Super nosey post: How much do you spend on your main holiday?

ClassyJen · 10/02/2024 19:04

I feel like have the cost of holidays spiralled over the last few years to the extent that I have absolutely no idea what the going rate should be. Every year when I start googling villas it’s like the pricing has been set by rolling a bunch of dice.
I’d love to know how much you spend per person on your main holiday vs how much you earn for context.
Assuming I go first, I earn just under £300k basic (not cash rich as mostly eaten up by school fees etc) and now spend about £7k flights + villa for the three of us for a week in Europe. I thought this was quite a lot but our considerably lower earning friends have just shared that they spend quite a lot more that us. Is this a reasonable amount? What are you confortable spending? I seem to be able to evaluate spend on a pair of jeans no problem but holidays are blowing my mind…

This is a joke, no way anyone could be so tone deaf to ask ‘typical’ earners how much someone earning £300k basic should spend on a holiday 🤣🤣🤣🤣

I would imagine you could spend whatever the bloody hell you wanted to…

Stacey Dooley did a programme where she went to stay with an aristo family. Kids at £30k schools, massive manor house, country pile, skiing over half term, they were minted. One of the (teen) dc asked for £100 for something school related and steam came out of the DMs ears and she started incredulously ranting that "one hundred pounds is SUCH A LOT OF MONEY!". Stacey was clearly a bit bemused and several days later asked her about it. Again the mother reiterated that £100 is no meagre sum and they'd have to really think about spending it 🤔. Maybe the OP is similar?

Dunnoburt · 10/02/2024 21:33

Genuinely not had a holiday for over 10 years........can't afford it.....

Crazycatlady79 · 10/02/2024 21:34

Nowt, as not been on holiday in 10 years, as just can't afford to. 😅

MsChatterbox · 10/02/2024 21:35

Our main holiday this year was £52 for the accommodation, £25 for the travel, £50 for the food. 2 adults 2 children. Mon-Fri. Entertainment included in the accommodation.

sorestupid · 10/02/2024 21:35

How much are school fees that they take up most of your income?!

I wouldn't know. We haven't been able to afford a holiday at all for years.

But you do you.

Completely out of touch with most people.

Im with you we haven't had any kind of holiday for five years
My dh, did however get an unexpected inheritance from his estranged dad a couple of months ago not life changing by any stretch of the imagination but I'm determined to have a holiday this year it will be uk but I'm hoping to go to Devon or Cornwall we live in the North west so it will be a big trip for us

TBNT · 10/02/2024 21:41

Hah at your wage + holiday budget.

We earn way less than you.

Last year was about £15k on our main holiday. This year around £10k.

Lifebeganat50 · 10/02/2024 21:42

We do quantity over quality so a fortnight in the Canaries in August, self catering for 2 of us is £1500 this year…cheap and cheerful apartment, which is spotless and has everything we need. We go for the sunshine, we’ll also have another 2 single weeks, which depending on flights will be something between £500-£700

ohdeerohdear · 10/02/2024 21:43

Last year we had 5 nights all inclusive in uk and it was £1200 for family of 4.

This year Greece, 10 days self catering £3k

I earn £35k

You sound like a dickhead.

Moier · 10/02/2024 21:45

Well l have 2.2 mil ..
( yes that's right.. I've said before about my compensation that was attempted murder that left me disabled after being thrown under a bus). Look at the photos.. my first hol this year.. and the price.
The villa is £545 and sleeps four.
Communal pool.. self catering.
Eat out on an evening.. Salad/ cheese/ meats for lunch.
Car hire is £114 for week.
So yes l am well off but l still don't spend thousands on an holiday.
It can be as cheap or expensive as you want it to be.. as long as its your kind of holiday

About £1000pp for main holiday (flights, accommodation, transfers, activities and food) that’s 2 adults sharing outside of school holidays. Plus a couple of long weekends abroad booked and will do some overnights or weekends in the UK. Both earn a fraction of what you do so thoughts n prayers on your struggles 🙄

feelingalittlehorse · 10/02/2024 21:51

Lost me at “main” holiday.

sorestupid · 10/02/2024 21:59

@Lonelycrab that makes more sense 😆

Nowayjose123 · 10/02/2024 22:17

I earn just over £56000000 basic. Obviously I'm very cash poor after school fees so I love to cut the vouchers out of The Sun. You can get a holiday for only £9.50. You should give it a go you'd love it!

WhatsMyUsername89 · 10/02/2024 22:41

Genuine question; what do you do for work for 300k a year?

WhatIsHeThinking · 10/02/2024 22:45

£3.5k ish on the main summer holiday. Around £2k on Feb and October UK breaks and a couple of city breaks abroad.
Hopefully more now we don’t need to spend so much on the house.

BronwenTheBrave · 10/02/2024 22:50

Icepop79 · 10/02/2024 19:09

Oh, and I don’t earn anywhere near £300k. I’m on less than a third of that amount!

Poverty is a terrible thing. Wishing you every success.

RogueFemale · 10/02/2024 22:50

I spend nothing on holidays as I don't go on holidays.

mollyfolk · 10/02/2024 22:53

We spend 3k (including everything) on a holiday. We also do about two short breaks a year. As a household we earn around 150k but we are in Ireland where salaries (and costs) are higher. It’s really a how long is a piece of string question.

ClassyJen · 10/02/2024 22:53

Immeltinnnnngggg · 10/02/2024 19:07

Minimum of £200,000 per person.

Mum, is that you?!

My thought too! What is a “main” holiday?! genuine question. The most expensive?

ClassyJen · 10/02/2024 22:58

ConsuelaHammock · 10/02/2024 19:32

You earn 300k? Wow! What do you do ?
I earn £43 k if I work full time hours.
Last year I spent approx £4k for two weeks for one adult and two children.

I’ve been in the creative industry for 30 years. Not remotely for the faint hearted but great money.
