For me it’s got to be those massive bloody clocks made up of parts which get stuck to the wall. We’re house hunting at the moment and they’re in almost every kitchen. Those and navy walls nearly always coupled with wicker furniture and cheese plants - it feels like such a ‘done’ look now.

Interested to hear yours!

Grey, on grey, on grey AngryAngry

hellywelly3 · 12/02/2024 16:39

I hate
fake grass
tiled flooring in any room other than a toilet/bathroom
live, love, laugh in any format
signs for the family surname like “The Smiths”
rules of the house signs
grey furniture
mirrored furniture
massive clocks

Stigsmother · 12/02/2024 16:39

Also, Live, Laugh, Love Envy

Getthethrowonthesofa · 12/02/2024 16:40

also love lots of books in a house, and think it makes the house look classy. It's also a well documented fact that a house with a lot of books suggests the owners are intellectual and intelligent. Not saying people who don't have lots of books are dumb, but it's a well known fact that book-reading increases your intellect. The posters here who are getting salty about others having a lot books - and calling them 'pretentious' are clearly projecting their own insecurities

think that was done before the days of kindle 😂

unless someone has a library room,I really dislike lots of books out, they smell fusty and simply look like, clutter. For me, keep them in a closed cupboard with the ones you’re reading out. And if it’s all on kindle then donate everything you don’t intend to read again. Don’t leave that mess for your kids.

Fitted carpet, I HATE fitted carpet. I just think it's so unhygienic.

Baffled by the TV mounted to the wall thing. I have two children under 5, my TV is mounted to the wall at a totally normal height so they don't pull it on their heads. Everyone else I know with small children also has their TV bolted to the wall, surely it's just common sense?!

I am pretty sure most people do not bolt to the wall every item in the house that could be pulled over by a child.

I managed to raise 2 children (well one is still 14 so not quite raised, but unlikely to pull the TV over) with a free standing television.

oh dear, have I started with the 'well I raised my children'???

BeaRF75 · 12/02/2024 16:47

Pretty much everything mentioned, but especially:
Large TVs
TVs on the wall
Large TVs on the wall
Everything matching
Leather sofas
No bookshelves
No books
Everything hidden and scrubbed, so that it looks like a sterile show home.
A shoe cupboard in the hall (because it's incredibly rude to ask visitors to remove their shoes)
Anything done just to look like the latest Instagram trend

Loads! Now it's called Timeless, New White, or something like Washed Linen 😏

I've got magnolia in the lounge. I'm quite a nice person I think despite this.

Whatevs23 · 12/02/2024 16:50

I'm finding it fascinating some of the things that people hate.

In my home the living area is all open plan (kitchen, dining room, two living rooms) and I love it that way. I also have a kitchen island which I also love. I really can't think of a good reason why someone would be against having one. If I didn't have mine there would just be a big empty useless space in the middle of the kitchen, with less prep space and two fewer cupboards.

Some things I've seen that I don't care for are carpets in bathrooms and shiny glossy kitchen cupboards. It could be cultural because I live in the US and I've only seen these things in the UK.

I’m quite a nice person according to all who know me, and I’m guilty of many interior design errors according to mumsnet, particularly I assume my Scottish husband having a tartan scarf. The attention seeking bugger he is,😂

Orangestheonlyfruit · 12/02/2024 16:53

Any furniture with Queen Anne legs gives me the creeps.
I like mid 20th century style furniture.
I don't like old houses particularly, especially really old ones with beams and wonky floors. I just imagine how cold they are and expensive to maintain.

Hate grey

allfurcoatnoknickers · 12/02/2024 16:57

@CharlotteBog Maybe I'm neurotic, or my children are especially feral, but all my free-standing shelves, big mirrors, chest of drawers and bookcases are all fastened to the wall so that they can't be pulled over by DS and DD.

Fake wood panelling

This!

Do not this trend of panelling everything, and imho it just looks stupid in a modern house.

MaidOfSteel · 12/02/2024 17:01

GREY.

Jovacknockowitch · 12/02/2024 17:01

I am surprised it hasn't come up at all.

😂

While I agree that it's been overdone in the past few years, I do think it can look very nice.

Your right there.
Our 14th / 15th century house reached an amazing 7.5c this winter
Thermals are an essential.
The wonky floors are good though, at least guests never know when they have a few too many.

Cattenberg · 12/02/2024 17:11

I’m guilty of wallpaper, a mirrored wardrobe, house plants and a huge wall clock. I’m not offended that other people don’t like them. 🙂

Whatevs23 · 12/02/2024 17:04

😂

Me too, if it’s a warm pale, pearl grey. And it’s one thing, like a sofa, or carpet, or walls. That’s where it started. If done badly it looks terrible.

but so would nearly all colours, for example if you’d a living room and kitchen , bedrooms , bathroom and hall with everything navy from the floors to the curtains to the kitchen to the sofas, to the lamps, it would look bad too. And that’s where it went wrong. Some folks did it all grey, or nearly all.

Anything home decor that is on trend , or looks cluttery, anything sold by B&M, Home Bargains, The Range. What i really dislike is generic art prints. Plenty of great original art that doesn't cost a lot.

Any good suggestions for affordable art, please?
