Child first MMR vaccine at age 3.5 years old

Hi All,

did any of you had their child first MMR vaccine at age 3 or more?

if yes how it went? Were there many side effects ?

I wanted to delay my little ones as he was acting very strange after his last sets of vaccines when he was 18 months old.

He had staring spells and was blinking a lot for months and I got a fright 😔

i am honestly very nervous about this MMR.

thank you.

Still more likely that 2 eye problems are linked than that the vaccination caused blinking/staring.

Throckmorton · 09/02/2024 19:29

One in five people who get measles will end up in hospital because of it. I'd take the vaccine (and the microscopic risk of side effects from it) every day of the week.

I had mine at the usual childhood age, but I had to have it again as an adult as a blood test showed I had no protection from it. Absolutely no side effects what so ever.

They didn't give MMR in the UK until the early 80s I think? I never had it as a child. My younger brothers did

And about 2 in every 1000 who get it will die from it. https://www.cdc.gov/measles/symptoms/complications.html

Edited

Terrifying, isn't it?

OP, would you buy a raffle ticket if the chance of winning was 1 in 500? If you would, then you should vaccinate, timely and properly.

I say this as someone who had 1/500 pregnancy complication and has a close colleague who had the same complication. A mortality rate of 0.2% is significantly higher than I'd ever be comfortable with!

Is measles worse than it used to be or is there another reason for it? I just remember as a DC everyone got it and I don't remember anyone going to hospital. Maybe I just didn't realise as I was a DC. Genuine question.

tempnameforadvice · 09/02/2024 19:54

People delaying / refusing jabs are the reason the measles rate has shot up.

Vaccinate your children. Vaccines don't cause "staring spells".

Jesus.

Eightfour · 09/02/2024 20:00

So first the reason was odd blinking, then it was because of low immune system, now it was because your child lost skills(??) Any thing else up your sleeve OP?

I was asking people about their experiences vaccinate late.

I never said I won’t.

i honestly do not understand why people have to be so rude to one another.

you are not my child mother you were not here to see what is happening to him as I was not there with your child to say what is normal and what is not.

you know your child the best and if you would say something was not right with her/him I would never ever say that you are saying silly things or your feelings are not valid .

it was a big mistake to write in this group.

According to the WHO pre vaccine 2.6 million people died every year from measles and now it’s about 128,000 (most of those under 5). So I don’t think it was any less deadly before. I think perhaps we just recognise how dangerous it is now and treatments are better so people will be hospitalised more quickly to help prevent dying.

I am just fed up of the faux naivety “oh I am scared about vaccines” that is all over Mumsnet. My patience is gone. Threads like this put parents off vaccinating and now we have a situation where there are measles outbreaks when there doesn’t need to be.

It is very obvious you do not want to vaccinate your child as you are jumping on any post that vaguely suggests you shouldn’t.

If my child had a sudden change in behaviour I wouldn’t just think vaccines obviously caused it, let me delay other vaccines and hope he doesn’t die from a preventable disease in the meantime. I also wouldn’t let my anxiety about something that has been proven safe over and over again make decisions that put my child at risk of serious illness and death.

Oh fgs get the needle in their arm. It's medical advice.

sunglassesonthetable · 09/02/2024 20:41

I don't understand the " delaying " thing tbh.

Are you delaying because you want more time to think or decide or are you delaying because you think age is relevant ?
Genuinely?

Londonrach1 · 09/02/2024 20:45

Growing up a neighbour s child died of measles due to no vaccine...this was the 90s. Yabu. Measles is an awful disease that can kill or give a child a disability. If you worried talk to the nurse. Sounds like your child has potentially something separate to vaccine. Have you mentioned this to gp.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 09/02/2024 21:22

I had mine aged 42 and 43 @MimiDuncan when I changed jobs within the NHS and it was picked up by occupational health that I wasn’t vaccinated (too old to have had it as a baby!).

Now, due to the outbreaks of measles in the uk they’re encouraging all staff to check if they’ve been vaccinated and if not the vaccines are being made easily accessible to all staff. It’s our duty to protect ourselves and our patients from these potentially very serious illnesses, just as it’s your duty as a parent to protect your dc, and by virtue everyone else that they come into contact with by getting them vaccinated. If everyone who can be vaccinated is vaccinated then we’ll see the end of these outbreaks.

Food for thought

SavageTomato · 09/02/2024 21:22

The only time I've seen that zoning out was actually in the definitely un vaxxed child of a friend. Fuck all to do with it. Unless it was a way for the poor lad to check out for a bit. Wouldn't blame him.

Crooklodge · 09/02/2024 21:56

My 15yo just got her second one (pretty sure she had the doses as individuals as there were genuine supply problems at the time, I'm very far from an anti vaxxer) but anyway, she was flagged up as only being one dose. The nurse phoned me to double check I was ok to go ahead, and then again called as dd told them dh is immunosuppressed.

she's all sorted now, I'm happy for it, she's happy for it. Dh hasn't died...

Oh FFS @Parentofeanda PLEASE don't mention autism on a vaccination thread! Has that twat Andrew Wakely not killed off enough people?! The damage he did with his falsified results in the 80s to flog his own vaccine has caused horrific repercussions.

One more time ---- MMR does NOT cause autism!!!

OP vaccinate your child. Do some serious, proper reading of actual research. There is a reason why it is so heavily pushed; the consequences of not vaccinating can be fatal.

Exactly this!! Listen up those down the back!!
We are reaping the impacts of that evil man now, with this disease coming back!!
Not to mind the more recent anti vaxers jumping on the bandwagon!!
Vaccinate your children FFS!!
Note, I know some people can genuinely not have them, so it's even more important important that everyone else does!!

Orangelemonclemon · 09/02/2024 22:26

@MimiDuncan @sunglassesonthetable

Yes, we have decided that there are some vaccines that dc is eligible for that we will not take. We have four lists. Vaccines happy to take as scheduled, not taking, undecided and vaccines we are taking on a delayed schedule. We have mmr on the undecided list. Since we made the decision to research all of the vaccines and viruses, we have become quite interested in following the stats for the UK (we do this via the uk gov website and the public health scotland website). We live in Scotland, recorded case numbers are tiny. Should this change, we will definitely reconsider as we have no concerns about the mmr vaccine over and above general vaccine risks which are extremely low.

There is a really interesting book called Bad Pharma by Ben Goldacre that i would highly recommend. Its not actually about vaccinations but it really made me think about the pharmaceutical industry and take more of an active interest in drugs. Specifically if the threat of a virus is very low, why would you sign up for a medical intervention to prevent it?

I am very aware that as a country, the lows stats across the vaccinated viruses are thanks to those who have been vaccinated but ultimately the world we live in is unfair and for as long as the vast majority of people are prepared to take all offered vaccinations as per the regular schedule, everyone, vaccinated or not feels the benefit.

sunglassesonthetable · 09/02/2024 22:28

what's the point of a 'delayed' schedule as opposed to just not taking a vaccine?

sunglassesonthetable · 09/02/2024 22:29

@Orangelemonclemon

Eightfour · 09/02/2024 22:31

@Orangelemonclemon - what qualifications do you have in this area?

Orangelemonclemon · 09/02/2024 22:44

@sunglassesonthetable we have delayed vaccines when we wanted to take it but not as scheduled.

@Eightfour i have no qualifications in vaccinology neither does dh. We exclusively do all our research on the UK Gov and Scottish health websites so all the stats and details of the viruses come from the government and the vaccine specific information comes from the pharmaceutical company. All the info from the little white booklet that would be in the vaccine box is available on the UK gov website.
