DH threw away my wedding ring!

I wish this was a joke. But it isn't. How would you handle this?

DH has a brain injury and can do things that make no sense. We usually laugh his mistakes off.

He was tidying the kitchen. I was in bed. I'd forgotten I'd taken my ring off in the kitchen. It was wet, so he wrapped it in kitchen roll. Promptly forgot.

DH threw rubbish in bin. Took bin out. Council emptied bins.

I realised next day. He remembered throwing wet kitchen roll away.

DH is mortified. I'm trying not be to upset around him because I know it was an accident and he doesn't think clearly.

But honestly I'm absolutely devastated.

What a beautiful update. Love that the replacement ring already has its own tale to tell.

Breeblebree · 18/02/2024 11:42

I think your solution is wonderful. I damaged my wedding ring beyond repair. I was sad. I then had it remade but mixed with gold from his mother’s ring, and other meaningful bits, so (just like yours does being from the same company with the same words) the new ring was connected to the old, but new.

I actually think it is perfect. You make this promise with this shiny new ring when you are young and starry eyed, and you don’t really know what will happen. Then, when time has proven your love, you sometimes have to get a new ring, because things happen. Which makes sense to me because relationships aren’t static, the people in them aren’t the same as they were that day they said I do, why would the ring have to be?

Relationships are built up of the moments you spend, the people who entwine you, the silly things that happen, the trouble you face together. And it gives you a chance to repromise, but now with age and experience behind you, and with your eyes wide open. And that is so much more real.

It’s not a ring that symbolises a promise anymore, it’s a ring that symbolises a life already shared, a promise kept. It’s not an “I do” ring anymore, but an “I already have” ring. And I think that’s kind of beautiful.

I may have something in my eye....

I have been following this and I can't believe the amount of posters who (despite it being repeated at least 3 times) are blaming the OP for wrapping her ring in paper! Surely if you are going to comment on a post, you should read it properly first?

I'm so sorry about your ring but I'm glad you've found a way to move forward.

My dad died a few years ago and I was given his wedding ring. Looked after it so carefully. When I went on holiday I cunningly hid it in an open packet of nappies in DC's room to foil any burglars.

Completely forgot I'd done that. DC stopped wearing nappies that holiday. A few months later I got around to clearing out all the old baby stuff - nappies went in the bin. With the ring.

I still feel sick about it and have sleepless nights thinking about it. There's nothing I can do but I hate myself for being so careless. Dad looked after it for 50 years and then he died and I lost it. I honestly don't know how to move past it.

Lovely post from @Breeblebree

The ring company sounds worthy of commendation too!

You made us both cry. Thank you. That's the way I shall think of it.

My "I already have" ring.

Oh my gosh. That's so much more painful.

I'm so very sorry.

My DH lost his wedding ring while cycling. He had recently lost weight and he just didn't notice it fall off. We walked a bit of the route he took to look for it but couldn't find it. I suggested buying another one but he said it wouldn't be the same.

One thing I've learned from this thread is - don't wrap jewellery up in tissue.😊

Spencer0220 · 18/02/2024 17:05

DH wears his on a necklace because it no longer fits.

I'm amazed how many people have lost rings! I found out this morning my sister was on her third. I had no idea.

This is a lovely thread, the posters that reached out to you, and the fact you've found a solution that is special to the two of you. I also feel a bit sentimental reading about it.

Galeforcewindatmywindow · 18/02/2024 19:46

Married a week dh rang me hysterical.. He had lost his wedding ring at Asda....
During the call I heard a lady shouting of him. She had found it on the bg packing area. I thought something had happened to him or ds!

Motnight · 18/02/2024 19:54

What a lovely thread.

So pleased to read your update, Op.

I joined Brighton list and found group on Facebook and every single day there are at least a few rings, mobile phones and car keys, it’s bafflingly common apparently.

Spencer0220 · 20/02/2024 01:45

Unfortunately mine isn't going to turn up. It's in a rubbish tip somewhere!!
