Super nosey post: How much do you spend on your main holiday?

ClassyJen · 10/02/2024 19:04

I feel like have the cost of holidays spiralled over the last few years to the extent that I have absolutely no idea what the going rate should be. Every year when I start googling villas it’s like the pricing has been set by rolling a bunch of dice.
I’d love to know how much you spend per person on your main holiday vs how much you earn for context.
Assuming I go first, I earn just under £300k basic (not cash rich as mostly eaten up by school fees etc) and now spend about £7k flights + villa for the three of us for a week in Europe. I thought this was quite a lot but our considerably lower earning friends have just shared that they spend quite a lot more that us. Is this a reasonable amount? What are you confortable spending? I seem to be able to evaluate spend on a pair of jeans no problem but holidays are blowing my mind…

Lost me at “main” holiday.

Lost me at 300k basic but bleating about school fees. Eye rolled so hard I need to see the optician Monday.

If we go away all inclusive with 5 of us it costs roughly 6k. Regular holiday abroad would be around 4 plus spending.

Moier · 10/02/2024 23:13

Which creative industry? Can you be more specific.

I spend about £1000-1500 on our summer holiday - usually a week in an apartment somewhere in coastal Devon. Every other year we do go ski-ing. The most we’ve spent is an all inclusive week with Club Med which was £8,000. It was amazing but I felt guilty the entire week that I had spent so much on 1 week!

We will have mini breaks and weekend breaks a couple of times a year - either to a festival or to somewhere like bluestone.

Very interesting. Same on the guilt thing

I’m calling bullshit, jobs in the creative industry don’t pay that well

Tulipblank · 10/02/2024 23:32

You know £7k isn't loads for a week abroad in school holidays....but for what it is worth last year we spent about £9k including spending money for 2.5 weeks for our "main holiday" which was a multi location break.

This year we're only going for a week and it's currently coming in at around £5.5k without spending money. That's for 4 people. We also have a number of other breaks booked (few long weekends, couple of city breaks etc). I reckon we spend about £15k a year on holidays as a family of 4. Our combined salary isn't £300k, but it's decent.

Don’t forget to grab a bottle of Lidl vinegar and top up your personality whilst you’re there 👀

How much are school fees that they take up most of your income?!

£50k net pp

We'll be paying just short of 2.5k for a week in canaries for 4 of us, but we got a free child place plus we're going term time.

We usually go to UK for a week in spring / summer, and are happy to pay up to 1k or so for a house or air BnB self catering, with travel and meals on top. Usually Cornwall or similar.

We have for the first time ever booked 2 weeks away at Christmas to Egypt and it's costing 7K but it's a one off as it's a special birthday. I reckon we're probably going to need to budget around 3k for main abroad hols from now on.

DH and I probably earn 75k or so between us.

People who I know spend 1.5-3 months wages a year on holidays and breaks. We are only having one holiday this year and spending a month's salary each. If I earned £300k I'd have no qualms about spending £25k. However I could probably do the holiday I would want on about £10k.

very interesting, thanks 🧐

Dh and I are sooooo lucky enough to have both became disabled within 5 weeks of each other 3 years ago. So ya know my millions (roughly 20k) that I get from adp, well the backpay went on a big holiday for this year. 5k for two weeks all inclusive.

typically it's about 1k either in the UK (haven for the wee ones and taking the dog) or about the same for marbella, bil lived there so we know where to get cheap apartments.

How awful, so sorry to hear that. ❤️

Stacey Dooley did a programme where she went to stay with an aristo family. Kids at £30k schools, massive manor house, country pile, skiing over half term, they were minted. One of the (teen) dc asked for £100 for something school related and steam came out of the DMs ears and she started incredulously ranting that "one hundred pounds is SUCH A LOT OF MONEY!". Stacey was clearly a bit bemused and several days later asked her about it. Again the mother reiterated that £100 is no meagre sum and they'd have to really think about spending it 🤔. Maybe the OP is similar?

This. London version though and the school fees are much more expensive

Classy you are not writing such a tone deaf post if indeed it's in the least bit true 😕

Minimum of £200,000 per person.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

BusyMummy001 · 10/02/2024 23:56

Not willing to give actual figures as people will criticise and judge (will do anyway, no doubt), but in our case it works out as 5-7% of basic salary.

Both our kids are teens, so have adult air fares. We like full board/all-inclusive so that the ‘kids’ can take themselves off for lunch or go to an informal restaurant for pizza if they fancy it - gives them independence and means DH and I get to dress up a couple of nights and go to the posh restaurant. We also have at least 2 rooms or a villa type arrangement so the kids have their freedom to do activities, join us on cultural trips, or hang out in the room.

When they were young they also went camping a lot (I ran brownies and then beavers) but DH hates that stuff, and so do my teens as they’ve grown up. Once a year we treat ourselves.

Punxsatawnyphil · 10/02/2024 23:59

Our last holiday abroad was £9000 all in. That was in 2019 and could not afford to spend that every year. We have had short uk breaks for around £600 since then.

Notalldogs23 · 11/02/2024 00:08

It is of course all relative - I try to think of my holiday spend in terms of how many weeks of take home pay.

When DS was little and I worked part time it's was probably 4 weeks pay for a week in the Med (campsite usually) and maybe a short city break in a city hostel/basic hotel for the two of us.

I'm now full time and have had a couple of promotions, i think I spend about 2 weeks pay for holidays, usually self-catering apartment, and a city break in a reasonable hotel.

Despite the tone deaf OP, it is interesting to see how much people spend on holidays as a proportion of their income. I used to travel a lot when I was younger, but was happy with shared hostel bathrooms, wild camping and bus travel then.

goodnessmeits2024 · 11/02/2024 00:10

Historically £6,000 for holidays and £500-£700 for a weekend break. We always tried to get a short break away every 6/8 weeks.

Sadly this level of spending has abruptly stopped.

ClairDeLaLune · 11/02/2024 00:24

I earn just under £300k

You mean “I get paid just under £300k”

No-one actually truly earns that.

RazzleDazz1e · 11/02/2024 00:36

Husband and I earn £250k between us. No children. Usually spend 20-30 every year on holidays. Even with 2xsets of fees I find it hard to imagine that you are not cash rich - you’ve probably taken on an unrealistic mortgage or wildly overspending elsewhere.

Immeltinnnnngggg · 10/02/2024 19:07

only 200k? mate that doesn't even keep me in cookies for a week these days

AllTheChaos · 11/02/2024 00:46

Our main holiday each year (only holiday I have, in fact) is to go and stay with family in the countryside. Costs about £200 total in train fairs, and £50 for petrol and a thank you present for family (who take us out and about to beaches etc each day).

AllTheChaos · 11/02/2024 00:49

My ex in laws spend about £30k each on holidays. More last year, making up for when they couldn’t go away during Covid. And no, they don’t help with costs for DD.

ReadingSoManyThreads · 11/02/2024 00:50

"Main holiday"?

Oh goodness, we have a family holiday once every 5 years or so, either within the UK or just over in Europe via Eurostar. Spend around a grand.
