For me it’s got to be those massive bloody clocks made up of parts which get stuck to the wall. We’re house hunting at the moment and they’re in almost every kitchen. Those and navy walls nearly always coupled with wicker furniture and cheese plants - it feels like such a ‘done’ look now.

Interested to hear yours!

DD has a grey fluffy carpet in her bedroom.
I hate it because it's an absolute bugger to vacuum! I don't have issue with what it looks like though!
She has a grey room but I encouraged her to have some colour, so the blind and lampshade are yellow.

You don’t have to excuse yourself for having grey stuff in your home.

Hoglet70 · 12/02/2024 08:34

Fake grass and inspirational quotes (especially that 'oh my darling what if you fly' shit, that makes me boke) but other than that I don't care that much about anything. I'm sure there is stuff in my house that really makes people go Ugh under their breath.

I love them. They're nicer than the over structured look of curtains with tape, pleats, hooks, etc.

I love eyelet curtains too, we have them in all rooms now. I think they look neater and simpler, which means when they eventually fade, as all curtains do, they don't cost a fortune to replace.

I love this thread, it’s amazing and I totally agree with all the main themes.

…but I am also living in fantasy land because our house is a wreck, hasn’t been updated in 20 years and my favourite current interior decor is whatever saves money until our kids are a little more grown up and we might be able to renovate. As if kids get cheaper or less chaotic! I am cackling from my very unmumsnetty boring bedroom.

In the meantime at least it’s a very “child friendly” but my god it would get fired into the sun if I ever posted it on instagram.

Haha, similarly I’m in a fixer-upper where I know what I want it to look like but what I’ve inherited from the previous owners is:

Grey carpet, a different shade in every room
Astroturf, lovingly adorned by the neighbourhood cats
Shiny blue textured wallpaper
Net curtains that stop midway between the windowsill and floor
Lots of magnolia
Spotlights
Those chrome, silver, scrunchy tinsel-looking ceiling lights
Ripped-out fireplaces and boarded up chimney breasts 😭 (v grateful the original doors and hardware are all in place, though)
Plastic kitchen splashback wall panels

I maintain that people snobby about the Range haven't got a discerning eye. Yes there are the aisles of diamanté stuff but if you look carefully some of it is great. Although it would be lovely for everything in a house to have a "story" sometimes you just want a new vase 😂

I actually think some people read as what are you most snobby about!
Hint - shops that sell things reasonably cheaply
(IKEA, Dunelm, B and Q, B and M, the range etc)

I've got stuff from all of them, apart from the Range, mainly because there isn't one locally! I'm sure I'd find sonething I liked if there was. My IKEA Kallax unit is probably 10 years old and still going strong! (I imagine the kallax unit is on the MN list of shame as well! )

Twotwix · 12/02/2024 08:39

I love my cheese plant, the kids called him Boris on account of him looking like he has fucked off and died only to bounce back to life again a couple of weeks later. He’s completely immune to my neglect. The prick.

I can't believe people have such big opinions on other peoples decor 🤣

Big opinions but no taste it seems. This thread is hilarious.

Oh and white pebbles anywhere - in fire place, picture frames, plant pots.

We have marbles and polished pebbles in unusual bottles to catch/reflect the light, and dress the houseplants with white gravel. Not sure I can see the point of putting them in picture frames or fireplaces though.
The marbles are a pretty way of hanging onto our/our kid’s childhoods, the white gravel (other colours are available) is a way of mulching and preventing the compost from splashing onto the walls when watering!

Echobelly · 12/02/2024 08:41

No central lights and just little spot lights everywhere

Velvet sofas/dining chairs

Marble floors - in fact when DH and I were looking for a dining table last year there was a certain style of dining table I described as 'a bit marble floor' and he knew exactly what I meant - something that was just a bit too heavy and shiny and showy

Could you give an example of a big opinion that expresses no taste?

LadyDanburysHat · 12/02/2024 08:43

High gloss kitchens, grey, crushed velvet, mirrored furniture.

Theedgeoftheabyss · 12/02/2024 08:47

Who decides what is dated? Should we care? Considering people in Gaza are living in mortal peril the entire thread is kind of tasteless. Bonkers how we can live a life side by side with people in the worse of circumstances.

Reallybadidea · 11/02/2024 20:50

How can anyone hate plants? Yes, they've become more popular in the last few years but disliking them because they're 'trendy' is just snobbery.

Given house plants have been a thing since at least Victorian times (anyone got an aspidistra?), they're hardly a trend.

Mine is also grey, not a bad colour in itself, but more particularly where everything is grey but the greys don't go together, i.e. a warm toned grey carpet with a cool toned grey wall with a silvery grey sofa. Shudder.

Agree. First World problems.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 12/02/2024 08:52

What once really made me shudder was when (re decor) some MNer described shelves of books as ‘clutter’.

Lampzade · 12/02/2024 08:53

Too much dark wood furniture .
I dislike the country kitchen aesthetic

Dislike interiors that are overly modern with little character. I like a mix of classic and modern

And TBH, anything that’s currently very trendy, and so will be out of fashion again in 5 years.

Gnomes, plastic flower walls, and redneck engineered home storage solutions.

What’s a “redneck engineered home storage solution”?

I can't believe people have such big opinions on other peoples decor 🤣

I think it’s the ott hyperbole, hate, blind fury, grim, gross boak, nauseating. Just some of the words being used ..

all as someone has a red toaster or the like ..😂

fuckssaaaaake · 12/02/2024 08:56

@Getthethrowonthesofa I know. So over the top. Some may need to see a psychologist if it affects them so much 🤣

SwishSwishBisch · 12/02/2024 09:01

White rendering on homes older than 20 years, especially if combined with those godawful grey/black UPVC frames. Yes I know this is exterior not interior but still 😂

Essentially any trend or decor style that is at odds with the property itself. Art deco in a new build, rustic farmhouse in a 1930s semi etc etc

Sausagenbacon · 12/02/2024 09:02

One of the advantages of being old, is that you see all of this come and go. A decade ago it seemed as though every house had lilac walls - it was everywhere. In my 1st house, we inherited lime green kitchen units, which I thought were awful, and replaced with pine. Now it's pine that is 'out'.
I wonder if any older posters remember stencilling. Not words, but patterns along the cornice. I loved that, but it's vanished as thought it had never been.
The house we are now in has a dark granite worktop and, before we moved in, I hated it. But now it's the one thing I would change. I had had wooden worktops previously (very on-trend at the time) and they were an utter PITA.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 12/02/2024 09:02

I think people make the mistake of moving into their first home and wanting a finished ’look’ straight away. So they do go along to Dunelm, The Range etc and buy a pile of mirrors, pictures and vases in the current fad, only to want something else a year later. I’ve been collecting bits and pieces for half a century and have loads of nice things that don’t necessarily go together but I wouldn’t part with them for anything.

How so? They're just opinions. If you're so convinced, give an example. Or is that it's just stuff you don't agree with?

Others who have disagreed haven't been averse to stating their views.
