I'm recovering from serious illness, I may have months until I’m back to work. We have sky, Netflix, Disney plus and Amazon prime. I need recommendations as I’ve watched far too much daytime tv! I’m quite keen on true crime and detective shows. Don’t mind dramas. So what have you watched lately that you would recommend? What books have you not been able to put down?

The last book I couldn't put down was Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver, it's kind of a retelling of David Copperfield set in the opiod crisis in West Virginia.

Ilovemyshed · 13/02/2024 22:21

Also Sharpe , both books and TV.
Call the midwife from the beginning

Phineyj · 13/02/2024 22:22

Madoff: The Monster of Wall Street is interesting and gripping (Netflix).

I'd also recommend the works of Dorothy L Sayers. Period but if you get into them, there are lots!

Allofaflutter · 13/02/2024 22:23

Ooo Sean Bean at his best. 🥰

We just watched Nyad on Netflix and really enjoyed it.

Last year on the 50 Books thread we pretty much all loved Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver.

I learned to read Dickens by only reading a chapter at a time - ideal if you're not well. I never could read him.but now Bleak House is one of my favourite books.

BurbageBrook · 13/02/2024 22:23

My all time fave tv dramas...
Game of thrones
This is Us
Breaking bad
The sopranos

Books- I usually read literary fiction but if ill in bed I like something easy but gripping like a Stephen King.

BurbageBrook · 13/02/2024 22:24

Agree with @nothingcomestonothing Demon Copperhead is a brilliant book.

I didn’t watch traitors Uk as I can’t stand Claudia’s fringe lol. 😂 isn’t it amoung us but irl?

watch the two Australian series. Both good in their own way. (The second one is the best of ALL the Traitor series I have seen).

Hesma · 13/02/2024 22:31

I love The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah or anything by Lucinda Riley
Reacher on Prime, full Monty series on Disney plus

Allofaflutter · 13/02/2024 22:32

I hadn’t realised they did Australian versions. I just can’t watch Claudia I just want to cut her fringe. I’m sure she’s a lovely lady but ffs stop having your fringe in your eyes!

I binge watched Reacher before I got ill. Just finished it when I got taken ill. Reacher is great.

There are American versions as well.... Total immersion therapy! (and apparently French but I haven't found these yet and no idea about subtitles)x

Eggs2022 · 13/02/2024 22:39

The Cara Hunter (she’s the author, Adam Fawley is the detective) series is a really excellent crime series, and the Maeve Kerrigan series by Jane Casey is really good - has 10 books so it’ll keep you going for ages and you’ll be bet into it!

Allofaflutter · 13/02/2024 22:41

Sounds my type of thing Eggs, thanks.

Mindhunter on Netflix is brilliant.

Dimmies · 13/02/2024 23:53

Boy Swallows Universe on Netflix.

Moro93 · 13/02/2024 23:54

Outlander
Ghosts (UK one, not the US)

theduchessofspork · 14/02/2024 00:09

drama -
The Killing

Mare of Eastown

The good wife (long running legal drama but really good

Documentary -

Death on the staircase

don’t fuck with cats

Tinder Swindler

the curious case of Natalia Grace

Fiction -
Tana French’s novels (haven’t seen the TV adaptions but apparently good)

Factual -
Kiss myself goodbye - not exactly crime but a great yarn about someone who totally invented a persona for herself

podcast

Serial

All of the above are crimey - outside of that I’m just watching normal people, which is really good (I am always so behind )

ScottyDoesntKnow · 14/02/2024 00:12

The series Obliterated on Netflix! It’s action-packed but also very funny and tongue-in-cheek. Mission Impossible meets the Hangover.

Notsoslim · 14/02/2024 00:12

Following!

fandjango · 14/02/2024 00:17

Boy Swallows Universe is really good.

Also I have only recently watched Greys Anatomy for the first time and i'm now at S7 and quite enjoying it.

Definitely Succession too.

Books wise someone mentioned Jane Casey Mauve Kerrigan books and just reminded me I've a few of those to get caught up on too.

Hope you recover well

FionnulaTheCooler · 13/02/2024 20:58

I've been reading the Cormoran Strike detective books and really enjoyed them. The TV adaptation of the first few books is on BBC Iplayer and there's a new one being filmed soon.

@FionnulaTheCooler started watching this. Not read a cuckoo's calling since it came out. Really enjoyed ep1. Thanks!

fandjango · 14/02/2024 00:20

I've recently discovered John Marrs too. He writes psychological thrillers. He's quite good and has a good few books to get going with

fandjango · 14/02/2024 00:25

I should have written this all on one. I have issues with my hands so I have my kindle in a stand and have a page turner on it and it is so much more comfortable for me to be able to read comfortably. Treated myself to it after my last operation and it's been the best two things (stand and page turner) i've ever bought myself
