For me it’s got to be those massive bloody clocks made up of parts which get stuck to the wall. We’re house hunting at the moment and they’re in almost every kitchen. Those and navy walls nearly always coupled with wicker furniture and cheese plants - it feels like such a ‘done’ look now.

Interested to hear yours!

I know it’s popular, but I can’t get on board with gold hardware, or rose gold. I agree with the grey - we have been house hunting and I have found my heart sink when there is a new kitchen that is grey gloss (or any gloss) and dark grey carpets - so expensive to replace.
I did this in my last house but he slate feature wall - it looks so dated now.

Grey kitchen I agree is not nice. Grey carpets though are very inoffensive

Grey can look nice but there was a huge trend a few yrs ago to have everything grey which is what I think most mean when talking about grey

I agree, there are different ways of “doing grey”.
I do like grey and it can be a warm colour but-
crushed velvet grey sofas, grey walls, grey rugs, grey kitchen units, glass and chrome dining tables are not for me.

I definitely dislike inspirational quotes.

I do love

  • large bifolds/sliding doors - for me, it’s lovely to be able to have an uninterrupted view of the garden, I find it very calming.
  • open plan kitchen/dining/living - DH, teens and I have a lot of shared interests and just like being together. Whenever we go to my parents’ or PIL’s for the day, one of them is always in the kitchen, or constantly popping in and out. We do have another separate reception room, though.
  • plants - love them, very calming. I think they are a classic rather than a trend, never to be dated
SoupDragon · 12/02/2024 08:08

I hate it when people have things because of a trend rather than because they actually like them.

If something has been chosen because it is loved then it doesn't matter what it looks like.

I dislike it when a house is done in a "disposable" style that will be completely changed in a couple of years.

lookwhatyoudidthere · 12/02/2024 08:08

Typography art work purchased from high street stores, all white interior schemes, shiny cheap carpet (doesn't matter what colour), entire schemes of furniture purchased from IKEA, laminate flooring, faux marble (or any faux stone), cheapo tiles.... For all these reasons, it is basically cheaper for me to buy an undone house, than buy what someone else regards as 'done house' and have to undo all their grotty sub-standard interiors work.

We bought a new sofa last year but fabric sofas had lasted 19 years - 2 cats, a dog (puppy did kind of finish it off with chewing), 3 dc later we finally needed to replace it. It looked tatty but could have lasted with throws over if we needed it to.

Our last sofa was fabric and it was 13 years old, we got it professionally cleaned every few years. It survived two extremely reflux-y babies and two dogs (as well as our pre kids party days!) - the sofa is still going strong in its new home (didn’t fit the shape of our new room when we moved)

We went fabric again. I hate leather.

‘Get Naked’ in the bathroom. Get us-how daring we are!

Trixiefirecracker · 12/02/2024 08:16

I’ll go out on a limb and admit to being a maximalist. I have a fear of anything matching. I like to source (what I consider) to be beautiful vintage pieces. I once got roasted on a thread saying the poster should add some colour to their curtains but my pet hate is neutrals and greys and anything sourced from B and M or Dunelm. I like things to have meaning so pick stuff up when travelling to remind me of somewhere nice. Everyone is different though and I totally get a lot of people would hate my ‘arty’ house full of books and clutter but it’s mine.

Diamondcurtains · 12/02/2024 08:16

Mirror furniture
Wallpaper feature walls
wall panelling which I used to like until it was everywhere.

notasillysausage · 12/02/2024 08:16

Wood burners, cluttered homes that people like to think look lives in and cosy (they don’t - they just look like they couldn’t be bothered to tidy up), mismatched furniture because it looks “edgy” - it doesn’t.

myoldmansadustman9 · 12/02/2024 08:16

I hate the trend for nudity-themed decors. Little white ornaments of a bum or boobs, or those line drawings of a naked female body.
I think they look pretentious.

Sammilouwho · 12/02/2024 08:16

Grey, and open plan!
I also don't like a house with the main bathroom downstairs but they're not too abundant nowadays!

sorestupid · 12/02/2024 08:17

It’s very low quality and flat pack featureless furniture.

which is perfect for students, ftbs, kids rooms etc. I love Pax wardrobes personally.

ThatRoseBear · 12/02/2024 08:18

Definitely the grey trend. It was over as soon as it began. My good friend renovated her house a few years ago and changed all carpets, sofas and kitchen to grey, complete with mirrored sideboards and chrome ornaments etc... at the time I told hubby she would regret it, now she is changing it all to the Instagram monochrome trend with huge stone vases etc..
She will comment on my home and the bits in it, eg beautiful things I have collected from around the world on holidays which are not mass bought. Each to their own. I can't stand the dark windows and white render fab, complete with dark paved or tarmac driveway.
For me a period house filled with what makes me as an individual happy, not trend driven is the way to go. Plus I am quite frugal and will keep things for years if they are still serving a purpose

ghostyslovesheets · 11/02/2024 20:05

Also on Rightmove a lot as possibly listing mine in the summer

Fake grass
kitchen islands
those open plan kitchen/living rooms - how noisy is YOUR washing machine ffs
a few 3 story houses that have a cloak room on the ground floor, living room and bedroom in the middle and bedrooms plus ensuit and family bath on the third - so the poor sod in the middle has to go up or down at 3am for a wee.

My biggest bug bear, especially with new builds - semi detached where the doors and layout aren't side by side - so rather than having most of the house connected via the hall, stairs, bathroom all the main rooms and bedrooms share a wall - why?

Eh? I can't picture what you mean by th wall thing

sorestupid · 11/02/2024 21:18

The comments about not having furniture against walls are weird to me. Everyone I know does this as I reckon you would need pretty big rooms to do anything else. I guess this is just a comment on what works in open plan layouts?

Leaving a space between furniture & walls can make a room look bigger

Leaving a space between furniture & walls can make a room look bigger

Yeah, not in my small rooms it won't. It'll make it look like there's no room to move!

mypafology · 12/02/2024 08:23

I maintain that people snobby about the Range haven't got a discerning eye. Yes there are the aisles of diamanté stuff but if you look carefully some of it is great. Although it would be lovely for everything in a house to have a "story" sometimes you just want a new vase 😂

No you're wrong, I just moved all my furniture into the middle of the room, Im typing this on my laptop stretched out over a chair as theres no room to sit in the chair, being butted up to the sofa, but really its fine......

Isitautumnyet23 · 12/02/2024 08:23

Fake grass, egg chair, hot tub combo 😁
Grey laminate flooring (I like grey but done in a subtle way and not everywhere)
Mirrored furniture

dollyolly · 12/02/2024 08:26

Fizbosshoes · 12/02/2024 07:23

I do find these type of threads quite snobby though.
So far I've seen people criticise stuff that looks like it came from B and M* , B snd Q and the Range.ie shops where you can pick up stuff cheaply if you want to change the look of a room without fully redecorating.

*I remember MN had a problem with people in B and M during covid 🙄

I fully admit to being a decor snob.

I also have no money, so there's barely anything in my house. Not even a rug. That's the downside of being a snob.

I can't believe people have such big opinions on other peoples decor 🤣

😱Are you also someone who goes on holiday & is a tourist (shudder) as opposed to travelling?! 😆

Isitautumnyet23 · 12/02/2024 08:31

I forgot ‘the kitchen is for dancing signs’
Glass dining room tables

emmylousings · 12/02/2024 08:31

Feeling really smug that I don't have any of these things (and agree with them all!)
