My daughter and her friend (both 15) went shopping yesterday and nipped into Homebase as my daughter wanted a plant and her friend wanted a heated blanket. They were approached by a member of staff who said “what age are you both you don’t look old enough to be in here” they replied 15. The member of staff asked them to leave as you need to be 18 to shop. My daughter is very straight forward and says how it is, she told the member of staff no as that is not true. The girls continued to walk around the store and they were followed by this lady who works there. They got to the till and paid with no issues the employee at the till didn’t mention age. My daughter told me this when she got home and explained the employee was rude and followed them around the store as well as giving them “dirty looks” I rung the store today to speak to a manager as that customer service is not okay. He told me you do infact need to be with an adult 18+ to shop. Is this serious? I can’t find anything on the website.

The range used to have a notice of no under 16s on the door. Your daughter seems very rude.

“Rude”.. who cares. It was rude being asked to leave just because of their age. The kid sounds fine standing up for themselves and being confident about doing so.

What a fucking nightmare. Why does everyone collude in infantalising teenagers. It's amazing they're even allowed to go to school now without their mummies. They can't work, can't go to a dentist alone, can't shop, but it's OK to go to a Dr alone for the pill or to ask school to change their gender? Total hypocrisy

Hear you Doone 22. By law people can marry and have kids but not be responsible enough to enter a DiY store. First house we purchased I had bloke asking to see parents as he was selling stuff. I said why do you need to see them I say what i buy in my own home. His face was a picture. I understand laws around certain things these shops sell but kids aren’t banned from supermarkets and they sell knives .

Granddaughter and a friend was asked to leave because it wasn't 18 and the staff said she didn't tell them somebody else did but I confronted her about this and she said it's the law what law I've never heard of this she said it's out there on the door so you have to be the parent so he went outside to show me and it wasn't on the door and I said well if you're going to quote anything you need to have on the wall so people can read it then she said here it is it's on the till so we went to the till and she grabbed this couple of cards and signs but actually state if you're going to buy something like sharps or paint sprayer chemicals if you appear to look under 25 we will ask you for proof of age when buying age restricted products. I think the acting manager is either dyslexic or doesn't know her rules and regulations or company policies
because it doesn't say anywhere and the signs she shown me and tried to make me look a fool in front of all the shop staff that state you have to have a parent with you or be over 18 doesn't say that anywhere they'regetting there laws and rules mixed up or policies mixed up this is pathetic my granddaughter and a friend wasn't buying anything they dangerous they were just looking at Christmas trees and a present for grandads birthday ,she vehemently argued with me that I was wrong and she wanted my details I told her your not getting my details. I called head office who are disgusted and appalled at this behaviour from this home base manager jobs worth

Why have you resurrected a zombie thread and posted a picture of a Homebase staff member?

They would struggle to have their own flat at 16 as they can’t enter into a contract at that age.

Wrong. As it's an essential, minors can contract for housing. This was tested in law many years ago.
