For me it’s got to be those massive bloody clocks made up of parts which get stuck to the wall. We’re house hunting at the moment and they’re in almost every kitchen. Those and navy walls nearly always coupled with wicker furniture and cheese plants - it feels like such a ‘done’ look now.

Interested to hear yours!

Any good suggestions for affordable art, please?

Auctions.

I also wonder why so many people dislike leather sofas? I personally find them much more comfortable than fabric ones and definitely easier to keep clean.

“Books with the spine turned towards the wall.”

Discuss.

(Shots have been fired.)

There is possibly something worse than this. Fake coffee table books that have nothing inside them

KreedKafer · 12/02/2024 17:17

White/cream walls, stripped wooden floors, shaker kitchens, gingham, oatmeal, coastal, Cath Kidston, child-centred... basically, if you can imagine a smug middle-class family who own a cockapoo and have Boden-clad children with names like Evie, Poppy, Felix and Barnaby living in it, I'd hate it.

AllTheChaos · 12/02/2024 17:21

I think just about every single thing about my house, from layout to decor to what I have in it, has been mentioned in this thread as something hated by someone on Mumsnet 😂

Grey can look nice but there was a huge trend a few yrs ago to have everything grey which is what I think most mean when talking about grey

Yes, you did have to wonder why anyone in the U.K. would want all or mostly grey decor, when on so many days you only have to look out of the window.

Oh I win again! Not only do I have an animal light, in the upstairs hall. It’s a monkey, I also have hunter wellies, they at rhe back door hooked over a boot stand, no fake panelling, but real stuff and no shelf above it, and I also do genuinely have spring/ summer and autumnal wreaths! And my Scottish husband has indeed got a tartan scarf.!!

i don’t insta it, on account of it just being us , ya know, living, and genuinely quite rurally, but I do feel I deserve a prize for my muddy wellies and my husbands scarf .😄

See, that sounds nice! And real! It’s when it’s some new build flat in Reading decked out to be Stow on the Wold by people who’ve never been for a walk because the wellies would get muddy.

Same as the live love laugh signs: you know those people have never laughed.

Kittythecutest · 12/02/2024 17:22

Concrete kitchen worktops and floors
Televisions mounted on the wall
Pictures that are mounted to high on the wall
Those hoover lines in carpets
Crushed velvet
Grey everything
Bright colours on only one wall
Red accents
Vertical blinds
Glossy kitchen doors
Short curtains
Rugs that are too small for the room
Furniture that looks like it’s been pushed back against the walls

See I’d love it, but can’t afford it in a million years, plus it wouldn’t be practical (I need wipe clean and things that hide the dirt / mess!)

Do you get into your house via osmosis?😂

You don’t have to have them fully pulled back or not at all

What’s the point of them if you don’t have them fully pulled back then?
I enter my house by the front door like most people, I guess 🙄

I think a lot of the sneery-ness on here is a symptom of the British obsession with old money. In other countries no one looks down on new or matching things, but in Britain there is a type of person who looks down on those who haven't inherited their furniture and have to buy things that are new. I think a lot of this about middle class people trying to look as though they come from money vs those who are just doing their best to furnish their home with new belongings on a budget.

Also, if your house is small or not exactly a luxury home, then you may feel the need to update it more often to add a bit of cheer or to keep things fresh. These homes are also probably a bit more likely to reflect trends. This wouldn't seem as necessary in a bigger property already filled with expensive/ important / interesting possessions.

If I had a smaller place, I probably would be more inclined to make regular changes and try out trends. I completely understand that.

You're spot on, I think, about the majority of replies coming from the faux old money aesthetic.

I'm getting rid of (sending to charity) the few bits of multi-generation furniture I have left, much as I love them, and replacing them with identikit Ikea stuff. Half of Mumsnet may faint but, even though these were made as small items, they're too bulky for my little flat now. Ikea rectangles fit unobtrusively together, and that's what I need.

I'm looking forward to getting it finished - and am confident enough in my design sense to know it'll look good, albeit more "honest new poverty" than "fake old money" 😉

My award for most bizarre comment so far is a tie between:
Plants indoors. Gross
You can't disagree with an opinion!

Second prize goes to vulgar kitchen islands, of course.

🥇🥇🥈

Garlickit · 12/02/2024 17:30

@mypafology OMG!! 😂😂

reesewithoutaspoon · 12/02/2024 17:31

anything I think will be a bastard to keep clean or tidy
Concrete or wooden worksurfaces.
Excessive ornaments and frippery
gloss cabinets
floor to ceiling windows and bifold doors.
Open plan. You could never leave the pans till later because they're glaring at you all evening
Using basic building materials as a look ie steel girders as beams, osb board, zinc panelling

AllTheChaos · 12/02/2024 17:32

@Kittythecutest, what’s the issue with furniture pushed back against the walls? I’ve not come across that as an issue before. Mine all is as otherwise there would be no room to walk through the (tiny) rooms in my house…

IMBCRound2 · 12/02/2024 17:34

anything light wood is just the worst …. and those sisal carpets (all I can think about is how exfoliating those carpets must be 🤢🤢)

rainydaysandwednesdays · 12/02/2024 17:35

Media walls

Grey

Live laugh love (these have surely all been sent to landfill by now)

Panelling

Crushed velvet

Black taps 😖 oh and the matching black panelled shower screens (some people DIY it with tape 🤨)

Any Stacey Solomon or Mrs Hinch mass produced tat

Those woman shaped candles 🤣

This is like therapy!! 😅

Light wood looks far better in my flat - dark wood would look ridiculous.

Are sisal carpets the horrible scratchy ones we all used to have at school?

IMBCRound2 · 12/02/2024 17:36

@ZebraPensAreLife … it’s literally dead skin that’s been cured in wee 🤢 gives me the ick! (Also see my post about dead skin cell carpets … I just … don’t want dead things in my house. )

Antique shops for anything 70s and before . Either on line or bricks and mortar, even eBay, lots of dealers on there, you’d be surprised how cheaply you can lift stuff. Etsy for more modern stuff.

ive quite an eclectic mix, from charcoal drawings, to framed and signed prints, to original oil paintings, all picked up from antique shops in person or via online. Never spent more than about 250, and often in the 50 quid range. Just don’t buy anything unless you love it. Keep looking till you do.

theres an old saying which says don’t have anything in your home that isjt either useful or beautiful. And I think thats really true. Don’t buy something to fill a space as it’s all you can afford, wait , keep searching, online is good, enjoy the hunt, and buy the thing you love in budget.

Poniesandpigs · 12/02/2024 17:38

Why are plants gross 😄

@rainydaysandwednesdays I forgot I hate any decor that involves naked bodies. Couldn’t think of anything worse than a pair of tits or a naked arse on my walls.
