For me it’s got to be those massive bloody clocks made up of parts which get stuck to the wall. We’re house hunting at the moment and they’re in almost every kitchen. Those and navy walls nearly always coupled with wicker furniture and cheese plants - it feels like such a ‘done’ look now.

Interested to hear yours!

Me neither.

My studio at home thanks to IKEA.

Yes those massive clocks. And the greige glumness. And big canvass pictures of highland cows.

The multicoloured highland cows? I love those 😂

I don't have one as wouldn't suit my house, but definitely have a longing stare when I'm at leekes!

dollyolly · 12/02/2024 06:43

I feel pure blind fury when people karate-chop their cushions to give them little pointy ears. Can't stand it.

Also hate:
That plush, everything greige with black accents look
When everything looks brand new and perfect
Dark colours on walls
Anything that looks like it came from B&Q homeware section
Gold taps and navy
Filling every surface with mimsy little vases/photos/whatever, looks so contrived.
White cafe-style window shutters on 1930s houses – it looks like your house is baring its teeth
Massive extensions on ordinary houses
Neat gardens

Basically, I only like MY house. Which is painted entirely in Dulux Timeless, plants everywhere, mid-century shit and bare floorboards. I'm sure plenty of people find that utterly cliched!

WhichWayPleaseImLost · 12/02/2024 07:01

It makes me laugh that everyone seemingly hates grey.... 'look at me, I'm such an individual!' Hating recent trends is just jumping on a new trend.

Just keep consuming.

On which note, I cannot forgive a plastic lawn.

Brick effect wallpaper 🤢

Small rooms.
Very low ceilings.
No book shelves.
No personal human life collections or tools As if no one lives there.
No eaves.
No trees.
Kitchen sinks over looking the living room instead of the garden.
Mid grey monotone colour scheme.

tiredinoratia · 12/02/2024 07:17

Gnomes, plastic flower walls, and redneck engineered home storage solutions.

Fizbosshoes · 12/02/2024 07:18

DD has a grey fluffy carpet in her bedroom.
I hate it because it's an absolute bugger to vacuum! I don't have issue with what it looks like though!
She has a grey room but I encouraged her to have some colour, so the blind and lampshade are yellow.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 12/02/2024 07:21

i think in some rooms TV’s on walls is ok, bedrooms for example, where they can be tucked up in the corner and not be intrusive.
I remember seeing a post on a Facebook decor group asking what should be put on the tv cabinet, complete with photo of tv cabinet with the tv screwed to the wall above it! Put the fucking tv on the tv cabinet, you plank!

Fizbosshoes · 12/02/2024 07:23

I do find these type of threads quite snobby though.
So far I've seen people criticise stuff that looks like it came from B and M* , B snd Q and the Range.ie shops where you can pick up stuff cheaply if you want to change the look of a room without fully redecorating.

*I remember MN had a problem with people in B and M during covid 🙄

Violinist64 · 12/02/2024 07:26

I know many here are citing the Fifty Shades of Grey trend but I am in agreement. Grey has always been my least favourite colour as I find it so depressing. I don't like fake lawns either, but our present house, which we moved into last year, has one. We plan to replace it with a real one. I have always disliked wallpaper and prefer neutral paint because you can appreciate your pictures more. Minimalism is too clinical and lacking in any personality but, on the other hand, the biggest turn off for me is messiness and dirt.

43ontherocksporfavor · 12/02/2024 07:31

Whenever a look is popular people will feel the need to slate it. Taste is subjective so decorate for you and not trends. Who cares what people on Mumsnet think?

sorestupid · 12/02/2024 06:18

someone mentioned “anything Ikea”. I don’t think i’ve ever been in a house that didn’t have something from Ikea!

I dont have anything from ikea…most of my friends dont either 🤷🏼‍♀️

Bearpawk · 12/02/2024 07:45

I also dislike an 'accent colour'.
When people pick one colour and shoehorn it in everywhere and go completely overboard. MIL has a neutral country style kitchen with bright lime green accessories everywhere 😂

DisforDarkChocolate · 12/02/2024 07:46

Grey, if it's just walls at least you can paint easily. If it all the carpets or the kitchen I'm not buying your house.

Shiny floors, I hate these. It would take a lot for me to buy a house with these.

I'll never have a budget to buy a house and replace big issues like this.

notacooldad · 12/02/2024 07:49

I hate televisions on walls and televisions above a fire.

I don't like artificial plants, especially the small little plant pots with a fake plant that you get from stores such as Home Bargains, The Range etc.

I hate generic art work. I'd rather have none than an original. You can puck a unique piece up from Etsy or Artfinder for similar prices as a copy of something found everywhere

Slogans, whether an ornament or written on a wall that gives me orders or telling me what things are eg EAT,in the kitchen.

Front doors that open straight into the living room. I know that's a design feature rather than a decor but I still don't like it.

Leather sofas. I have one and it is undeniably and irritatingly practical with small kids but i can't wait to get rid of it.
I found the opposite. The leather settee was much easier and more practical to keep clean when the kids were small.

There are superb ducted range hoods in the market to absorb smells from the kitchen without affecting the rest of the house. Dirty dishes go in the dishwasher or get washed as they are used. The beauty of an open plan kitchen is being able to talk and participate in a conversation while cooking.
It's still bloody noisy when you have the washing machine and dishwasher on and you're trying to watch Corrie!

sorestupid · 12/02/2024 07:52

@Newchapterbeckons Im not saying those people like you don’t exist just that Ikea is incredibly popular.

An open plan kitchen/diner doesn’t mean there isn’t a separate living room

It’s very low quality and flat pack featureless furniture.

Most people shop at IKEA because it is inexpensive and with some imagination you can make it more original.

Plus because it is fairly generic it can easily be mixed in with other furniture.

Maybe not, but a lot of the small Northern terraced houses in my area don't have a separate living room. The ones I have viewed and seen on Rightmove have been opened up into one large room with the stairs in the middle. Often you open the front door straight into the living area, stairs in the middle as a divider and kitchen and dining at the back.

menopausalmare · 12/02/2024 08:00

Hot tub on the patio. Especially if the cover has a layer of green algae on top.

Also a lot if it is greater starter home furniture and reasonable quality. My son bought a kitchen and settee from there and it looks good and is wearing well.
