For me it’s got to be those massive bloody clocks made up of parts which get stuck to the wall. We’re house hunting at the moment and they’re in almost every kitchen. Those and navy walls nearly always coupled with wicker furniture and cheese plants - it feels like such a ‘done’ look now.

Interested to hear yours!

I have grey carpets upstairs, eyelet curtains, and builders’ white walls throughout. Sorry to those who are offended by my design faux pas. Not that I got much choice in walls and carpets!

I’d like the odd houseplant but the cats would eat them / knock them over so that’s a no-no.

i don’t understand all those massive clocks or the cheesy word art stuff everywhere. I hate kitchens where you only get one drawer (Linden Homes, I’m looking at you). And what’s wrong with a well-designed built-wardrobe?

pollyglot · 11/02/2024 21:55

Lack of books, and anything that tells you about the inhabitants.
lack of textural/natural elements - flat, lab/industrial-style, sterile look. Lack of "soul"
doilies and cutesy lace mats
over-bed cupboards with flanking wardrobes
lace curtains/sheers when no-one can see in. Pulled even on the most beautiful day.
quilted, shiny bedspreads
carpet in the bathroom
cheap mdf-type furniture - antiques/vintage are less expensive and better quality
loudly patterned curtains, specially at a window with lovely view. Subtle patterns ok
monotone rooms.
dominant TVs
mirrored furniture

Sonnet · 11/02/2024 21:55

White walls everywhere
grey sparkly carpets especially paired with diamanté light fittings/ ornaments
huge canvas kids photos
leather sofas, twigs and pebbles AKA NEXT circa 2000,s

My job means I’m visiting houses all the time.

I am SO bored of crittal style doors, including in the bathroom, panelling everywhere, grey kitchens with a contrasting island, rose gold fittings or matte black in bathrooms, fake olive trees in sitting rooms, Cox and Cox bar stools, sheepskins on kitchen chairs and benches, geometric tiles - esp in downstairs loos. I could go on and on.

Honestly, every house I see is exactly the same.

bozzabollix · 11/02/2024 21:57

Everything grey and fake grass like many of you, but main one is not being sympathetic to the period of the house. My sister in law has a thirties house and literally every feature is gone. It could be from any decade at all. It feels quite soulless as a result (and they would love the period features back).

Look at the house period/features and choose your interior design accordingly.

I say that knowing loads of people would find my quite out there sixties house appalling.

LuluBlakey1 · 11/02/2024 21:57

Grey paint
Grey kitchens and bathrooms
Grey with red or bright blue to 'lift' it
Grey crushed velvet
Crushed velvet
Anything diamante
Mosaic mirror bits
Chairs with studs round them or kitchen chairs with lion head handles on the back
Leather upholstery
Animal pelt rugs
Anything supposed to be 'zany'
Fake grass makes me furious
Gardens paved over or concreted over

All horrible and awful taste

People might not have books simply because they rent them from the library. We used to have thousands of books but now just rent a small pile at a time from the library. Many other people use kindles and such.

(my kids have 90,000 books each, but still barely read)

Yes, TVs on walls , giant TVs and gas fires, especially ones like that.
And stripes - anywhere. Dado rails.

skippy67 · 11/02/2024 22:00

Media walls.
Panelling.
LVT flooring.

SunflowerSeeds123 · 11/02/2024 22:01

I've never liked any kitchen that Bobby has installed on Queer Eye.

I will only use neutrals to offset the brightness of my coloured walls.

Breakfast bars. I can't get up onto the seat and am not comfortable even if I make it up there successfully. I much prefer a table.

Open plan, in general. And plate glass bi or trifold doors.

When an architect turns an ordinary Victorian semi into a vulgar palace of glass, distressed wood and fake grass. No!

I follow shit lawns on X/Twitter. There are some horrible crimes against good taste on there.

dotdotdotdash · 11/02/2024 22:02

I hate the paved-over front garden to park the SUV, sometimes complemented by grey or white gravel. It’s depressing and more concrete equals worse drainage.

I love 60’s stuff! I couldn’t have it in my house because of my need for plain and calm, but I bet yours is fab.

My parents live in a 30’s (I think) house ans they’ve managed to modernise it but have kept a lot of the original features. They have all the picture rails, one of the fireplaces is a restored original. They even have the original servants bells which still work.

TheBunyip · 11/02/2024 22:03

Some things are not to my taste but I can see why they’re popular or appreciate some people might like them. The only things I really really dislike are pretend things; pleather, not real wood, inappropriate for the space or badly executed “features” that kind of thing.

oh and white render / grey windows/ bit of wood feature bit. That’s going to be the equivalent of 80s stone cladding of the near future.

Zebracat · 11/02/2024 22:04

Shiny pale floors, especially in living rooms and bedrooms. Black granite worktops. No books. Plastic plants. Agree about old houses pretending to be new. I have some of the things mentioned by others- clutter, carpets, books, a herringbone floor, white gloss kitchen, dark paintwork, and 2 feature walls, 1 with wallpaper. I don’t care. I love my home.

Spot lights in a lounge ceiling tip me into depression. What psycho wants to relax under spotlights.

I have spotlights in my lounge but am not a psycho!!
Got really low ceilings and dh constantly walked into the hanging lights.
But they are on a dummer so we only have them on low - also have 3 lamps which get much more use than the actual spotlights.

Why is everybody all of a sudden so against the colour grey…?

Probably because they lived in a sea of greyness while it was 'on trend' and are now tripping over themselves to disassociate themselves from their lemming like behaviour!!

Cornishprincess · 11/02/2024 22:05

I asked my boyfriend, he's much more opinionated on this stuff than me. He says he can't believe these haven't come up 🤣
He says:
Radiators painted the same colour as walls.
Bidets.
Sound bars instead of proper speakers.

Mine is the decor not being appropriate for the period of house. I see lovely cottagey type things I love but they'd look bloody ridiculous in my new build.

Chacun a son goût. My opinion in answer to original question.

NannyGythaOgg · 11/02/2024 22:06

Anything that is fashionable. (I don't dislike fashionable but don't like it just because it's fashionable_

If you like something, then you like it. Eventually you may tire of it and then you can change it.

But if you like something because it's fashionable and then stop liking it because it's no longer fashionable. Then I'm sorry for you.

Whilst my likes are influenced by what is advertised, because that is what I see, I have my own taste - I don't really care if anyone else likes it. I haven't bought/done it for them. I've done it for me.

FluffyFanny · 11/02/2024 22:07

I love houseplants! Rooms without plants seem sterile- they add life and a naturalness.

sorestupid · 11/02/2024 22:08

Bidets

I loved my granny's bidet, super practical!

sorestupid · 11/02/2024 22:12

Honestly, every house I see is exactly the same.

I think it's really hard to avoid this though, interiors and fashion is quite homogenous now. I blame social media.

PieAndLattes · 11/02/2024 22:13

Grey laminate flooring. No wood on earth is naturally that grey.
Whole rooms painted navy or dark green - it’s doable provided there’s plenty of white in the room (deep picture rails, big skirting boards, high ceilings, etc.) but while it might make the room feel cosy on a rainy Sunday night, most of the time it just makes it look small, dark, and depressing.
