Super nosey post: How much do you spend on your main holiday?

ClassyJen · 10/02/2024 19:04

I feel like have the cost of holidays spiralled over the last few years to the extent that I have absolutely no idea what the going rate should be. Every year when I start googling villas it’s like the pricing has been set by rolling a bunch of dice.
I’d love to know how much you spend per person on your main holiday vs how much you earn for context.
Assuming I go first, I earn just under £300k basic (not cash rich as mostly eaten up by school fees etc) and now spend about £7k flights + villa for the three of us for a week in Europe. I thought this was quite a lot but our considerably lower earning friends have just shared that they spend quite a lot more that us. Is this a reasonable amount? What are you confortable spending? I seem to be able to evaluate spend on a pair of jeans no problem but holidays are blowing my mind…

We haven't been on holiday for about four years, other bills take priority so I guess £0?

PrincessHoneysuckle · 10/02/2024 20:27

£3.5-6k on 2 weeks 5 star all inclusive abroad. We went for 3 weeks last year but that was a one off

Firebird83 · 10/02/2024 20:29

About 3-3.5k for a family of 4 for a week somewhere in Europe in the summer holidays

madderthanahatter · 10/02/2024 20:33

OP holidays really have gone up 😔 Maybe next year you could target the Sun £9.50 holidays?

Yer a skinflint hun.

People who I know spend 1.5-3 months wages a year on holidays and breaks. We are only having one holiday this year and spending a month's salary each. If I earned £300k I'd have no qualms about spending £25k. However I could probably do the holiday I would want on about £10k.

Brumhilda · 10/02/2024 20:54

On us olidays we usually get up before we go to bed and lick M1 motorway clean with us bare tongues..

and that’s luxury - at a farthing a week we do it every Preston guild.

I am retired on an income of less than £13,000 per annum.

I go on 2 or 3 holidays a year (One UK and two in Turkey). One of the holidays I pay flight and accommodation for my adult daughter too (she's low wage and it's company for me). Generally buy flights separately and then either a cheap BnB or AirBnB appartment.

House paid off and low utilities.

Beezknees · 10/02/2024 21:05

Around 2 grand for 2 of us.

Oh just do one with your boasting.

Applies to more than just the op on this thread really

Redwineislife · 10/02/2024 21:08

This is a joke, no way anyone could be so tone deaf to ask ‘typical’ earners how much someone earning £300k basic should spend on a holiday 🤣🤣🤣🤣

I would imagine you could spend whatever the bloody hell you wanted to…

WingsofRain · 10/02/2024 21:10

I had a weekend away about 10 years ago. I haven’t been able to afford to go anywhere since and I haven’t had an actual holiday in the way you mean it for well over 20 years.

I only earn enough to feed myself and pay bills.

trulyunruly01 · 10/02/2024 21:12

Last year less than £1k on camping in France. Brilliant time.
This year it will be £12,800 on a 'trip of a lifetime', bearing in mind that we've had 4 fairly quiet summers. Hope it's as good as the Loire last year.

MadamBuxton · 10/02/2024 21:20

People I know with your income level typically spend much more on holidays - say at least £15-20k p.a. So if you need permission to spend more, go for it.

seeitthroughmyeyes · 10/02/2024 21:20

Got 4 holidays this year. But we also do not have children to consider. Our main holiday is costing us nearly 3k. That's the most expensive holiday we've ever been on.

SummerDays2020 · 10/02/2024 21:20

A lot less than you! The clue is in 'main' holiday. I try to take my Dc away every other year. I spent £500 on our last holiday - it was a few days away in Bournemouth - we had an amazing time!

CaramelMac · 10/02/2024 21:22

I’ve never spent more than £1k for a week, including food, but then our combined income is around £60k so probably not quite in the same league as you.

Being nosy - where is your 'trip of a lifetime' to, if you don't mind sharing?

Jog on

A maximum of £1500 for the "main" holiday. Either Interrailing or taking the ferry to France, touring and camping. I'm a single mum on benefits, so all the organising/ driving etc falls to me. This year we're taking the ferry to Roscoff, driving down to Spain and getting the ferry back from Santander. Every time I have a little bit of extra cash I put it towards the holiday, so the ferries are booked now, and with the next bit of "spare" money I'll start booking campsites.

I always think it must be tough to have an enormous amount of money yet no imagination....😏

That sounds amazing!

Christmaslights21 · 10/02/2024 21:26

We hire a private island. Richard Branson drops us off in a helicopter. Feeling the pinch as our household income is approx £2m so considering flying commercial this year. Cost of living crisis etc.

TempestTost · 10/02/2024 21:29

We don't get a holiday most years. If we do we rent a cabin or go tenting in driving distance. FWIW, campsite fees have gone way up.

Nah, they’re not in private jet territory so peasants really in comparison to where they’d like to be.
Its a bullshit thread.
