Just been watching the news about Biden's memory. He really needs to step down IMHO.

@Puzzledandpissedoff
agree, but
don't seem to have a realistic alternative to offer - it’s just quite astonishing isn’t it. Of all the capable people there are in the US!

EasternStandard · 10/02/2024 14:41

I’m not sure there’s anyone else is there?

Both seem to be ahead in their parties

Tattletwat · 10/02/2024 14:43

Biden doesn't know what day it is, Trump doesn't care what day it is.

300 million people and this is the best eithier party has got is crazy.

He has sadly deteriorated significantly. It is a shame that Kamala Harris hasn’t stepped in and insisted he be assessed for fitness in office.

She has actually made a statement backing him, saying the report is political.

Biden does have a speech impediment, think it must take a lot of thought to stop it happening in public. Not sure why they are not open about that. Trump mixed up Niki Halley the other day for Nancy pelosi.
Did you hear what he said to a lawyer taking his deposition ‘ see you next Tuesday’ turns out it means Cunt.
Imagine what he would do to all intelligent women in the US.

fliptopbin · 10/02/2024 14:54

I was discussing this with my DS 17, and he wisely pointed out that once there is a question about Biden,'s competence, his credibility has gone. And since essentially the accusation against him is that he is mortal and aging, there is no possible defence.
He is currently one of the most, if not the most powerful men on earth, he will have the best healthcare possible, but even these things do not make him immune to aging.

Fuck straight off with your uninformed understanding of the US political system.

So thankful all you non-US armchair "political experts" fuckers can't vote.

Go fix your own shit - it's a fucking MESS.

Given that much of the President’s job is foreign policy, the opinions of people outside the US matter.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 10/02/2024 15:00

"Don't seem to have a realistic alternative to offer"- it’s just quite astonishing isn’t it. Of all the capable people there are in the US!

It is indeed, @Clearinguptheclutter, but as I've said before, the difficulty is that few with real integrity would want to go anywhere near politics (and who could blame them)

FWIW I'm as horrified at the idea of Trump2 as anyone else, but I suspect that some of the nastiness we're seeing from staunch democrats is born of their own frustration, because they know the party's making a ghastly mistake which is going to see everyone stuck with him

Allergictoironing · 10/02/2024 15:02

Puzzledandpissedoff · 10/02/2024 13:11

Actually no, that was another poster - perhaps you're also getting confused?

I don't get how someone as tarnished and clearly inappropriate as Trump gets near a party nomination

Neither do I, @RhubarbGingerJam, but then that's politics for you - as said, the same politics which sees one candidate rightly charged and the other not

I think the difference there is that one person did everything in his power to deny he had any papers, arranged to have any evidence he had them destroyed, then when some were found denied he had any more (which he did have), then tried to "declassify" them retrospectively which is forbidden. They also showed these papers off to people with no security clearance to boast about having them. There was a large number of boxes.

The other person, the moment it was suggested they had papers, did a complete search & handed over everything he had with an apology. There was one box and a few personal notebooks.

So both may have possessed papers they shouldn't have, but one immediately co-operated with enforcement and the other lied and obstructed them at every turn. One could easily have forgotten he even had the papers, the other not only knew damn well he had them, but showed them off.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 10/02/2024 15:06

I’m not sure there’s anyone else is there?

I guess there's always Michelle, @EasternStandard Wink

I know she's said repeatedly that she doesn't want it, but I'd be absolutely amazed if she's not being pressured behind the scenes - though the lady really does have integrity so could presumably resist it if she wishes

ScentlessAprentice · 10/02/2024 15:10

Yeah I'm just going to watch The West Wing and live in a happy Bartlet bubble

Puzzledandpissedoff · 10/02/2024 15:15

Very valid points there, @Allergictoironing, but it won't stop Trump spinning himself as some sort of saviour who everyone's "out to get", and worse still some will believe him

And if they did manage to try Biden it's possible his only defence may be that he "forgot", which given his obvious decline would hardly help matters

As ever with politics it's the optics which count, with honesty and principles coming a very poor second

Talkinpeace · 10/02/2024 15:19

Its a shame because there are some good Democratic candidates available.

If Biden had said after the mid terms that he AND Harris would not run
then a solid Dem candidate could have been picked
but Harris is hanging around the party as a known non winner.

The GOP is hanging on to Trump as a last gasp.
If Trump fails, the party will implode.
If Trump becomes incapacitated or incarcerated the party will implode.

Part of me hopes Nikki Haley keeps going just to give GOP voters a choice at each session - even if she does not spend much money.

ByTheSea · 10/02/2024 15:26

EasternEcho · 10/02/2024 09:12

The choice is between one geriatric man of honor and vast experience, and another geriatric man without honor, a congenital liar, a sex offender, a tax chiseler, wanna be dictator, draft dodger and an traitor to his oath of office. I think I'll vote for the former man every time.

And as a U.S. citizen with a vote, I will too.

Tiddlywinks63 · 10/02/2024 16:50

justasking111 · 10/02/2024 00:29

But don't the American people deserve better than these two choices?

Obviously they do but they chose these two…..

HRTQueen · 10/02/2024 17:55

i am not sure who the democrats could put forward at this point

the other issue is Biden isn’t looking confident, he was defensive the other day and for five minutes on form but as soon as he became confused he looked lost hw managed to regain himself but it’s clear in his speech and body language

Trump is more confident than ever and just skips over when he forgets what he planning to say and into the next subject

I don’t think this election is about the core supporters it’s will either of them get complacent or floating voters to vote for them and the campaigning will change peoples minds

Biden doesn’t look physically capable of such an intense campaign

Talkinpeace · 10/02/2024 18:08

I am a registered US voter.
I wish neither of them was on the ballot.

The Democratic grandees were cowards not to tell Biden and Harris to both step aside and let a proper Primary season happen.
Its too late now.

McConnell is spineless personified. I cannot wait to see who Trump picks as his running mate !!!!

Who do you think will win @Talkinpeace ?

Apparently a fair few wish they were not the only options

And yet they are and no one polls close. It’s a puzzle!

Abhannmor · 10/02/2024 18:24

Presumably Trump will pick some charisma void as VP. A man - probably - who is a right wing libertarian and widely despised. Could be most GOP senators or governors I suppose.

Who could the Dems have selected though. Is there even one you could mention in the same breath as FDR or Kennedy.

As for Reagan being a good President....look at the homeless. That's all on him. Closed mental hospitals. Crushed unions. It all leads back to the bad actor...

Talkinpeace · 10/02/2024 18:42

@EasternStandard I try not to think about who will win.
Whatever the outcome will be bad for the rest of us.

@Abhannmor
FDR hid his disability - would have been crucified in the modern press.
JFK's health issues and infidelities would have been a liability in the current age.

Options : Gretchen Whitmer, Pete Buttigieg and frankly Blinken has shown he could do the job. There are some cracking congresswomen bubbling up as well.

And his father’s rampant corruption and mob links.

More than bubbling up - already better candidates but blocked by men who don't want a woman as president.

Will be interesting to see who the candidates are in 4 years time and what reason is given for them not having been fielded in this election.

Talkinpeace · 10/02/2024 21:04

The Democrat party has sadly fallen down "woman is a feeling" to appease the "progressives"
and thus has lost sight of the middle ground.

Whitmer could have run a good fight
and Stacey Plaskett is on the "future" list
but reality must intervene

TempestTost · 10/02/2024 21:10

YankSplaining · 10/02/2024 13:12

Kamala Harris doesn’t really have enthusiastic supporters in the US. Lots of liberals object to how she handled cases when she was a prosecutor, and lots of conservatives figure she’s a “diversity hire.” Which it appears she is, seeing as Biden, months before picking her as a running mate, announced that whoever he picked would be a black woman.

I haven’t run across anyone who can make a detailed case for Kamala Harris as a politician, strictly on her merits. A couple sentences in, it always turns to the “symbolism” of having a black and Indian woman as VP. When she was running for the Democratic presidential nomination, her campaign had little support and little money and she dropped out before the New Hampshire primary (the NH primary being a significant race in the primaries).

Yeah, she falls pretty much under "not presidential material." Some of the idiotic comments to come out of her mouth are pretty astounding.

Now Taylor Swift - I'm not sure if I'd be on the same page with her politics, but she might do alright, I think she's smart and extremely hard working.

TempestTost · 10/02/2024 21:14

EasternEcho · 10/02/2024 13:22

I don't have a good grasp over how the US political system works, but in general challenging incumbent presidents within the same party is messy business. The party prefers to keep the field clear. History would indicate that when a party changes the presidential candidate the election is usually lost. Moreover, history seems to favour incumbent presidents for second terms in most cases. In this case it was Biden who beat Trump last time, and it seems the safer route to take.

I think this may be the explanation.

However - in this instance I think it's the wrong choice. There are too many signs that he is no longer fit, and people don't think Harris has what it takes either.

I don't know that it will make many people choose Trump instead but it will make some stay home I suspect.

What should happen, and really months ago, is Biden should have withdrawn from the next election due to ill health and allowed them time to find a new candidate.

it drives me mad when these vain old people think they are indispensable and won't step out of the way in time

I don't think its vanity keeping him there - he's reported to have said he only stood for election to keep Trump out of office. All the other Democrat candidates weren't up to it.

As for Kamala Harris - it's widely acknowledged she's been a dud VP, pretty useless and isn't popular. If she were to run for president against Trump he'd win by a mile.

Where IS she? She has been completely invisible for the last three years.
