Andthereyougo I don't know if you were being funny, but that statement made me smile :)

Alexa ís the name of a bag.

It's up to you what you like. Wouldn't be seen dead with one myself. Totally impractical and a fairly hideous colour for a bag.

You did ask.

ps. this whole thread/OP is so cringe! Blush I am embarrassed for you.

Is that necessary? Your post screams jealousy

I don’t really like those colours together but whatever suits you

Any reason this is in AIBU not Style and Beauty?

Traffic.

@redboots765 I always see this about “old money” in old cars and moth eaten clothes. Is this truly people’s experience? I grew up in Chelsea, really wealthy area, people living in flats worth £2million and houses worth triple. Loads of Hermes, Chanel, goyard around. I wouldn’t say it was full of “new money” My friend’s school bag was Chanel, her dad is an earl and she’s definitely “old money” I do wonder where this stereotype has actually come from? Even the horsey crowd had designer stuff! So whenever I see this about really rich people not buying designer it makes me wonder.

LemmysBullet · 17/02/2024 17:28

Is that right? Alexa works if you take it with you ? Well, every day’s a school day.

Sweetest comment of the day.

You are correct. I had a similar upbringing to you and no, rich people don't all dress in rags. People who think that they do have read too many threads on the Daily Mail written by so called 'experts' who make up a bunch of nonsense in order to keep the peasants on side. That said, it is true that there is a difference between old and new money, and it is visible. Old money is IME slightly more likely to mix schlubby looks with smartness, so ripped grubby jeans with an expensive bag. Old money also are thinner on average, think that Sloane look. Cara Delevingne, not Kylie Jenner. But to suggest that the wealthy do not spend money on their appearance is absurd.

Yes it's tacky, but in a sad way. It's not a thing of beauty, the colours are garish. It was purchased as a status item..that's why it's sad. Op could have bought something stunning. Not pebbled leather.

It's your opinion that it's 'tacky'. A lot of people would find what you like tacky.

Again some people will love those colours, others won't, and that's ok.

Op has stated that she bought it because she loves it, not for status.

You're stating your opinions as facts, which they are not.

redboots765 · 17/02/2024 17:36

@Ithinkitstimeforbed Yes it's very true. They do have very expensive things but you won't really notice them if you see what I mean. Everyone shoots/ sails (not me) Dinner parties are private chef catered with staff.

It's not people with 6m pound houses, it's people who have to allow commoners access to the grounds, to fund the 1m roof repairs. 😂 It's a really interesting world.

Nanalisa60 · 17/02/2024 17:37

OYSTER AND CHAMPAGNE lucky old you !! Have a lovely trip. Sorry I wouldn’t thank you for the bag!! But each to there own.

Angelsrose · 17/02/2024 17:38

It's beautiful. Enjoy.

bunnybunnybunnybunny · 17/02/2024 17:38

I will posit it's a wallet on a chain rather than a bag, but either way, enjoy your purchase OP. (I have a lovely Phoebe Philo for Céline woc as well as a denim Chanel one. I love both and use them so much.

Designer bags threads always bring out a bitchiness and snideness in some posters. Just ignore them.

For those asking re. duty free pricing. OP is flying to the US, so would have not had to pay VAT.

Ithinkitstimeforbed · 17/02/2024 17:45

@LovelyTheresa I agree especially with the DM comments and totally get your point of Cara vs Kylie!

@redboots765 truthfully this confuses me, we’re talking about the same people. My friend with the earl for a dad, he has a country house and he has land where he hosts festivals. They sail, they shoot, they have caterers (hell even if I get caterers, is that a mark of money!?) and they also have Cartier or Patek watches, Porsche Macans and Chanel bags. I promise I’m not trying to be difficult, it is just such a disconnect between the experiences!

Isabelle70 · 17/02/2024 17:47

Enjoy your bag Op, such lovely happy spring colours.

Valtine2 · 17/02/2024 17:50

@Ithinkitstimeforbed I think you are correct too. There's a difference though so how you grew up and your surrounding circle may be known for a certain type of school bag....

Maybe the other new money people may not have that same type of channel bag! I think what people actually mean is old money does tend to be less shouty in your face sort of thing its not that anyone thinks old money people don't actually spend money on designer.

TerfTalking · 17/02/2024 17:52

The bag is foul and I prefer my oysters with shallot vinegar and my champagne rose, but each to their own.

InterIgnis · 17/02/2024 17:56

redboots765 · 17/02/2024 17:15

@InterIgnis

It means old money though doesn't it. Old money rarely spend on flashy things. My neighbour is stately home rich. (actual Manor House) I get invited to dinner parties, everyone looks like they are wearing clothes from two dacades ago 😂 You might see an old Mullberry bag, but you can guarantee it's 30 years old, and from a time when handbags were not such status symbols.
You will be served incredibly expensive wine, and the guests cars will be a mix of AM and straw filled VW.

That seems to be the popular conception of what ‘old money’ is like, even if it doesn’t reflect the reality. Old money spends on what it likes, same as new money. People are people ultimately, you’ll find the understated and the ‘flashy’ across all social classes. Understated old money may not buy a Gucci bag, but that doesn’t mean they’re shying away from spending thousands on Loro Piana.

Also, class doesn’t denote wealth. A lot of the sneering against ‘the flashy’ is often a case of sour grapes because ‘new money’ has popped up with more money than them, and thus needs to be put in their place.

Ithinkitstimeforbed · 17/02/2024 17:57

@Valtine2 Yes, I suppose stereotypically it’s like having the 2.55 instead of the classic flap, less blingy. I still think it’s working on stereotypes that have been exaggerated 🤷‍♀️

anyway this is a bit of a derail! I’m sure the OP is on her flight and will hopefully enjoy her bag on her holiday!

This 100 times!

redboots765 · 17/02/2024 17:59

@Ithinkitstimeforbed yes hiring a private chef, with two kitchen staff and three waitresses, that is a mark of money. I should think most people know that.

Also owning a boat and hiring staff, so that you can pop off to some small island, is also costly. It's not whizzing around in a dinghy.

Mumof2NDers · 17/02/2024 18:00

Handbags aren’t really my thing, or oysters, or champagne. But good for you for treating yourself to things you love!
Have a great time.

OP may love it, but I doubt she’d have bought it if it was identical but not Gucci…..

Timeisallwehave · 17/02/2024 18:02

£790 is not bad for a bag but I don’t know what Gucci were thinking combining yellow and purple together.

Toadstool1985 · 17/02/2024 18:05

She didn't buy it for you though. She bought it for herself and loves it so saying its sad is just either spiteful or stupid just for the sake of it.

Ithinkitstimeforbed · 17/02/2024 18:05

@redboots765 so they’re hiring chefs and owning large boats with staff but can’t fund roof repairs? This still doesn’t make sense to me! Anyway as I said before it’s a derail for a thread about a bag but I’ve found it interesting!

Yes it's the GG that's the status marker.

Plus the staging of the oysters and champagne, in the shot.

Bit like an instagram/influencer post!
