schneebly · 23/03/2008 13:07

our somerfield is open

scouserabroad · 23/03/2008 13:07

yabu, aren't there enough other days when the shops are open?

NatalieJane · 23/03/2008 13:08

What scouser said.

FGS it's one day.

PuppyMonkey · 23/03/2008 13:09

I know scouser, but I've gotta work all week. Plus I'm bored...

Just do it tomorrow. I'm sure your family won't starve.

RustyBear · 23/03/2008 13:11

It's pretty pointless them being closed though -DD has a weekend job at Woolie's & she's had to go in today to do stocktaking, which pretty much defeats any conceivable reason for them being closed.

Psychomum5 · 23/03/2008 13:13

I forgot that they would be shut today.

especially bad considering the in-laws are coming and I am to be doing a roast for 15 today!!!!!

all sorted tho thankfully now as tesco express open here, but TBH, if my brian was waorking then I would have remembered as easter sunday and xmas are the two holidays they are shut for!

PuppyMonkey · 23/03/2008 13:16

Yep, I forgot too otherwise would have been super organised and done it yesterday. I'm sure also a couple of years back there was a big hoo ha and it was decided they COULd open on Easter Sunday after all.

Or was that just B&Q?

OP posts:
Psychomum5 · 23/03/2008 13:18

I think it was done so that the shops could choose to be open IYGWIM.

most tho still choose to shut as the workers still like the guarantee of a day with the family

PuppyMonkey · 23/03/2008 13:21

Thanks Psycho ... Right, I suppose the only option now is the pub...

RustyBear · 23/03/2008 13:30

No, they looked into it but decided there was no reason to change - shops over 280 sq m are still required to close on Christmas Day & Easter Sunday.
There are some categories of large shop which can open (the first on the list, rather oddly, is shops which only sell alchohol) None of the categories as far as I can see covers B&Q, unless they have re-designated all their shops as 'exhibition stands'

Of course, all this only applies in England & Wales...

PuppyMonkey · 23/03/2008 13:36

Ta Rusty... you've answered all my questions with that link!..

"Shops that sell motor or bicycle supplies and accessories.." Cos we can't live without them being open can we??

Psychomum5 · 23/03/2008 13:37

stand corrected then....I thought it had been passed and now easter sunday was in the same class as boxing day....as we all know that boxing day is now classed as a sunday/bank holiday and so open for sales etc (which is utterly galling when you go a see everything you bought even on xmas eve is now half price)

geordiemacminx · 23/03/2008 15:19

Our tesco is open 24 hours today Scotland rocks

oh fgs you can't do without shops for ONE DAY?

they used to be shut every Sunday

how did we even survive

seb1 · 23/03/2008 15:36

DH was at ASDA this morning all their easter eggs were reduced, luckily he restrained himself.

ladywombling · 23/03/2008 15:42

yep

lucyellensmum · 23/03/2008 16:03

We went shopping on friday, we had run out of stuff and had the time, but it was like people were panic buying, it was like christmas - hell on earth so it was. Overflowing trollies, over tired toddlers. WTF, the shop is only shut for one day - i preferred it when the shops were shut on sunday to be honest. Too easy to fall back on, oh, well we will look round the shops then. Mind you, getting a bit pissed off with the weather now

tallulah · 23/03/2008 16:54

Yes YABU. The shops are closed on 2 days a year out of 365.

Why shouldn't retail workers get a break like everyone else

sparklyfairypie · 23/03/2008 16:56

Just been to morrisons, its open, as is mother care, some cheapy shop and sommerfield

business as usual here! (glasgow)

expatinscotland · 23/03/2008 16:59

LOL!

You should try living out here.

You can't even get a prescription filled on Sunday - ANY Sunday - without travelling at least an hour, including a 30 minute ferry crossing.

About the only thing open on Sunday are petrol garages and pubs.

I'm slowly going insane.

Jojay · 23/03/2008 17:00

YABU - as others have said, it's only 2 days a year FGS!!

Give us poor retail workers a break! We have to do virtually every other shi**y shift when the majority of the country are at home with their feet up.

And yes, I am off to work tomorrow. Can't wait.

seb1 · 23/03/2008 17:01

Are you thinking of moving somewhere less rural expat?
