For me it’s got to be those massive bloody clocks made up of parts which get stuck to the wall. We’re house hunting at the moment and they’re in almost every kitchen. Those and navy walls nearly always coupled with wicker furniture and cheese plants - it feels like such a ‘done’ look now.

Interested to hear yours!

What I call an 'Argos' living room. Fake leather black sofa, cheap red cushions that are flat as a pancake, matching rug with squiggles on, matching shiny curtains.
Absolutely no taste or originality.

Also, tasteless 'vintage' stuff. Most of it is just shit.

Catsmere · 12/02/2024 04:00

I hate greys and whites, cold colours generally (teal, navy for walls or floors) and minimalism - nothing to do with whether they're fashionable, because I haven't the slightest idea what's fashionable here in Australia, let alone in Britain, and as a renter I have little choice in the matter. I have grey carpet in my tiny unit because that's the standard for the retirement village where I live. I dislike it - cold, as are the white walls. I also dislike vertical blinds. Stupid things don't keep the light out, and break if you put curtains on the curtain rods, and look like all the offices I worked in during the '80s. What I do like is warm colours, wood bookshelves full of my books, my dear old coffee table that's older than I am (mid-century, I think), lots of pictures on the walls, and my red armchairs. Oh and cats residing on whatever furniture they fancy at any given moment. 😸😸

Conservatories of any kind
White plastic double glazed windows especially in period houses or cottages. That is a crime.
Plastic anything Inc furniture
Anything ‘on trend’ I like to feel the families character and values, and laboriously copying trends feels way too try hard.
Fakes art and prints on the walls
fake fireplaces and wood burners
high gloss kitchens
Black, white or red - maroon or purple
Messy Bookcases
anything from ikea
Jacuzzis
small cluttered rooms with no storage
leather sofas of any kind
square modern houses that are supposed to be contemporary but feel soulless
Concrete and industrial style. Not remotely comfortable or cosy.

I’m okay with most of these things, putting design choices down to fashion or personal choice. However, the one thing I can’t seem to get over is people putting books on “curated” bookshelves with only the pages showing (spines at the back) so all you see en masse is cream coloured pages. How on earth can anyone find a book title without having to take each book out?

Not to mention, surely they'll damage the books pulling them out?

Or are these the modern version of fake book backs that will never be read?

Any room that's been subject to 'interior design'. It's a room, to be used for various purposes, or not. Certain purposeful stuff needs to be included and if it's a home, various bits and bobs accumulated to date.

Why does it need someone to come in, take your money, and design your home for you? More money than sense some people have...meanwhile...

T.H.I.N.G is happy to come and 'design' any room if ye can pay, just send your hard-earned dosh to MNIamASucker.com.

Because people feel good in spaces that make them happy.

Interior design is art.

Many people know what they like but struggle to bring it all together. If they can afford to hire someone to help, why not?

We buy clothes we feel good in that fashion designers create as their art

We go to hair stylists in order to have hair we love and feel good in which is their art.

Clean organized spaces that are beautifully designed can change our mood. It can change how we live and how we feel.

Open plan living, just dreadful. Everyone in one space, cooking smells, dishes, mess etc. what's wrong with doors and separate spaces? Just hideous.

I completely agree with this.
The world has gone bokers with open space layouts. It's completly unpractical, only works for TV shows.

Dustybarn · 12/02/2024 04:44

The biggest design horror for me is an open plan bedroom / bathroom. Followed by a windowless bathroom.

Then bad eyelet curtains (often look cheap and scream “off the shelf”), dramatically painted feature walls in purple, teal etc, large canvas family photos and “live love vomit” signs. Large bulky fake leather matching lounge suites score an extra point if they recline.

echt · 12/02/2024 05:17

Coffee tables covered with horizontally stacked, usually art books. There's nowhere to put a drinks glass, nor can you flick through a book that's under a pile of others. All-round failure.

Wall paper
Old fashion furniture
Clutter
Wood, melamine or granite kitchen tops. They are either difficult to maintain clean, burn, or will crack if you transfer a dish straight from the oven without protecting it.
I like grey and natural colours on walls. They are a neutral base to put colours everywhere else.
Dark or strong colours in bathrooms.
Carpets in bathrooms (yuck)

SquashPenguin · 12/02/2024 05:58

Panelling looks shit in a new build, but if you’ve got 10ft ceilings in an Edwardian house then done right it can look good.

Crushed velvet
Carpets
Open plan
High gloss kitchens
Marble 🤮

I disagree. The reason why open space layouts are so popular is because they make the most of the space available without walls.

There are superb ducted range hoods in the market to absorb smells from the kitchen without affecting the rest of the house. Dirty dishes go in the dishwasher or get washed as they are used. The beauty of an open plan kitchen is being able to talk and participate in a conversation while cooking.

Frankly, some of you should join the XXI century.

CakedUpHigh · 12/02/2024 06:05

Shiny kitchen cabinets. Fake beams/chimney breasts. Inspirational quotes on the walls. Furniture made of mirrors. Multiple lightbulb lights. Too many scatter cushions. Hidden appliances in the kitchen. Huge master bedroom with walk-in wardrobe and ensuite bigger than family bathroom at the expense of the other bedrooms. Too small living space then a pointless office space or too small kitchen then a laundry room. Kitchens that are only an island.

sorestupid · 12/02/2024 06:06

Washing up liquid on show at the sink

lol, do you hide yours?

Although I can’t stand that everyone now has to have Aesop soap next to the sink.

Disagree, I think it’s nice to eat in a kitchen so in order for that to happen lots of houses need to knock through the galley kitchen & dining room.

sorestupid · 12/02/2024 06:17

unfitted carpets are large rugs, especially the ones like flying carpets

Surely they are called rugs though!

sorestupid · 12/02/2024 06:18

someone mentioned “anything Ikea”. I don’t think i’ve ever been in a house that didn’t have something from Ikea!

Alondra · 12/02/2024 06:26

I went for high gloss when I renovated the kitchen. I had a lot of miss givens about dirt maintenance and they would always be dirty with fingers.

I was told high gloss is easy to maintain, and frankly, it is. A wet clean cloth with nothing more than water takes care of any stains. I don't have handles on the top cabinets but I have them on the bottom drawers which are the mostly used.

High gloss is not difficult to maintain.

Me neither.

babyproblems · 12/02/2024 06:31

Live Love Laugh word ‘art’ shite. So unbelievably tacky. Also grey / white theme ala Mrs Hinch. I don’t mind grey or white generally but that sort of look with grey walls and white painted wood is so cheap and overdone.
I also can’t stand PVC windows and doors… I cannot get over them on UK architecture- they don’t go with any style of house other than ultra modern builds and even then cheap windows and doors are so bulky.

Last one- artificial grass. Never in a million years would I have this. If i viewed a house with it it would put me off unless the money sums allowed it’s removal. It sums up everything that’s unhealthy with modern life today imo

Ohforaslimmerme2024 · 12/02/2024 06:32

🤣🤣🤣🤣I think most things about my new kitchen are in here, big clock, conservatory, plastic furniture, grey units (although mine are almost black so maybe that’s ok and it’s only in the utility room), handleless doors are a cleaning dream with a huge microfibre sponge.

I blooming love it. Each to their own. And I’m def not selling Ever. 😂
