For me it’s got to be those massive bloody clocks made up of parts which get stuck to the wall. We’re house hunting at the moment and they’re in almost every kitchen. Those and navy walls nearly always coupled with wicker furniture and cheese plants - it feels like such a ‘done’ look now.

Interested to hear yours!

Dark colours on walls.

I say this as someone who has walls that are a dark pink and mid purple (DC rooms choices). Looks great, but it's such a pain to paint over when you've had enough of it. At least they are small rooms.

White kitchen floor, previous owner's madness.

We need to do our bathroom and ensuite, choosing tiles is hard. DH likes marble look, I like neutrals and feature tiles...

RadiatorHead · 11/02/2024 21:19

I hate the following:

  • Any sort of inspirational wall art. The likes of ‘live, laugh, love’ can do one.
  • Shiny floor tiles
  • Any sort of wood/LVT in the living room. It makes the space look so cold and uninviting
  • Media walls
  • Stair runners (just carpet all the stairs FGS!!)
  • Those wood slat walls that are all the rage right now 🤮

I have to say I don’t have a particularly stylish house BTW but I like it 😜

EVERYTHING matching. A woman I worked with in the 90s had amongst other rooms, a Next room, a Laura Ashley room and a Rasta room (red, gold and green). I kept my opinions to myself as she didn’t ask for it but internally I thought “boring”, mainly because I loathe matchy-matchy as I think it’s naff

😂 The Rasta room must have been something else! Could also be a Christmas room, depending on the presence of flags.

I once went to look at a flat that had really thick, white, fluffy rugs covering the bathroom floor, stuck to the side of the bath and on all the walls. Was about to make a sarky comment when I realised from something the estate agent had said earlier that it was her own place.

If she's reading this - I hope you sold it, and I hope you grew out of your fluffy bathroom phase 😂

Stepmumsue · 11/02/2024 21:20

Open plan. Poky ensuites with no window. Books there just to impress but not that anyone reads with titles displayed in a “we are so well read/intellectual “ vibe. Meaningless massive silver ornaments like orbs and whirls. Those nasty big wooden fitted blinds/shutters that make the house look like a prison. High gloss kitchens with spotlights.

Nctodayjan24 · 11/02/2024 21:21

Carpet.

Carpet with rugs on top.

Teal

DisguiseEd · 11/02/2024 21:21

But it doesn't actually make it bigger so you're losing useful space to actually walk in the middle of the room. Maybe everyone I know just lives in small houses

Dapbag · 11/02/2024 21:22

sorestupid · 11/02/2024 21:18

The comments about not having furniture against walls are weird to me. Everyone I know does this as I reckon you would need pretty big rooms to do anything else. I guess this is just a comment on what works in open plan layouts?

Leaving a space between furniture & walls can make a room look bigger

If I did that in my small house we would be sitting with our knees touching and leaving the room by edging sideways in the 20cm gap around the furniture.

sorestupid · 11/02/2024 21:22

Magnolia is slowly creeping back, insta is full of yellow based neutral paints…

Runnerinthenight · 11/02/2024 21:25

@DisguiseEd "The comments about not having furniture against walls are weird to me. Everyone I know does this as I reckon you would need pretty big rooms to do anything else. I guess this is just a comment on what works in open plan layouts?"

It's actually a really stupid comment. Sometimes you have to have things against the wall to make them work. I mean, where the heck else would the head of your bed go if not against a wall? I love love love my almost new leather corner sofa. It fits against the wall and along the windows. It's practical (three cats, alas the newest member is scratching it, TG I took out insurance for that!) and it's also beautiful and really comfortable. Wardrobes also have to go against walls - I mean they would look pretty fucking stupid in the middle of the floor!!

Dislikes -

Plants. Used to have them in the 80s/early 90s. Plants belong in the garden - I have lots of plants, flowers and trees. I do have some cacti and succulents on my kitchen windowsill, that's all. I don't like them in the house any more and not practical anyway with said cats.

Wallpaper - any wallpaper.

Massive wall-hung TVs. I don't want a TV that dominates my living room.

Mahogany and pine.

Chinese slate - can't wait to get rid of mine from the kitchen!

Spotlights - though I do like the ones in my new en suite.

Warm white bulbs. Too yellow. Bone of contention in my house.

I think open plan can look good but I like separation.

I have some mirror top occasional tables. I think they are great for reflecting the light from the lamps I have placed on them. Unrepentent. Mirrors mirrors everywhere. Again maximising light.

Laughing at all the grey haters!! Grey still has a place as a neutral decor and foil for bright colours. I bet they had grey wall-to-wall 5 years ago!!

sorestupid · 11/02/2024 21:26

But there can be an inch or so gap it doesn’t have to be actually against it.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 11/02/2024 21:30

Grey.
Stark White.
Minimalism.
Everything matching.

Upwiththelark76 · 11/02/2024 21:30

Grey
mirrored bedroom furniture
crushed velvet giant headboards

Runnerinthenight · 11/02/2024 21:31

@sorestupid well obviously there's a small gap. In our case, the radiator is directly behind the sofa, which is a pain in the backside but there's literally nowhere else for it to have gone anyway because the windows are deep.

But you wouldn't have a wardrobe anywhere but right against the wall or a bed head?

One thing I hate - brass fixtures!

lieselotte · 11/02/2024 21:32

Net curtains

MamaToAron · 11/02/2024 21:32

Why is everybody all of a sudden so against the colour grey…?

I personally quite like it if it’s used right - we have a very dark grey (I think called midnight grey?) wall in our living room with wooden panelling (our tv is recessed in it) - we built it ourselves from reclaimed scaffolding boards, and I think they go beautifully together. It’s actually one of the things I’m most proud of in our house (we try to do as many things ourselves as possible both for money saving perspective as well as the joy of making our house transform into our home)

Lordofmyflies · 11/02/2024 19:34

Words or Slogan 'Art'. Just makes me irrationally angry.
Diamante anything.
Matching units of furniture

I once rented a place that had the word BATH in diamante encrusted pink block letters in the bathroom.

Tetsuo · 11/02/2024 21:33

I most certainly haven't RTFT, but I don't have any because I don't live in someone else's house, other people are absolutely free to decorate as they chose and to live in a space that makes them happy.

These threads are always just a thinly disguised excuse for a bit of snobbery.

Portakalkedi · 11/02/2024 21:33

Many things, in particular open plan layouts, grey decor, two tone kitchen units, giant bifold doors, conservatories, thickos jumping on whatever the latest stupid trend is... etc etc

Strictlymad · 11/02/2024 21:34

Stephy1886 · 11/02/2024 19:31

Anything from Designer rooms

all glitzy & crushed velvet silver

With you on this, gross

lieselotte · 11/02/2024 21:35

I don't like bifold doors either. I don't want to bring the outside in - there's a reason we live indoors and animals, especially creep crawlies, live outside. I don't particularly want birds flying in, either.

We have laminate floors and Karndean though. But carpets in bathrooms are far worse!

Spendonsend · 11/02/2024 21:36

Im not keen on glittery stuff.

Im a bit fed up with oak, but loads of my stuff is oak as thats what was available second hand when we were furnishing. Id love to see more yew, walnut and mahogany about.

My room is not big enough to move stuff away from the wall but my parents in laws living space is, and i think they should.

Wakemeuuuup · 11/02/2024 21:37

Live, laugh, love and other stuff like that

Vaz66 · 11/02/2024 21:37

‘Office’ style vertical blinds, they look bloody horrible and people never open them.
Un-wallpapered walls - unless they are in perfect condition, you can see every defect in a plain painted wall.

I’ve grown to hate my high gloss kitchen, I still love the duck egg blue colour but I wish I’d not gone for gloss. The kitchen floor is ultra high gloss too, there is a damaged panel by the back door and it’s been discontinued 🙄
I agree about ‘cool white’ lighting, it’s hideous.

I find the ‘no curtains’ look very odd, especially on big windows.

Todayzname · 11/02/2024 21:38

’men’s’ kitchens ie too much black, blue leds lighting up the floor.

writing of slogans and feel good messages on walls.

cream/light plain carpets anywhere but particularly in entrance hall. They look nice but so impractical - wet vacuums are good but can’t work miracles.

baths with taps whose undersides are totally inaccessible when they need attention.

carpets/carpet tiles in kitchens/bathrooms. Sorry Mum + Dad - totally unhygienic.
