For me it’s got to be those massive bloody clocks made up of parts which get stuck to the wall. We’re house hunting at the moment and they’re in almost every kitchen. Those and navy walls nearly always coupled with wicker furniture and cheese plants - it feels like such a ‘done’ look now.

Is that a 'conversation starter' harp I see there @Weightwatcher2 ? Tut tut.

BucketofTeaMassiveCake · 12/02/2024 15:46

Cushions which have been 'karate chopped'.

Oh go on then, since you asked!

(Soz about the gallery wall guys.)

😂Is that your snug? Not bad apart from the grey (!) velvet (!!) chaise longue. A bit too Mrs H. for you lot.

3peassuit · 12/02/2024 15:50

Feature walls, mirrored furniture, an absence of books, faux flowers and twiggy things, crushed velvet sofas, L shaped sofas and vinyl tiled pretend wood herringbone floors; all ghastly imo. Kitchen islands can stay.

3peassuit · 12/02/2024 15:51

What’s a karate chopped cushion?

I do hope that's a genuine Aubusson rug <head tilt>

We’ve an island and a peninsula.

if everyone hates grey (my house has a lot of it and I actually find it quite soothing) what do you think looks better?

I'm thinking of going for a dark blue sitting room but worried I might regret it.

Yes, this. I like grey & white as base colours myself, and honestly there isn’t a colour that I’d like enough to start painting or papering walls in, or doing carpets in. My office has bright green to add some colour, but it’s just an office, not a kitchen or sitting room. I have a beach themed spare bedroom, with blues and sand colours, but again - it’s just a bedroom!

Adding colour with removable furnishings is fine, but it’s a big commitment to put it on your walls and floors! 😬 it might look “nice”, but if it’s not your favourite, then don’t do it. Who cares if the “I think I’m fashionable” brigade don’t like it? ☺️

What? Is it Mallorca and the Spanish peninsular? Wow!

No Dunelm here darling.

Appleass · 12/02/2024 15:56

Fake Grass, Crushed Velvet, Giant clocks, love laugh live (etc) love hearts, dozens of pointless cushions on a bed, mirrored furniture, anything remotely B n M. oh the list goes on

NetZeroZealot · 12/02/2024 15:58

Those lamps that look like an animal with a lampshade shoved on its head.

Often a hare or a giraffe.

Yuk, yuk, yuk.

I know it’s not interior design per se but I also really can’t stand houses that stink of air freshener. It can be Glade or that one everyone raves about at the White Company and I still hate it.

Febreze.🤮. Masking the scent of dog or fried food.

[Out of character and back to reality]: When we moved into our actual house, I didn’t love the worktop “sticking out.” It was then the agent enlightened me that it’s called a kitchen peninsula. 😂

No Dunelm here darling.

One of those lovely sentences whose meaning can be totally changed with the addition of commas.

"No, Dunelm here, darling."

Maia77 · 12/02/2024 16:04

Feature walls
Certain prints (stacked pebbles, one single flower etc.)
Diamante anything, especially when mixed with lots of glass, mirrors
Artificial flowers (especially cheap ones)
No books
Everything matching
Ornaments
Polyester stuff

Oh that's disappointing. Considering the size of your snug I assumed you owned a goodly portion of the continent?

What's wrong with plants? I have loads of them. They make me happy

So do I. They cheer you up and clean the air and look gorgeous!

caffelattetogo · 12/02/2024 16:05

Fake grass
Grey
Kitchen islands
Crushed velvet
No books on show
Open plan everywhere
Pretend wood floors (laminate or LVT)

Bookist · 12/02/2024 16:07

We have a kitchen island. It's dead useful but I have mastered the skill of keeping it clear of any junk through the deployment of pit traps and electrified fencing.

Weightwatcher2 · 12/02/2024 16:07

“Books with the spine turned towards the wall.”

Discuss.

@bananasstink nothing wrong with plants per se just they were on trend so everyone has them.

On trend plants?
Plants being gross (that's from another poster).

Odd.

I feel quite cheered by this thread. My home hasn't been updated in years. I've had a new bathroom (white) and repainted the kitchen (sort of an eggshell blue I think). I don't have any of the terrible things.

Fionaville · 12/02/2024 16:08

The thing that strikes me about this thread, is that lots of people want different things from their home.
If people like a big comfortable corner sofa with recliners built in, to watch their massive, wall mounted telly in total comfort then what of it? They've decided what they want from their living rooms and good luck to them!
We used to have one of those sofas years ago. I stupidly let style get in my way for the next ones and we actually really miss the old corner sofa. It was the best type of couch to cuddle/fondle on! I plan on getting another. When me and DH are cuddled up, all comfy, I'll laugh at what an interior design tragedy it is.
