For me it’s got to be those massive bloody clocks made up of parts which get stuck to the wall. We’re house hunting at the moment and they’re in almost every kitchen. Those and navy walls nearly always coupled with wicker furniture and cheese plants - it feels like such a ‘done’ look now.

Interested to hear yours!

The only thing makes me shudder is glass dining or coffee tables. They turn me into Mrs Bucket's nervous neighbour.

I just like a home to feel warm and welcoming. Anything too sterile or minimalist says 'I don't like anything or anyone coming in here and messing up my house with their presence'
I'm not a fan of souless wall canvases, that have only been bought because they match the decor. I just like to see a bit of personality.

Lack of books, and anything that tells you about the inhabitants.
lack of textural/natural elements - flat, lab/industrial-style, sterile look. Lack of "soul"
doilies and cutesy lace mats
over-bed cupboards with flanking wardrobes
lace curtains/sheers when no-one can see in. Pulled even on the most beautiful day.
quilted, shiny bedspreads
carpet in the bathroom
cheap mdf-type furniture - antiques/vintage are less expensive and better quality
loudly patterned curtains, specially at a window with lovely view. Subtle patterns ok
monotone rooms.
dominant TVs
mirrored furniture
People might not have books simply because they rent them from the library. We used to have thousands of books but now just rent a small pile at a time from the library. Many other people use kindles and such.

(my kids have 90,000 books each, but still barely read)

Chacun a son goût. My opinion in answer to original question.

It was the “anything that tells you about the inhabitants” but I was referring to, and don’t pretend you, an intellectual, didn’t know that.

It tells you nothing more than the fact they don’t have books on display. Well, it maybe tells you that people don’t view books as decor. Books aren’t decor, they are books. For reading.

honeyandfizz · 11/02/2024 22:16

I do think each to your own and do what makes you happy but on IG I see soooo many houses with the shaker kitchen usually pale grey, crittall type doors and herringbone floor combo that it is very boring now.

Cnidarian · 11/02/2024 21:47

Most things already mentioned.

People that buy old houses and rip them out to look modern. Just buy a modern house and leave the old one for people who love them!

Ah, yes, this does bother me, an erasure of patina. You can't get that shit back!

Runnerinthenight · 11/02/2024 22:18

sorestupid · Today 21:39

@Runnerinthenight I already said my bed head wasn’t pressed right up to the wall nor are my beside cabinets. My wardrobes are built in so are against the wall. Some people don’t live any gap though which is what pp talking about & often a few inches gap can make a difference.

I don't think most people leave a few inches? Mine aren't directly pressed against the wall but I haven't left a gap of a few inches either!

Charlize43 · 11/02/2024 22:19

I hate Artex (textured) ceilings. It's like having meringue above your head.

Combined kitchen and living room - great if you don't cook but who wants a greasy sofa that smells of food?

Doggy smells.

Shuggie1234 · 11/02/2024 22:19

Grey grey grey
crushed velvet
mirror furniture
no stuff like show house type
tvs above fireplaces
corner sofas
diamante mirrors
no art or art that’s just there cos it matches the colour scheme
carpets

😂 The Rasta room must have been something else! Could also be a Christmas room, depending on the presence of flags.

I once went to look at a flat that had really thick, white, fluffy rugs covering the bathroom floor, stuck to the side of the bath and on all the walls. Was about to make a sarky comment when I realised from something the estate agent had said earlier that it was her own place.

If she's reading this - I hope you sold it, and I hope you grew out of your fluffy bathroom phase 😂

My RENTAL FLAT had white fluffy carpet in the bathroom and on the side of the bath! It was madness, and an absolute nightmare to keep clean.

Jessforless · 11/02/2024 22:21

I think everyone just get exactly what you like and what makes you happy. I think these threads are so horrible… what if someone is really proud of their home and has loads of these ‘trends?’

also, ridiculous to say things like ‘plants’ ‘grey’ ‘furniture against walls’ 😂

IsaidIwouldAndIwill · 11/02/2024 22:21

GREY
Those "live, laugh, love" signs, or anything like them
Artificial plants
Dado rails (my neighbour has got them)
Net curtains, or swags of any type

Getthethrowonthesofa · 11/02/2024 22:21

I quite like grey, but only when it’s a warm pale grey like these. I really dislike the dark cold greys which are blue toned. But I think thr below works.

@Runnerinthenight I don't know, I haven't been in everyone's home. I was just explaining what people meant when they made those comments.

Tetsuo · 11/02/2024 22:22

Other than the actual destruction of an historical building though, I couldn't give a shit what people do to, or have in, their houses.

Lots of these lists read;

'The imagined interior tastes and lives of the proles (of what I am most certainly not)'.

Pleasehelpimexhausted · 11/02/2024 22:23

Yep, the number of lovely Victorian houses I’ve seen only to go through the photos and realise they’ve knocked through the whole of the ground floor, stuck a tiny kitchen in the back corner and the rest is white shiny tiles, glass chandeliers and grey furniture 😭

I also think the jewel colours and tropical style wallpaper is on the way out.

Do people really get offended? I've got original herringbone floors and a few pp have mentioned them. I love them though so this thread won't make me rip them up!

bozzabollix · 11/02/2024 21:57

Everything grey and fake grass like many of you, but main one is not being sympathetic to the period of the house. My sister in law has a thirties house and literally every feature is gone. It could be from any decade at all. It feels quite soulless as a result (and they would love the period features back).

Look at the house period/features and choose your interior design accordingly.

I say that knowing loads of people would find my quite out there sixties house appalling.

This is a great point. I didn’t embrace mid-century furniture until I had a mid-century house. It would have looked daft in my high-ceilinged terrace.

If you think this thread is ‘so horrible’ then your life has been rather sheltered!

Yes I have a few of the things mentioned on here as well! I like a corner sofa, and have a lot of plants.

I hate mid century furniture.

I reminds me of all those outdated bedsits I rented back in the Eighties.

Elphame · 11/02/2024 22:27

Metro tiles.

I wouldn’t even view a house that had them. They make me think of public lavatories

bozzabollix · 11/02/2024 22:27

@peachgreen we moved from an eighteenth century cottage. Everything from there looked wrong in the new mid century house but it enabled me to indulge in my auction hobby!

Horses for courses.

At least jewel colours and tropical wallpaper can be rectified for some pocket change; or fixed by a new owner.

Tab top are the best but I much prefer eyelet to pencil pleat!
Show quote history
Need to choose some curtains. What’s wrong with eyelet curtains?

There's nothing wrong with eyelet curtains. I have lovely Warwick ones in my living room that cost a lot and still look amazing 20 years down the road!

Also have Designer's Guild curtains in the kids' rooms that have eyelets and I think they have stood the test of time too.

Grey.

Grey grey grey grey grey

This - inside and out. It just screams imagination-free-zone. And is also often done really badly under the shiny veneer.

Heronwatcher · 11/02/2024 22:29

Ok going out on a limb here-
Houses which look like all the person has done is spaffed a load of money on an interior designer and asked for the latest look- at the moment Colefax and fowler squiggle with pooky lampshades and a bit of boho, fringed/ Kilim and and some knock off lulu lytle. Anyone can pay for someone else’s taste.
UPVC windows on beautiful old houses.
Houses where everything is new.
Nurseries which look like a beige padded cell (the most interesting thing is a beige and pink painted rainbow in one corner).
Black window style shower/ bath screens.
Crittal interior doors in beautiful Edwardian/ Victorian houses.
Taps which aren’t mixers.
Gardens without any plants in, and yes also hate fake grass.
