daughter was asked to leave homebase because she's under 18?

My daughter and her friend (both 15) went shopping yesterday and nipped into Homebase as my daughter wanted a plant and her friend wanted a heated blanket. They were approached by a member of staff who said “what age are you both you don’t look old enough to be in here” they replied 15. The member of staff asked them to leave as you need to be 18 to shop. My daughter is very straight forward and says how it is, she told the member of staff no as that is not true. The girls continued to walk around the store and they were followed by this lady who works there. They got to the till and paid with no issues the employee at the till didn’t mention age. My daughter told me this when she got home and explained the employee was rude and followed them around the store as well as giving them “dirty looks” I rung the store today to speak to a manager as that customer service is not okay. He told me you do infact need to be with an adult 18+ to shop. Is this serious? I can’t find anything on the website.

Please mind your language as I'm sure you would not say that to the face of the poster you are responding to.

Chats can become heated but no point is using foul language as it makes your argument look weak,

This made me laugh more than they all stood up and clapped post upthread.

You don't get to tell people not to swear on here.

PhoenixStarbeamer · 15/02/2024 19:39

I'd email head office to check that. If it's correct, you then know. If it's wrong they need to talk to their staff. If it is wrong I'd then put in a complaint. But I don't like being lied to and talked to like crap. My quiet, autistic son and his equally quiet, wouldn't say boo to a goose (as they bloody hate social interaction) friend were refused entry to Bowlplex once and told they need to be with an adult. I emailed and it was a complete lie and they got an apology and 2 free games. The staff just couldn't be bothered to work it seems. The manager got a talking to apparently.

A young woman sticking up for herself is not rude and doesn't make her a madam.

What a small life you must live if you genuinely don't believe that grown women would say "What the fuck?" in real life. 😂

It's not a "small life" I live, but the one you dream about 😂

Being asked to leave a store by a staff member and refusing does.

The part were she didn't leave the store when asked by a staff member and told her how it is.

You mean, she dared to question authority? How dare she! OP, good on your daughter. You’re obviously doing something right if she can stand up for herself appropriately at this age.

Being asked to leave a store by a staff member and refusing does.

Do you honestly believe that no one should stand up for themselves, simply because they were asked not to?

How do you feel about protests, marches, civil disobedience? A fan of the suffragette movement at all? Or were they too rude?

Being asked to leave a store when you've done nothing wrong and saying no is not rude. Sticking up for yourself against idiots is not rude. They took her money so there was obviously no issue.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 15/02/2024 19:50

So despite speaking to the store manager on the phone, and him confirming this is the store's policy - you decide to post this because you have never heard of it before ?

Thus you are saying the manager lied to you.

LakeTiticaca · 15/02/2024 19:50

They probably had issues with juvenile nuisance like many retail outlets do these days

"My daughter is very straight forward and says how it is" is basically code for "my Daughter is rude" dressed up as a positive.

Edited

And the same people also tend to say: at least I say it to your face when insulting someone GrinGrin

DinnaeFashYersel · 15/02/2024 19:51

@Chersfrozenface

16yr olds can get married

Not since 27 February last year

The Marriage and Civil Partnership (Minimum Age) Act 2022, which gained Royal Assent in April last year, has come into force today (27 February). It means that 16 and 17 year olds will no longer be allowed to marry or enter a civil partnership, even if they have parental consent.

Gov.uk

England and Wales only

Manager from Bowlplex (hollywood bowl) lied to me about their policy. I emailed head office and he got in trouble. It happens.

Hopefully, next time tell it like it is little madam decides to skulk around homebase and then lie to her mother about what's completely gone on. They'll get security to escort her out.

Then they can do their best compo faces in the gazette.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 15/02/2024 19:53

If it was one overzealous staff member trying to wage a one woman war against teens in general it would be one thing, but it's wasn't - OP said the manager told her that the staff member was correct and it is the policy.

Our Homebase doesn't have security, it's not something that's normal in any of our local shops.

So the staff member on the door told the DD and friend the correct policy. Instead of listening and doing as they were told they told the staff they were 'wrong' and insisted in coming in anyway. What should the staff member have done at that point? They could either ignore them and put their job at risk if something happened and thy were asked why they didn't stop them coming in, or they could follow them around to make sure they behaved and stayed safe.

The person at the till probably judged that they'd either been IDd already and were 18+ or if it's obvious they're 16, that the quickest way to get them out was to let them pay rather than cause a scene by refusing to serve them.

The DD was rude. It's not 'standing up for yourself' or 'telling it like it is' (not least because she was wrong!) If I went in a restaurant and was told, you can't come in in jeans, there's a dress code, you need to leave - and I said 'that's not true, you're wrong' and insisted on going in anyway, of course that's bloody rude!

Lemoncurd · 15/02/2024 19:54

Someone posted on our local Facebook group saying the same thing happened to their teenager in Homebase a couple of weeks ago. They said they contacted Homebase via social media and were told that there was no such policy.

EffortlesslyInelegant · 15/02/2024 19:56

Oh fuck me dead! The fucking swearing police are here. Fan-fucking-tastic.

I'd swear to your face Distinguished. Happily and repeatedly. HTH.

nadine90 · 15/02/2024 19:56

But they employ under 18s (or at least they used to)?! I could understand it if it was a rule tbh, given there will be dangerous things in there. But that the employee didn’t call security to remove them, or tell her colleague not to serve them, tells me they may have been bullshitting. I’ve worked with people in retail who liked to judge people and throw their authority around. I’m glad your daughter got what she went in for, and got to practice standing up for herself x

Trust me you would not swear to my or the other poster's face. I'll let you have the last word.

Except she wasn't swearing AT the OP, she was just swearing. I can assure many of us would swear to any of the posters on here in RL. Why are you so offended by a perfectly normal statement?

I always wonder about this when you read on here of people being on their own from 16. Off topic but annoying nonetheless.

I got married 4 weeks after my 17th birthday. We had our flat before my birthday, I went about cheerfully buying stuff for it and no one asked my age. Maybe it was different back then.

TBH, it was a tongue in cheek comment.
However, I do not swear at home or where I worked
People swearing is a big put off for me especially when I see ladies, ie aged 21 or over as they should know better, it makes them look crass IMO

Please feel free to carry on swearing, your choice.

"Ladies". 🙄It's the 21st century.
