To think: Enough with Taylor Swift, the boyfriend, the Superbowl and the beer all over the news!!

Every news report, every newspaper that I've seen all have about TS and her kissing her 'winning' boyfriend (who doesn't seem that nice) at the Superbowl

There are many, MANY more important things to hear/read about than this.

OP posts:
Clafoutie · 12/02/2024 18:12

It has been headline news across all newspapers.

All over the news? Is it? I've heard more about it on MN than anywhere else.

It is headline news across every newspaper.

Chickpea17 · 12/02/2024 18:18

Haven't got a clue what you're talking about

Shf · 12/02/2024 18:18

The only thing that has been annoying me about it today, and I end up on a lot of news sites because of my job, is that I can’t decide if he’s hot or not. Is he hot under that beard? Or just big?

(As a disclaimer, I do read and think about other stuff too…)

Definitely hot. And 6'5"!

His brother's not bad either. 😍

Ha. That made me laugh @Shf. Google ‘Travis Kelce without beard’, lots of images to help you decide. 🤣

I like him with a moustache and no beard. 😅

I think people who say this is news that has passed them by do not really follow the news....it is every where. I listen to 5live (for news not sport) which is the leading BBC news outlet and it was pretty prevalent. Certainly covered in the Guardian and by the BBC and in my news feeds.

Shf · 12/02/2024 18:40

He looks like the main character in a steamy romance novel.

It really hasn’t on BBC 6 music, R4 or Times radio

I did hear the other news for today though

EasternStandard · 12/02/2024 18:46

Uber drivers, Labour MP, water co bonus, Rafah, NATO just from memory

No Swift here until this thread

MissingMoominMamma · 12/02/2024 18:49

I must be living under the aforementioned rock…

TonTonMacoute · 12/02/2024 18:54

One picture would have been enough, surely. The coverage is out of all proportion - and that's not even in the tabloid titles, it's in apparently 'grown up' titles.

Theonlylonely · 12/02/2024 18:55

They’re the new Posh and Becks. Remember when they garnered wall to wall coverage?

beguilingeyes · 12/02/2024 19:04

peakygold · 12/02/2024 16:18

Taylor Swift is the Kylie Minogue of our time. Manufactured pop star. Insipid, safe, bland, guarded.

Surely Kylie Minogue is the Kylie Minogue of our time. She's still around you know.

themusingsofaninsomniac · 12/02/2024 19:06

I wasn't aware of any of this until you drew attention to it 😅

Spirallingdownwards · 12/02/2024 19:10

Boyfriend doesn't seem nice / He's a big bloke

seems to me it's the OP that doesn't seem nice.

SgtJuneAckland · 12/02/2024 12:10

You read different papers to me

This. I knew nothing about it.

She's definitely massively overexposed now though (Phil Collins had this) and there will come a backlash. She's a pleasant enough girl with a so so voice and cheesy songs co-written with her team of songwriters that cater to a young, predominantly white female demographic.

Nonsense. Posh and Becks were equally famous, and both are global.

Swift is the big name here (sidenote, the half time show is also bigger than the game). Gridiron is a niche sport w/ 95% of the TV audience coming from North America. After he signed for them, Messi's MLS team (Miami something, really a minnow in the sport) has more social media followers than any Gridiron team.

Look at the page views for sports teams on Wikipedia (and this is just for the English language wikipedia, including all languages the gulf in views would be even more vast).

Swift is probably the biggest name in pop culture right now, certainly for the last 18 months when her current tour kicked off as really she wasn't among the biggest names in current music prior to that (her sales still aren't at Adele/Sheeran level though). Anything attached to her is news.. the backlash with her overexposure is inevitable though.

Even if you don't watch TV I don't understand how it's possible to not even know that Taylor Swift is a female? You don't read newspapers, listen to the radio or go outside either? Her eras tour is pretty big news and coming to the UK over the summer. You've never seen a poster for it or anything?

I read newspapers but nothing celebrity, meeja etc., I listen to the radio, Radio 4, I do surprisingly go outside. Is she's 'touring'? Whacko, I had no idea nor interest, if I saw a poster it's not something I would take any notice of.
I do love the inverted snobbery when one isn't manacled to pop 'culture', were someone to sneer because another poster knew nothing about a non pop 'culture' event the reaction would have been dire!

Welcome! We rock-dwellers need t-shirts.

SecondHandFurniture · 12/02/2024 21:29

It annoys me when people call Taylor Swift a bland pop star "of the moment". She's been releasing music for 18 years. 18! 2 years longer than Adele.

Honestly I think one of the worst things she did for herself was release Shake it Off as a lead single, because it's her only song that sounds like that and yet that's what people point to. Her lockdown albums are masterpieces.

JemimaTiggywinkles · 12/02/2024 21:36

It's just a way to denigrate a woman - a particularly easy target because most of her fans are women or girls too. She must be bland / fake / boring / whatever. Hundreds of millions of people are clearly wrong and she's actually crap Hmm

I still love an album of hers I bought more than 10 years ago.

SecondHandFurniture · 12/02/2024 22:43

Yes, there was a lovely thread where she was referred to as a "product" the other day.

Cocacolacarrie · 12/02/2024 22:48

Nanny0gg · 12/02/2024 12:09

Because it's all over the news. Unless you're living under a rock you've seen/watched/heard about it

So I am asking (I think) a perfectly reasonable question

How dumbed down do we have to be?

And yet this is the first I have heard of it.
