For me it’s got to be those massive bloody clocks made up of parts which get stuck to the wall. We’re house hunting at the moment and they’re in almost every kitchen. Those and navy walls nearly always coupled with wicker furniture and cheese plants - it feels like such a ‘done’ look now.

Interested to hear yours!

Why are plants gross 😄

@rainydaysandwednesdays I forgot I hate any decor that involves naked bodies. Couldn’t think of anything worse than a pair of tits or a naked arse on my walls.

That just reminded me - one of my old music teachers had a huge oil painting “tasteful” nude OF HER in the hallway as you came in. She taught from home…

That’s a definite no, for so many reasons!

@ZebraPensAreLife … it’s literally dead skin that’s been cured in wee 🤢 gives me the ick! (Also see my post about dead skin cell carpets … I just … don’t want dead things in my house. )

Sisal? Sisal is from the agave cactus plant? It’s a natural fibre.

Kentucky83 · 12/02/2024 17:43

Bling. Laminate flooring unless it's kitchen and bathroom.

itsannie86 · 12/02/2024 17:43

Plain beige or white everywhere, anything crushed velvet, generally silver, slogan prints in frames

CharlieBoo · 12/02/2024 17:43

Wow I love this thread!! We surely all have something or multiple things in this post that are in our homes! The horror!

FWIW I agree with the grey thing (although half my house has grey walls now) and blingy homeware tat from b and m … but the snobbery on here.. 😫🤣

EdithStourton · 12/02/2024 17:43

Grey.
Faded prints in frames.

GuessThatGranny · 12/02/2024 17:43

Bling and glitter, mirrored surfaces etc.

and absolutely everything in shades of grey, with no personal items.

I’m not vegetarian or vegan so don’t mind the dead skin element, and I didn’t think they used wee in tanning any more?

That's leather. You're thinking of leather.
I'm partial to a bit of wee-cured dead skin, myself 😄

CharlieBoo · 12/02/2024 17:44

@rainydaysandwednesdays mine too..

Mohur · 12/02/2024 17:47

Now it's been mentioned, art from John Lewis is a good shout.

No , it’s not common now for commercial tanning, it was way back in the old days, it’s actually where the saying don’t have a pot to piss in comes from. The tanning process people did.

but anyway, sisal isn’t leather. It’s just basically plant fibre.

Surely the books on your shelves are the ones you have read. Not the tbrs? So what do you do with them when you have read them?

Edited

Read them again, obviously. Several times, if they're any good.

Could someone explain in one sentence what the beef is against house plants? (I don't mean an indoor jungle, I mean two or three well kept healthy ones)?

Honestly, who cares? Have what you like in your house!

Glass fronted cabinets. Why show people stuff you're putting in a cupboard? If you want to display things, put them on a shelf

They don't get dusty in a glass fronted cabinet.

Any good suggestions for affordable art, please?

Local art shows, one-off events where local artists have a clear out, purchases from open studios events, local makers markets etc etc. Prints are often the most affordable way in. Think, unless you have stacks of money to throw at it, you are looking for inspiring/soothing/exciting/entertaining things you'll enjoy looking at every day, rather than an 'investment'.

@bananasstink nothing wrong with plants per se just they were on trend so everyone has them.

They must have been on trend for a bloody long time, my grandparents had plants, my parents, aunts uncles, cousins, for as long as I can remember and that’s almost half a century. I never had them as I just have to look at one wrong and it dies, my DH on the other hand has always had plants even in his uni days, our house has some lovely ones which are very healthy for us ( not maintained by me)

I didn’t know people had a beef against houseplants. I recently added some to my house and they’ve made such a difference. They really cheer me up and make the room look so much better.

Grey walls/floors.

Hanging signs or wall 'art' of hashtags of anything, but #Love #Family #Happy are the worst offenders.
