I'm recovering from serious illness, I may have months until I’m back to work. We have sky, Netflix, Disney plus and Amazon prime. I need recommendations as I’ve watched far too much daytime tv! I’m quite keen on true crime and detective shows. Don’t mind dramas. So what have you watched lately that you would recommend? What books have you not been able to put down?

If you haven[t seen Detectorists, get the box set.
Lovely, gentle comedy series.

Onautopilot1 · 14/02/2024 02:02

Donna Leon books set in Venice,
Louise Penny set in Quebec. Excellent writers alongside Anne Cleeves

sleepandcoffee · 14/02/2024 02:05

Broadchurch is brilliant if you've not seen it before

TheTripThatWasnt · 14/02/2024 07:40

Have you watched Taskmaster? All 15/16 series available on catch up.

Slow Horses. You'd need to get an Apple TV sub but there's a bunch of free trials available eg if you have an EE mobile contract or an iPhone. Watch the TV series and then read all the books (Mick Herron, there's at least nine of them ).

Yes this!! It's the best thing ever made, I swear.

Succession close second maybe 😊

olympicsrock · 14/02/2024 07:51

Lady Killers podcast on BBC sounds. There is a whole series of historical true crime.

Member984815 · 14/02/2024 08:07

Dark on Netflix, it's excellent

Bin85 · 14/02/2024 12:17

Hunted
Celebrity Hunted
Hunted Australia
Channel 4
And I think the German one is on You Tube

The Crown
Downton Abbey
Poirot
Miss Marple
Inspector Morse

All easy enough watch when you are recovering and not feeling 100%

Oo I've just thought: Tony Hillerman. Thrillers set among Native American tribes in the west.

Very bingeable.

TimeforaGandT · 14/02/2024 15:21

The Americans (Disney+ I think) - it’s great.

NorthernSoul55 · 14/02/2024 15:49

Many of my favourites mentioned already, but can I recommend Kin, 2 series on iplayer, about rival drug gangsters in Dublin. The violence is a bit rich at times but if you can bear that it's gripping.
(American Dirt is about a family fleeing the cartels in Mexico and trying to reach the USA, and is brilliant).
Get well soon.
Ps Sky vip has a 6 month apple tv trial for Slow Horses

Theonlylonely · 14/02/2024 15:57

Mr and Mrs Smith on Amazon Prime- kooky love story with cameo stars - much better than the film

One Day on Netflix- epic friends to lovers romance based on the book (tearjerker) … also much better than the earlier film!

Abracadabra12345 · 14/02/2024 15:59

I'm re-watching Sherlock on IPlayer and it's absolutely fantastic.

ItLiterallyJustSaysFoldInTheCheese · 14/02/2024 16:22

Book: An eye for an eye

It's not for the faint hearted as pretty graphic in places but it's taking the idea of child killers (the likes of James Bulger' killers) who have served their time in juvenile, then released as a young adult, given new identities and in theory, a new chance at living a good life. Somebody starts leaking the new identities to the victim's families and of course, leads to anger, revenge etc. It's fiction, btw! Such a good book though and very gripping.

Hope the recovery goes well.

I blame Marvel for not having anymore Sherlock. I loved it.

Fargo series 5, Amazon prime - just about to watch the last episode - absolutely cracking. Can't speak to the other seasons but this one is so good.

Currently binging One Day on netflix which is lovely.

Have you watched Ghosts on BBC, proper comfort telly, so beautiful and funny.

I can see people have recommended Harlan Coben TV shows - I'm not really a fan of those but the books are great fun, easy reads and quite addictive.

Glad you are enjoying it. There is a book too but I can't remember the author's name.
