To think my lunch was not bad?

NameChange278 · 08/02/2024 15:39

Just chatting at lunch around food habits and failing to bring lunch from home - a colleague commented my lunch was unhealthy and too much salt and sugar as it was shop bought / ready made. I didn't think it was an unhealthy lunch:

  • shop bought salad - (Pret - Avocado & Crayfish)
  • a pear
  • small pack of popcorn
  • a coffee

For comparison she had brought a home made chilli and rice (leftovers).

My friends know that I care about them. There’s certainly more to friendship than eating habits.

Unfortunately, I’m like your co-worker, with people that I care about. I drive them crazy with “ that’s too much salt, that’s too much sugar, you shouldn’t drink soda, and you need to exercise.” I do, however, practice what I preach. I don’t want their health to fail them as they age and I try to help them make better choices. But it’s not my business; I butt in anyway.

Wow, you must be popular! I'm afraid if you commented on what I ate rather than heeding your words I would simply think you are a dick! Your family/friends must be very tolerant, as I wouldn't put up with it more than once.

Honestly, adults are capable of thinking for themselves and really don't need someone on a crusade to lecture them about food. Maybe find yourself an actual interest instead of worrying about everyone else's health!

@pineapplesundae you’re not big and you’re not clever.

Beaker1305 · 09/02/2024 20:53

Oops! I had a McDonalds drive through as was driving between meetings! 😂

Do you not eat breakfast? Because if not a Pret salad, pear and popcorn is nowhere near enough food for a WHOLE day. I sense a bit of competitive underating.

No, getofftheplane said that's what she would eat during a day at work, NOT for a whole day. That's fine.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 09/02/2024 21:07

TheDuck2018 · 08/02/2024 16:39

I'm very short, have PCOS and life a fairly sedentary life. Coffee and fruit for breakfast, salad for lunch and afternoon snack is absolutely plenty. I then go home and have a decent dinner. Not undereating, just eating properly - it's not normal or good to be chubby everyone just pretends it is.

Until your last sentence I was agreeing with you but then you spoiled it by sounding incredibly judgemental and self-righteous!

Yes it was. I wish we'd all ignore the "gosh, you eat all that?" posts. They might go away then. So annoying and pointless.

BlueGrey1 · 09/02/2024 22:17

Looks live a healthy lunch to me, expensive though

Jack80 · 09/02/2024 22:33

It's not for her to comment, ignore, I only comment if I think meals look nice

I am sorry you are getting so much uncalled for abuse.

When I was younger, I ate a huge amount and despite it being fairly balanced, I used to get all sorts of remarks. Frankly, I suspect many on this thread being self-righteous would have been full of such snide remarks, they just lack your self-awareness.

I came to the conclusion that being very slim and eating huge amounts of food was provocative to many women who were overweight. The stigma of weight is unfair and my lunch box rubbed salt into that would. That my lunch was reasonable healthy (just huge in volume) made it worse.

That said, I do think you have a bad habit and are not helping the people you intend to. People are well aware they should eat better but it already feels like they are being told they are not good enough.

pineapplesundae · 10/02/2024 06:09

Not sure why people are so hostile. I assume they are entertaining themselves. The friends and family members that I speak to about diet and exercise are suffering from diabetes and high blood pressure despite only being in their forties and fifties. I do not badger them or beat them over the head; I'm not crazy. I care about them so I mention to them that they may want to change to a healthier lifestyle so that they can enjoy their retirement when the time comes. But I do not harp. Thank you for your kind words.

In 2015, I shared a cubicle in the USA with a man who had a wife (SAHM) and several kids. The result was he had little time to prepare a packed lunch and little money. I would gently tease him about eating rubbish. By 2017, he was dead from pancreatic cancer.
I am not sure what the point of this is, other than I have been wary of teasing on these subjects.
That said, many people on this thread would have probably eye-rolled at my lunches from when I was young. This thread is an orgy of self-righteousness.

48Times11 · 10/02/2024 07:00

I have a family member who lectures provides unwanted 'advice' on whatever people are eating. The fact is she has an eating disorder that she dresses up in her own mind as eating healthily. She also tries the 'I care about you' line. She's about to turn 72 and has a level of anxiety around food that is unhealthy. She has also been instrumental in instilling a pretty serious eating disorder in her own daughter which was evident from an early age (who cuts a banana for their sporty teen in thirds and ekes it out over three days saying bananas have too much sugar?)

The result is is that most members of the family simply refuse to eat with her or catch up with her at any event that has food involved. After several years of telling her to butt out with the response; 'But I care'.

There is nothing wrong with OP;s lunch. And no-one should be instructing another functioning adult as to what they ought to be eating.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 10/02/2024 07:26

Well clearly your next lunch needs to be a large Big Mac meal with a chocolate milkshake and apple pie. You need to look her directly in the eye whilst eating every last bite.

Halfemptyhalfling · 10/02/2024 08:23

Your lunch is less smelly if she heats hers up in the microwave which goes for brownie points in the office... You might get more hungry later as hers has more protein

peakygold · 10/02/2024 09:34

Your colleague is obviously not a MNetter, otherwise she would have brought in a chicken salad made from a bird which had fed the entire family over the course of a week, made stock and seventeen packed lunches. Amateur.

Are you saying this man died from pancreatic cancer because he ate rubbish?
Go and educate yourself before you post upsetting comments. My brother, fit strong, healthy, sporty, died from this horrendous disease....it's pure evil and it doesn't discriminate.

Bit odd to assume that everyone snacks between meals though. Isn't it pretty normal to just eat once during the work day? Not that it's anybody else's business regardless.

I meant I regretted even teasing him about it in hindsight. Well done on being outraged though.
