I'm recovering from serious illness, I may have months until I’m back to work. We have sky, Netflix, Disney plus and Amazon prime. I need recommendations as I’ve watched far too much daytime tv! I’m quite keen on true crime and detective shows. Don’t mind dramas. So what have you watched lately that you would recommend? What books have you not been able to put down?

And wtf is Doctors? If only my work at a GPs surgery had as much drama lol.

I've been reading the Cormoran Strike detective books and really enjoyed them. The TV adaptation of the first few books is on BBC Iplayer and there's a new one being filmed soon.

TM1979 · 13/02/2024 20:59

We watched Dopesick recently on Disney. Thought it was very good.

JustAnotherDayWorkingAtHome · 13/02/2024 20:59

I am currently watching desperate housewives on Disney plus. Never watched it when it came out 20 years ago. It's great.

Books - The Shape of Water by Andrea Camilleri

TV - The Tinder Swindler on Netflix

And if you want something to listen to try Love Bombed on BBC Sounds.

ThirtyThrillionThreeTrees · 13/02/2024 21:09

American Nightmare on Netflix, while seeming unbelievable, is based on a true story.

Sins of Our Mother is another one - true crime drama - not an easy watch at times but very good

Till Murder Do Us Part - again based in true story. Good watch

I've Slow Horses on my list to get to - everyone is recommending it.

DrunkenElephant · 13/02/2024 21:13

I assume you’ve watched Happy Valley?

Books wise, The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns are two of my favourites.

Icequeen01 · 13/02/2024 21:14

We are enjoying the latest series (series 4) of True Detective - Night Country with Jodie Foster. Really good and very spooky. It's on Sky.

NeedToKnow101 · 13/02/2024 21:14

Griselda is fab.

mumzy67 · 13/02/2024 21:15

Pluto tv is an app that's free on my smart tv and has a whole true crime section along with lots of other options too :)

Gwlondon · 13/02/2024 21:21

Criminal minds is great. It’s old. 19 series. So worth it.

Also you could go back to old things you watched and re watch them. You probably won’t remember. Like House if you haven’t seen it.

I had never watched the IT crowd before. It’s is funny.

Books - the goldfinch, Donna Tart. Lessons in Chemistry, Bonnie ? I can’t remember!

Good luck with your recovery.

Dilemmadilemma23 · 13/02/2024 21:24

Books-anything by John Marrs. ‘The One ‘is my personal favourite. Hope you on the mend soon.

Ilovelurchers · 13/02/2024 21:24

If you want a fairly easy read but also absorbing, and enjoy crime fiction, I've been really enjoying Anne Cleeves at the moment and would recommend them. She wrote the Vera books and the Shetland series. The characters are really likeable and the settings are good. I am just reading her latest ones about her new detective, Matthew Venn, now.

Get well soon!

EasternStandard · 13/02/2024 21:25

Reading Alive atm and it’s excellent

Normandy144 · 13/02/2024 21:26

If you have Sky then try Succession. 5 series of this. It's won golden gloves, Emmy's and baftas. Excellent show about a media conglomerate billionaire family in the US (think Murdoch meets Trump).

PJ04JCW · 13/02/2024 21:27

Just started silent witness from the beginning, never watched it before but it's great.

Wellhellooooodear · 13/02/2024 21:31

I personally love Lisa Jewell books. Perhaps not 'highbrow' enough for some but I think they're great. TV shows Happy Valley if you've not seen it already Unforgotten is also great. If you want to go a bit retro, you can't beat a bit of Cracker or Prime Suspect!

Chocolatefrenzy · 13/02/2024 21:35

Virgin river on Netflix....enjoy x

Theoscargoesto · 13/02/2024 21:47

Not really a telly person but if I had too, I’d maybe rewatch the West Wing.

Books: have you read Cutting for Stone? It’s brilliant. Also liked The Whalebone Theatre and A Gentleman in Moscow.

Allofaflutter · 13/02/2024 21:50

I loved the strike books so I’ll try them. Not seen happy valley either. So many good recommendations, thanks.

Not read cutting for stone. I’ll get in on my kindle app. Thanks 😊

Good idea about silent witness. I started Waking the dead from the beginning, nearly at the end. It’s weird seeing 2000 tech again. No smartphones for a start. So much haas moved on. The hair too 😂

Cracker! I had forgotten how good cracker was back in the day. Loved Robbie Coltraine as Fitz.

Allofaflutter · 13/02/2024 21:56

Succession that’s the one with Brian Cox?
