Child first MMR vaccine at age 3.5 years old

Hi All,

did any of you had their child first MMR vaccine at age 3 or more?

if yes how it went? Were there many side effects ?

I wanted to delay my little ones as he was acting very strange after his last sets of vaccines when he was 18 months old.

He had staring spells and was blinking a lot for months and I got a fright 😔

i am honestly very nervous about this MMR.

thank you.

DD had hers just before starting school at just under 5.
I had reasons for delaying it. She had all her other vaccines at the normal ages. She had the booster at 17.

Do you think the UTI and conjunctivitis were linked to 1) vaccines from 2 years ago 2) epilepsy or similar neurological disorder 3) something else??

Seriously, listen to the medical advice.

Oh no the UTI came before the vaccine and lasted after the vaccine for a good few weeks . My girl got conjunctivitis before so I don’t think these are related to the vaccine ( maybe low immune system)

however the staring spells ( not sure if epilepsy or not ) and blinking tic were related I believe

Than you . How was she after the vaccine at age 5? Any side effects?

My aunt had measles when she was 13, no vaccine available then. She was very poorly and it left her with a lifelong disability. Severe speech impediment, difficulty walking, reduced use of her hands. She never worked, although she did eventually live independently. Pretty sure she would want every child who could be, to be vaccinated

So so sorry to hear that, 😔😔

OP if your child has a suspected low immune system do you not want to ensure they are as protected as possible? It seems logical you’d try and increase their immunity rather than delay vaccines.

FWIW my child had the MMR at the recommended ages, the second MMR dose just last week and had no side effects, not even a fever.

foghead · 08/02/2024 23:40

@MimiDuncan not even fever but honestly, people could give you all their personal stories (and I was terrified by a few and reassured by many) but you'll have your own experience. Good luck.

I’ve read on lots of pages that people with low immune system can not get the MMR

Has anyone actually suggested that your DC not get scheduled vaccines? Have you asked a GP that question?

It's not unusual for perfectly healthy toddlers to have small tics like blinking. If the neurologist wasn't concerned, I would doubt that anything you noticed in your 18 month old was serious or related to the vaccine.

Eightfour · 08/02/2024 23:50

I can see advice saying you shouldn’t get it if you have a severely weakened immune system due to chemotherapy or taking immunity suppressing drugs in preparation for a transplant, but this is not the level you are speaking about.

I think you’re getting confused with people on immune-suppressants. They can’t have the MMR as it’s a ‘live’ vaccine.

DinnaeFashYersel · 08/02/2024 23:53

What you actually need to worry about is death if life changing disabilities caused by measles which is surging across the UK amongst the unvaccinated.

What pages? Can you share them? If you are referring to children with cancer who are under active treatment and immunocompromised, the advice is also to create a ring of protection around the child by ensuring all their close contacts are vaccinated, and that the child has limited contact with other people, others are expected to wear masks, etc. Are you taking those precautions?

It’s terrifying isn’t it. A family member is partially blind due to measles as a child. I took my child as soon as they were eligible for their vaccines. The amount of comments I’ve had from people disapprovingly asking “if I’d done my research” shocked and saddened me.

To be fair I've been advised not to have the MMR as it's a live vaccine and I'm neutropenic
I couldn't have it as a child due to an egg allergy. Had rubella vaccine separately but I've never had a measles or mumps one

Don’t know why they don’t design a ‘dead’ MMR vaccine so that people who really really need one (immune compromised people like you and many others such as those on immune suppression) can actually have it! Like they do with the flu vaccine. The nasal one is live, the jab isn’t.

I wonder if it’s because the live virus gives lifelong immunity whereas flu is always mutating so the vaccine only needs to last a year as they will need to renew it anyway? Just a complete guess but interested if someone with actual knowledge knows.

StarTwirl · 09/02/2024 00:14

Well if you you love your DC and don't want them to die unnecessarily I'd say get over yourself and get them vaccinated

Does it mean that you had low neutrophils in blood?

OP posts:
Paw2024 · 09/02/2024 00:18

@MimiDuncan yes, I was diagnosed as an adult
I also get a lot of UTIs as I can't fight infection

Personally I would ask to have the bloods redone and see where the neutrophils are at, if it was a one off or if it's a pattern

StarTwirl · 09/02/2024 00:18

Well how about you don't vaccinate your DC and tell us the outcome when they catch measles, meningitis or rubella

You have literally given her a bone

Rolls eyes

Paw2024 · 09/02/2024 00:22

@StarTwirl I don't think that's unreasonable given her DC had low neutrophils! The condition I have is a lot more common in children and rare in adults
If the neutrophils were a one off then fine but given I was undiagnosed for 8 years, the UTIs jumped out at me
All it would be is one blood test to check them, it's not a big delay

I'm very pro vaccine despite the fact I can't and haven't had my MMR

Barleysugar86 · 09/02/2024 00:57

I would advise talking to your GP for reassurance, or maybe look into purchasing the single vaccinations privately if you feel it might be easier for him? Possibly the GP might be able to prescribe single vaccinations if they agree that may have been an adverse reaction to the others.

One thing I do think though is that most vaccine adverse reactions (not the expected immune type symptoms like fever) are pretty immediate- hence why they make you wait the 15 minutes for observation. I think a lot of the things people think are down to the vaccination are coincidental - horrible things happen to people every day and when you look at these on a global scale- some of those horrible things will happen to fall close to vaccinations too. If it's something like SIDS people where they can't find a cause people will try to find one to make it make sense.

I had a fish and chips takeaway a couple of months ago and was throwing up and really ill that night. I felt really mad thinking they gave me bad fish. But the rest of the family had had it too and were absolutely fine until a couple of days later, then my toddler threw up as well, and then it worked its way through the family. So in hindsight I'm pretty sure it was just a bug. But if it was just me who had eaten it that night and just me sick I would have been very sure in my head it was the food, I would have never gone back to that takeaway ever again and would probably have warned neighbours not to eat there it made me very ill etc... you know? I feel like this probably happens a lot with the vaccinations too.

For what it's worth my mother nearly died as a child from measles and when recovered she'd lost 90% of her hearing which has affected her life greatly. I really do urge you to try and find a way to get your little one protected if you can.
