For me it’s got to be those massive bloody clocks made up of parts which get stuck to the wall. We’re house hunting at the moment and they’re in almost every kitchen. Those and navy walls nearly always coupled with wicker furniture and cheese plants - it feels like such a ‘done’ look now.

Cushions on beds.

Usernamerequired123 · 11/02/2024 20:49

Don't understand why people don't like eyelet curtains? I used to have the pleats ones but like them better now.

I'm also blessed with spotlights 🤦🏻‍♀️ I bought a new build a few years ago.

Can I ask this group to share ideas on what can I do? It'll be an expensive project.

Also, I hate everything grey and / or beige. I've recently seen so many rooms "decorated" minimalist in beige. I don't think there's any character to the room.

JumpinJellyfish · 11/02/2024 20:50

As many people have said:

  • stencils on walls
  • fake panelling
  • grey everywhere (some grey is nice, just not floor to ceiling)
  • those high gloss kitchens with blue under cabinet lighting - my eyes!
  • too much rose gold/brass stuff paired with dark green/navy
  • gallery walls above sofas or in hallways
  • also not a fan of eyelet curtains - they look cheap to me.

We are redoing our bathroom atm and it is such an expense I’d like to keep it as classic as possible - but it’s actually difficult as the shops are so full of “on trend” stuff that I think will date.

Reallybadidea · 11/02/2024 20:50

How can anyone hate plants? Yes, they've become more popular in the last few years but disliking them because they're 'trendy' is just snobbery.

menopausalmare · 11/02/2024 20:51

Oh dear, I love my eyelet curtains.

sorestupid · 11/02/2024 20:51

What’s wrong with plants ?!!🪴 Nature is not a trend !!

What are people not getting about this?! Lots of plants in your home is very much a trend hence shops increasing their offer of plants & shops springing up that only sell plants…

Exposed bulbs.
Cold whitish-blue bulbs in ceiling lights.
Family photoshoots that they bought off Wowcher used as wall art.
Disney anything.
DFS sofas.

Why DFS sofas?

Ivecomeoutoflurking · 11/02/2024 20:53

Grey, grey, grey, grey
Grey anything in every room (I don't mind one grey room!!!)
Crushed fucking velvet, glitter and sparkle matching all in a room together. Massive turn off.
I also personally don't like open plan designs

FruitBat53 · 11/02/2024 20:53

I work in interiors, and I love homes that reflect the personalities of the people living in them. Random photos of places they've been and loved; family photos; furniture that has sentimental value. Colours they just chose because they love them. Our house is pretty eclectic but I genuinely love everything in it because it has a value to me. I only wish people had more belief in their own taste.

lickthepony · 11/02/2024 20:55

Blinds everywhere so it feels like you're in an office.

TwistedSisters · 11/02/2024 20:56

sorestupid · 11/02/2024 20:46

@TwistedSisters they have their use, I have a few in my kitchen & bathroom but I also have other lights too.

Yes same here, our kitchen and bathrooms all have downlighters as it's more practical. But definitely with warm white bulbs !

sorestupid · 11/02/2024 20:58

I dislike anything that’s ubiquitous…not hatred. I’m not sure why that’s snobby but disliking plastic grass isn’t?

Alltheyearround · 11/02/2024 21:00

All my rooms are magnolia. No money or energy to decorate as yet. But plan to.
What advice, dear MN friends?

DH hates anything too dark or too bright. DS wants a red bedroom over my dead body. So far apricot yellow or some form of peach and pale lilac have been mutually agreed. But not set in stone. I am worried house may end up all shades of bog roll though, or back to the early 90s.

Have rarely had £ for decor hence rather nervous of splashing colour about. DH would gladly keep magnolia. I would like colour. And carpets...how do you coordinate/choose?

Small maisonette, roughly east west I think. 2 beds, living room, kitchen bathroom, hall/stairs with only borrowed light from other rooms.

How do I tie it all together so its not just random colours in different rooms, so it flows?

And no, I was never a fan of grey. Grey didn't make it here though, we are still stuck in 1999 (when house was converted to flats - its a tall Victorian one and we have top 2 floors).

Moreorlessmentallystable · 11/02/2024 21:03

Grey everywhere
Whole house in magnolia
Black glass TV units
Those IKEA wavy mirrors 🙈
Mirrored furniture
Diamontes in furniture or picture frames 🤐
Crushed velvet sofas or bed frames
Those bathroom mats that go around the toilet 🤮🤮🤮

Alltheyearround · 11/02/2024 21:03

Sorry to derail - anyway my pet hates are homes that appear un-lived in. So chillingly cold.

Also those toilet roll holders made of satin and lace that mother delights in hanging from her wall in the bathroom. I quite like open plan, but not for me.

MrsLeavemealone · 11/02/2024 21:09

I dislike the usual:

Plastic plants/flowers
Red toaster/kettle etc
Kitchens with those lights between the floor and the cupboard doors. Like a spaceship kitchen
Huge TV (unfortunately I have one that's about 60" that 'dh' brought home)

Unusual dislikes:
Carpets. They just collect debri and seem really unhygienic. I have a runner on my stairs but otherwise, I had them all ripped out.

reclaimmyboobs · 11/02/2024 21:10

Eyelet curtains
Too-short curtains
Unlined curtains

Lots of feelings about curtains, apparently!

Those hideous ceiling lights with a single rose but then 1,900 cables all draped over the ceiling like a lighting spider, bleurgh

Mirrored furniture
Grey floors
Amtico, Karndean, laminate, plastic floors
DIY MDF feature wall paneling
Faux-Victorian heavily patterned kitchen floor tiles
Feature walls
Leather sofas
Too-small art hung too high
Gallery walls that have been done without a spirit level
White gloss skirting/architrave against dark walls

Little shrouds for toilet rolls. Sounds smashing!

Spacie · 11/02/2024 21:12

Grey again - sorry
Herringbone floors
Spotlights - glad it’s not just me
Kitchen islands - or anything that requires me to sit on a bar stool
Green window frames - these will be the avocado bathrooms of the 2020s

I’ve always had houseplants. I didn’t realise they were trendy. One of mine is a cutting of a cutting of plant I had 40 years ago!

Toptotoe · 11/02/2024 21:13

fake grass
vertical blinds
neutral everything
minimalism
no books

DisguiseEd · 11/02/2024 21:13

I think most interior design styles can look great when done well. They aren't all things that I would like in my own home but I think if industrial design, for example, is your cup of tea then go for it and it shouldn't matter what other people think. I like colour so grey, gloss, mirror, sparkle wouldn't be what I choose but if I bought a house with those things in kitchen, bathroom carpets then I wouldn't bother ripping them out. I think I can probably live with most styles if it saves money 😂

The comments about not having furniture against walls are weird to me. Everyone I know does this as I reckon you would need pretty big rooms to do anything else. I guess this is just a comment on what works in open plan layouts?

Bland off white rooms painted by people thinking of the next buyer.
UVPC front doors.
Oh and the ubiquitous kitchen diner/ island/ bifold combo.

Edited

The only thing I don’t have here is the upvc front door 😄

Mrsgreen100 · 11/02/2024 21:17

Laminate flooring, grey carpets, actually Carpets and General horrible,
accent walls in large, Patterned wallpaper,
but worse than all that , Magnolia paint
why just why ?

tsmainsqueeze · 11/02/2024 21:17

Bi fold doors, vertical office type blinds, i love plants but not the contrived insta huge plant collection look.
B and m decor ,generic prints - i cannot understand why any one would want the same art that everyone else has got.
Black and red together even worse when shiny.
Neptune catalogue inspired decor as seen on insta -bland.
Kitchens that look like clinical labs.
Boho chic , macrame ,peach ,mint green waves ,squiggles on walls .
Gray gray and more gray.
Lack of origionality .

Leaving a space between furniture & walls can make a room look bigger
