumn

Haruka · 18/02/2024 20:26

I was glad to be able to dry some washing out this weekend. It hasn't been dry since early summer last year, though.

Plenty of rain still to come, and the river banks around here are bursting on a regular basis and my garden is mud.

I haven't been able to prepare my garden for spring yet at all - the usual winter pruning had to wait because of the constant rain and it hasn't been dry enough since, well, June last year, to get much done around the garden. So I'm part looking forward to a proper spring and part dreading it because of the neglect that happened during the downpours that were last year.

So I'm not feeling it, although my wallet is grateful that my energy bill won't be as high as dreaded this month.

I seen my first bumblebee of the year 2 days ago 🐝

Missingmyusername · 18/02/2024 20:34

I used to love summer, now I hate it and prefer winter unless I’m on holiday/there’s no work.

QueenBean22 · 18/02/2024 20:36

I’m loving the signs of spring. My Dad died at Christmas and I’m noticing all of his spring bulbs pushing through the last week or two. It’s heartening to see signs of him

Treehugger22 · 18/02/2024 20:38

I love spring but I'm a spring baby. Hate winter glad it's nearly over

Fionaville · 18/02/2024 20:39

I absolutely love having four well defined seasons (summer being the only one that can let me down, when it's a wash out) It's one of the best things about living in this country.
I've enjoyed a relaxed winter, I'm looking forward to the fresh start/new year feeling of spring.

You’ve fallen for Fool’s Spring! We’ve still
got March’s snowstorms to come.

Yep.
I've known full covered snow streets in March and April.
I did a clear out this week and was going to vacuum pack my coats away then rethought it. I give a couple of weeks before my thickest coat is back on again. Those cute little flowers are in on it to trick us 😂

MoonlitButterfly · 18/02/2024 21:02

All I know is this autumn and winter has been too wet and mild, I long for cold dry days, I'm fed up of wading through mud and being soaked to the skin

PicturesOfLily · 18/02/2024 21:59

I have enjoyed the crocuses and daffodils poking through in my front yard. I didn’t enjoy finding a large wasp in the dining room on Friday! Agree with others that I’ve had enough of rain now!

gamerchick · 18/02/2024 22:01

Don't we usually get fools spring this time of year?

ChelseeDagger · 18/02/2024 22:06

I literally cry with relief once spring arrives.
Winter feels so treacherous to me.

TotHappy · 18/02/2024 22:13

We very rarely get snow here in the south west. It may be cold again soon, but spring is definitely here. The light is different.

It's felt like a cold winter to me, extra cold and dark! The rain is nothing new, we always get tons of rain. I think my memory of last winter must be skewed - 22/23 that is- I don't remember it being cold at all, but I was heavily pregnant so personally insulated.

MurderMitts · 18/02/2024 22:13

I'm an absolute grumpy bag and I'm flipping overjoyed spring is coming- it's very scary how much everything is changing though.

The robins are still here and I'm not seeing many male blackbirds at all but loads of females are about

MyFirstLittlePony · 18/02/2024 22:19

It's a very very early spring this year

It's Match weather here in the South, 15 degrees today which is 7 degrees warmer than average this time of year

I love spring, but this feels weird and disconcerting

KnittedCardi · 18/02/2024 22:29

TotHappy · 18/02/2024 18:56

It's quite rare. There's still a good risk of frost so they're taking a chance coming out now. And slim pickings on nectar I would've thought, although some things are out (crocuses)

We have two blossom trees fully out. Plums. They were so full of bees, honey and bumble, that they were shaking and vibrating, the noise was amazing. Also had Brimstone, Peacock and Red Admiral butterflies. The hellebores are out, as are some pulmonaria, so quite a lot to eat. Hope it doesn't to get frosty though. Oh, and the cat dumped a tick on my bed this morning, not so nice.....

Lampslights · 18/02/2024 22:31

I don’t mind if we have a blip of a couple of cold days, it’s clear winter is on the way out,and spring is happily swishing her way in. So any cold spells will be a brief.

the crocuses, camellias, snow drops, I expected. But when I saw the bright yellow daffodils standing proud in the garden a week ago I was a little surprised.

curiously the wild garlic doesn’t usually come up till late spring but it’s starting to come up and ground cover now , hope any frost kills it, it’s a complete thug.😂

TheYearOfSmallThings · 18/02/2024 22:32

It was 17° one day last week in London, and I never watch the weather news so I dressed for February and genuinely thought I was having hot flushes or something. Couldn't work out what was going on.
