To think I don't owe this person a refund?

Sold something on Vinted. An item of children's clothing. It cost around £25 new and I sold it for a few pounds. It was barely used so like new.

I sell a lot on there and I'm always over cautious about condition of items and haven't had any problems.

The person is complaining that it doesn't fit and suggesting it's been tumble dried. It 100% hasn't. I was everything on a cool short wash and air dry. They are after a refund but don't want to send the item back understandably because sure of postage.

In my opinion it wasn't a small fitting item or I'd have mentioned this in the listing.

I had this, a never worn dress which the buyer said had a hole in it. I said I'd refund if she returned it. This was followed by some nasty messages from her. I ended up refunding her-it was about £5 and I thought life is too short to quibble over that amount.
Still doesn't sit well that she ended up with a new fat face dress for free though!
Definitely put me off Vinted selling.

You should have insisted on a return and reported the messages to vinted

TheSilkLady · 10/02/2024 14:23

You’re not a business. It’s the spirit off vinted that if you buy something it does fit you sell it on. Chase them

Bamboobzled · 10/02/2024 14:26

I hate Vinted. People always want something for 50p even if they know fine it's worth way more than the pittance its listed for. Then there's the people I've been unfortunate enough to deal with, one cancelled a sale after I'd literally just posted and got home to mark it posted to see he had been refunded! I was fuming as I was well within the posting time limit. Vinted just basically shrugged their shoulders.

Cerealkiller4U · 10/02/2024 14:33

yoire 100% ok

Did you sell it as new without tags or as very good? Because it wasn't new

I sold it as very good condition. Which it was.

I don't try to pass things off as new if they've been worn.

EBay do the same and I closed my account for that reason. If it wasn’t for sellers, these sites couldn’t operate, but in the event of problems they always come down on the side of the buyer and hang the seller out to dry. I’ve had buyers report items not received despite proof of delivery - one buyer collected an item in person and then claimed a refund saying I hadn’t posted it. I had specified cash if collecting so that paypal buyer protection didn’t apply but EBay advised he had the right to use Paypal and then sided with him because I couldn’t prove it had been collected. So he got the item and a refund.

I’ve also had buyers damage items and then return them for refund, saying they’ve been received in that condition - despite listing photos showing otherwise. And as you say, they want things for next to nothing. It’s just not worth the effort.

She has to either raise a case or refund. If she does nothing, Vinted will release the funds and she will be too late to do anything. You will get auto feedback so ignore her

Lighteningstrikes · 10/02/2024 15:37

You’re being scammed.

I wouldn’t get into a long narrative with her, I would simply message/email:

Please return the item for refund.

Thank you.

Repeat if necessary.

What can she do? It’s according to the terms and conditions.

You are being fair/correct.

Shes trying to scam you, which unfortunately happens.

You’ll probably find because you’re not falling for her shit, she won’t bother and she’ll keep it, as it’s too much effort for her.

Kisskiss · 10/02/2024 15:57

She’s trying it on, it doesn’t matter if she hasn’t clicked received yet as it will autocomplete very soon anyway.

I’ve had to post back some toys which had been listed as working but were clearly not ( rusty battery leads) at my own expense so Vinted can be a minefield both ways it seems…

Selling online can be such a nightmare. My husband looked for advise on a trade FB page about the value of some tools he had. They were old but never used, and stainless steel which aren’t made anymore. He was advised anywhere between £150-£350. One person offered to buy & the agreed to £150. This was back in early Dec & it’s only been sorted last week. The transaction was done through PayPal & he sent loads of threatening msgs through FB before lodging a complaint. Once we sent PayPal the msgs they said the buyer would return them & then refund them. We were ok with that, both would have had to pay postage but he’d get his money back, us the tools. Then all of a sudden PayPal said they were refunding him & fining us & wouldn’t get the goods back 🤯 resorted to calling PayPal and the lady we spoke to was great & credited up back the line, and the original sale value. It was so stressful. I think some people are just chancers who see what they can get away with. I would fight refunding her.

2under4 · 10/02/2024 17:15

"Sorry it doesn't fit as expected - no problem, will process refund as soon as I receive the item back here. Please send tracked, so there's no confusion with the post".

Vinted will side with you, if it comes to it. But wouldn't worry, it's a storm in a teacup - if they're really annoying, block them x

mommybear1 · 10/02/2024 17:26

I've found vinted pretty good with this issue. I sold an item which was in 2 parts buyer claimed not to have the second part and wanted a refund. I asked for it to be returned they refused. I was confident they had both parts as it had been difficult to parcel up. Vinted's t&c's are clear on this buyer needs to return the product and pay postage - screenshot attached.

babyproblems · 10/02/2024 18:18

They’ll be responsible for postage so if you sold it say for £3 it’s unlikely to be worth it for them, it actually might cost them more to return! Say she will actually lose money and therefore best bet is to simply resell it herself for the same money.

Sounds like this person is trying it on. Having said that there are some knobs selling things on Vinted. I bought a shirt from a brand that I always buy from and buy small and medium and know the fit well. I ordered a medium shirt and it was fooooking tiny in every way. I am five foot 3 and it was like a belly top. I was well annoyed and if I resell, I will make sure I write this on the listing.

I sell loads too and had this a couple of times, I've offered for them to return it only. If you offer to return only they can't get a refund. They try it on in hope you say to keep it.

Agree. Return only, and then refund.
Kids are different sizes. Not your fault.

NanaRant · 10/02/2024 18:44

I've had this twice (e-bay). First time I put in the listing it was a small fit and listed it at the smaller size (and said label says Y, but I think this size is a smaller X. Boy's jacket, new with tags)...she said too small for my Y sized child, can I return? Eh, no!
Second time was "I see you are selling this dress in green, I have bought your pink one, but the colour drains me, can I swap?" Eh, no, who knows if she smoked, had BO, wore it to a function (It was an expensive dress - £60). I ignored and she ended up giving me good feedback!
I think on both occasions, buyers were at it. I have had genuine people say things got broken in the post (with pics, etc) and sent part-refunds straight away with genuinely friendly exchanges. The majority of items I have sold go through without a hitch, it is the entitled few that try to take the piss.

Lewiscapaldiscat · 10/02/2024 18:44

I purchased a very good child’s swimsuit and it came complete with shit stains on the crotch! Had to pay to return - absolutely vile - put me off ever buying again.

I sold and buyer claimed it had arrived until I provided proof of delivery - they disappeared- this has happened twice!

JFC- some people are not right.

I bought some dungarees for a baby, they were ‘barely worn’ - £10. They arrived faded and threadbare. I messaged the seller and she told me they were a hand me down from her sisters kid, and WAIT FOR IT had been passed down through her own 4 kids. She then told me she must have much lower standards than me because they looked like new to her and she never gets to buy ‘new clothes’ because she had 4 kids. The absolute chancers you find on Vinted 😂
Most of the time it’s ok though.

AboutYouTalk · 10/02/2024 19:35

YANBU. They want a refund but don’t want to send the item back? If it doesn’t fit that’s not your fault (unless you listed the wrong size). I’ve bought items off Vinted and even if not happy I either give to charity or re-sell as items are so cheap.

Woodyandbuzz1 · 10/02/2024 19:37

Wetblanket78 · 10/02/2024 10:11

No don't give her a refund. Ask her to take a picture with of the child with it on. She might be scamming you. She could sell it on.

Think you'd come across a bit weird if you start asking for photos of other people's children 😄

Teddleshon · 10/02/2024 19:38

I’m so bored of people who want all of the upside of buying stuff cheaply second hand but none of the downside. I recently sold a pair of shoes that retailed for £500 for £50 and the buyer wanted a refund on the basis they were “uncomfortable”. I sell a lot on eBay and am pathetically grateful when I have nice buyers who appreciate their bargain.

JustlikeElllie · 10/02/2024 19:43

I have generally found Vinted to be really good. I've sold over 100 items and the only other problem I've had was a parcel going missing which eventually made its way back to me.

I've bought a handful of things too which have been excellent. I did buy some trainers in my size which were a bit small fitting, correct size so that's just the way it is. I've been able to wear them, but otherwise I'd have just sold them on.

You're taking a bit of a chance that you might not like something or it might not fit well but there are some real bargains.

Obviously if something is in disgusting condition or damaged then that's a different matter.
