"Bimbo" - apparently I sound like one at work?

I've been thinking about this all week.
Dh overheard me talking to my manager (whole other thread) and when I finished announced that I sound like a 'Bimbo' .
Apparently I'm too friendly and laugh too much? So now I'm really doubting all my interactions at work.
I have a senior position and spend most of my days on teams. Is everyone else thinking that? What can I do about it?
How do I be less 'bimboish' or is dh just being a nob?

He's being a knob.

Wolfpa · 11/02/2024 10:29

Your DH is being a nob

TheSnowyOwl · 11/02/2024 10:29

I’d tell him that he sounds like a knob at home and then ignore his comment.

Lammveg · 11/02/2024 10:29

What a fucking dick your DH is.

TheCrowFromBelow · 11/02/2024 10:30

He’s a knob.

easylifeneeded · 11/02/2024 10:30

I’m assuming your manager is male? He’s absolutely being a knob and it’s all to do with him not liking you being friendly to another man

Echobelly · 11/02/2024 10:30

'Bimbo'?! Is he stuck in the 80s? Or maybe the stone age?!

Shayisgreat · 11/02/2024 10:30

Knob (jealous Knob)

Candleabra · 11/02/2024 10:30

Your husband is being a knob. Does he belittle you in other ways too?

Sobbingteen · 11/02/2024 10:31

What a horrible, sexist insult. It says more about him than you that he would use that. He's a nob.

AdoraBell · 11/02/2024 10:31

Absolute knob. Ignore him.

BMIwoes · 11/02/2024 10:31

Which is more likely? A) you got a senior position despite everyone you work with secretly thinking you're a bimbo. B) your husband is being a dick. I'd say B.

Stressedgiraffe · 11/02/2024 10:32

My manager is actually female but I don't differentiate between how I talk to men or women.
He thinks my work won't take me seriously because I come across as friendly and chatty.

Bimbo is a word he will have chosen very deliberately to knock your confidence because of all the negative associations with that misogynistic dated word. If he’s now ensured you change your behaviour not to come across as a “bimbo” then you won’t be being nice and friendly to another man.

Plexie · 11/02/2024 10:34

Perhaps your work personna is different to your wife/home personna and it's the first time he's noticed?

What line of work is he in to make such expert judgement on your professional communication style?

I think this too. It is such a specific use of a word rarely used against men.

easylifeneeded · 11/02/2024 10:34

I see you’ve said your manager is female and I am surprised but still think his thinking is probably the same. Knocks your confidence and keeps you in the box he thinks you should be in and less likely to think you can do better than him.

Mrscountduckula · 11/02/2024 10:34

Your husband sounds like my ex-husband. As well as phone calls, my clothes were also up for criticism - apparently no one in his office dressed like me (in completely normal work clothes..). It’s jealousy on your husband’s part, as long as you’re happy with how you conduct yourself at work ignore him

Why does he suddenly think he’s the expert on how you’re perceived by others?
I’m very friendly at work and unfortunately am far too chatty, to the point where I really have to make an effort to reel it in.
I’ve always been taken seriously at work. I do good work, that’s why!

PinkiOcelot · 11/02/2024 10:39

Friendly and chatty does not equal bimbo. I think he’s chosen that word to undermine you. I always thought bimbo meant a bit of an airhead. Nothing between the ears etc.

Needanewnamebeingwatched · 11/02/2024 10:40

I would say he is jealous of your work role and wants to belittle you to knock your confidence and make you question yourself.

Seems it has worked...

Oh and he is a knob!!

Stressedgiraffe · 11/02/2024 10:40

I've been having problems with my manager and he "helpfully" thinks it's because I sound like a Bimbo. He thinks she'll respect me less as I'm friendly and chatty.
I'm now going over all my interactions and worrying everyone else thinks I'm incompetent because of the way I talk.
It's really knocked my confidence.

OP posts:
DRS1970 · 11/02/2024 10:43

Just tell him you only behave like that with people you have a crush on. That should make him think.

LlynTegid · 11/02/2024 10:44

Bimbo is an awful expression and suggests you lack intelligence. Saying you laugh too much and don't come across as taking some aspects of work seriously would be a valid concern for your manager to raise, if it is the case.

Your DH should not be listening to work conversations, and indeed you should not any of his.
