Super nosey post: How much do you spend on your main holiday?

ClassyJen · 10/02/2024 19:04

I feel like have the cost of holidays spiralled over the last few years to the extent that I have absolutely no idea what the going rate should be. Every year when I start googling villas it’s like the pricing has been set by rolling a bunch of dice.
I’d love to know how much you spend per person on your main holiday vs how much you earn for context.
Assuming I go first, I earn just under £300k basic (not cash rich as mostly eaten up by school fees etc) and now spend about £7k flights + villa for the three of us for a week in Europe. I thought this was quite a lot but our considerably lower earning friends have just shared that they spend quite a lot more that us. Is this a reasonable amount? What are you confortable spending? I seem to be able to evaluate spend on a pair of jeans no problem but holidays are blowing my mind…

You earn £300k really and you're asking what people spend on holidays? The answer is probably a lot less than you 😆

Immeltinnnnngggg · 10/02/2024 19:07

Minimum of £200,000 per person.

Icepop79 · 10/02/2024 19:08

I spend about £1000-1500 on our summer holiday - usually a week in an apartment somewhere in coastal Devon. Every other year we do go ski-ing. The most we’ve spent is an all inclusive week with Club Med which was £8,000. It was amazing but I felt guilty the entire week that I had spent so much on 1 week!

We will have mini breaks and weekend breaks a couple of times a year - either to a festival or to somewhere like bluestone.

Icepop79 · 10/02/2024 19:09

Oh, and I don’t earn anywhere near £300k. I’m on less than a third of that amount!

shreknjumps · 10/02/2024 19:09

One meeeeelion pounds

Finishingoff · 10/02/2024 19:10

Oh just do one with your boasting.

Tight arse.

NickMarlow · 10/02/2024 19:11

We've managed to save enough for 2 holidays this year. £350 for 4 nights in a caravan in May half term, and £90 for 3 nights camping in August.

JengaNonConfirming · 10/02/2024 19:12

I do three AI holidays a year, for a week at a time. Each one I budget 1K for. I've noticed that holidays I did last year for around £900 are nearer £1100/1200 this year.

Amba1998 · 10/02/2024 19:13

We spent about £10k in total but across 2-3 abroad holidays

we do camping holidays, so this probably isn’t the thread for me 😅

Times is hard 🤷🏽‍♀️

A maximum of £1500 for the "main" holiday. Either Interrailing or taking the ferry to France, touring and camping. I'm a single mum on benefits, so all the organising/ driving etc falls to me. This year we're taking the ferry to Roscoff, driving down to Spain and getting the ferry back from Santander. Every time I have a little bit of extra cash I put it towards the holiday, so the ferries are booked now, and with the next bit of "spare" money I'll start booking campsites.

I always think it must be tough to have an enormous amount of money yet no imagination....😏

1988Username · 10/02/2024 19:17

I just buy villas wherever I want to go, wouldn't want to holiday with the other people.

QueenBean22 · 10/02/2024 19:18

I earn about 1/10th of your salary. Our holiday this year is £2.5K in Greece. Last year was £1.5K in Portugal.

DuchessNope · 10/02/2024 19:18

Changed my mind, no idea why I thought anyone would care 😂

fishonabicycle · 10/02/2024 19:18

Oh do fuck off!

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 10/02/2024 19:20

How is this going to help you OP? You'll get estimates from a few hundred up to 10k

For a week in a villa, I'd think 4k upwards depending on spec (number of bedrooms, private pool, distance from beach, whether you need a car etc).

TeenLifeMum · 10/02/2024 19:20

Totally depends on the year - last year we went to Orlando (family of 5) so this year is a smaller holiday but still going to be about £5,500 for the week, then we have a uk city break also planned. I’m going to Dublin with friends too.

we earn just over £100k but deliberately choose holidays over a bigger home and flash cars. Depends what you want to prioritise. No right or wrong. We knew we couldn’t afford 3 in private school so go for shared experiences - USA Road trip New York to Wisconsin lakes via Chicago/Vancouver to Calgary through the Rockies. My dc are 12-15 and have been to North America 4 times (we have family there). Italy, France, Spain. Holiday prices vary hugely. Hoping to get to USA again in 2025 but do need to replace a car this summer.

PSEnny · 10/02/2024 19:20

I earn no where near you. I’ve paid 6K for a house but this was with a large group so shared cost.
I’m a single parent with one child and this year I’m paying £1600 for a week in the Canaries at Easter. Summer holiday is Europe and total cost for 12 nights is around £3000. There will be a couple of weekends away and a few nights in London so maybe around another £1000.

On a budget this year

BeaRF75 · 10/02/2024 19:22

It's different every year - depends what we do and where we go. Plus, may pay at different times over several months for different things from different accounts (flights/hotels/meals etc) so I don't think we ever add it all up.

Yesnosorryplease · 10/02/2024 19:23

You sound a bit ridiculous. Our income is not even approaching 6 figures, yet we've had really lovely holidays. I can't imagine having your income and then having to worry about holiday spending.

£7k for 3 of you is a lot by anyone's standards. Over 2k per person for a week? Silly money imo!!

We mostly holiday in this country and spend more like hundreds than thousands, camping and youth hosteling etc. We take our own bikes and self cater and have a blast.

We've been abroad a handful of times and I've managed holidays for a family of 5, to Croatia and Spain, s/c with a pool, some meals out, activities etc for definitely less than half of your 7k.

Last year we used the Eurotunnel and went to France, Belgium and Netherlands for just over 2k.

Festivemoose · 10/02/2024 19:26

“Main” holiday 🙄

I spend about £700 on 4 nights away for my family (2 adults and one child) on our only holiday we have each year.
