To think my lunch was not bad?

NameChange278 · 08/02/2024 15:39

Just chatting at lunch around food habits and failing to bring lunch from home - a colleague commented my lunch was unhealthy and too much salt and sugar as it was shop bought / ready made. I didn't think it was an unhealthy lunch:

  • shop bought salad - (Pret - Avocado & Crayfish)
  • a pear
  • small pack of popcorn
  • a coffee

For comparison she had brought a home made chilli and rice (leftovers).

Honestly, who comments on the healthiness or otherwise of other people's lunches? Well, I suppose I sometimes say, "Oh, that looks good," and others might say similar about mine, but I'd never make a negative comment about what other people are eating.

herewegoagainy · 08/02/2024 19:04

If I had a colleague like that I would be tempted to go to the chippy and go back to the office to eat chips and drinking coke whilst proclaiming loudly that it is good to have a healthier lunch for a change.

dailyduel · 08/02/2024 19:09

If the colleague is from a slimming world back ground she’s probably terrified of what’s involved in eating an avocado and how many syns it has and how it’s the work of the devil.

foamfy · 08/02/2024 19:10

have you checked the nutrional content of the salad on the pret website?

Shop bought salads do generally have far more calories than you'd think is possible for leaves and dressings of whopping salt/sugar/bad boy content.

duvetdayy · 08/02/2024 19:15

I think I’d want to cry if someone said this to me. I’m recovered from an eating disorder but still feel terrible about the way I look and don’t have a great relationship with food and can’t inspect or think about what I eat or it spirals. I would feel so awful if someone at work said that to me.

SabbatWheel · 08/02/2024 19:21

Jesus I thought the lunchbox police ended at primary school 🤣
Tell her this next time!

NewUser1111 · 08/02/2024 19:22

Tomorrow I think you should get out a Greggs sausage roll and iced doughnut in front of her and eat them, lasciviously, as the sugar and fat literally drips down your chin

She sounds like she might be a UPF evangelist OP and be appalled at the shop bought bread (and extremely proud of her home cooking)

Mementomorissons · 08/02/2024 19:23

A woman in my last office in East Yorkshire used to make herself a pie, with gravy, bread and butter every day in the staff room microwave and no one said anything apart from the time she once dropped it all over the floor - then everyone commented how sad it was.

Your colleague can mind her own

I'm very short, have PCOS and life a fairly sedentary life. Coffee and fruit for breakfast, salad for lunch and afternoon snack is absolutely plenty. I then go home and have a decent dinner. Not undereating, just eating properly - it's not normal or good to be chubby everyone just pretends it is.

Coffee and fruit for breakfast would hardly be recommended by many nutritionists, so don't claim it's 'eating properly'

TheDogdidGood · 08/02/2024 19:26

Your colleague needs to mind her own business and bog off!

Unusualactualname · 08/02/2024 19:26

Ktime · 08/02/2024 16:56

Surely you would have said that then to give context?

It's not realistic to expect strangers on the internet to conceive the multitude of possibilities of people's lives.

Context on her lunch?

Not your business.

Movinghouseatlast · 08/02/2024 19:27

That salad is very healthy! I love a Pret salad.

AttwoodBerryDee · 08/02/2024 19:28

I had a burger King for breakfast today 🤣

It's none of your co-workers business. Your lunch sounds absolutely fine 😆

Ugh! I can't stand judgy people. As you were talking about bringing in lunch from home vs buying from sandwich shops, then a comment about saving money or knowing exactly what is in your lunch is probably fair enough, but what does it matter to her if your lunch was a five bar kitkat and 2 litres of coke?

@Ktime

you’re wrong

you’re bmi is something like 70-80% what you eat and only about 20% due to exercise

Sallyh87 · 08/02/2024 19:40

I ate a KFC bucket for one, diet starts tomorrow…….😂

Sweden99 · 08/02/2024 19:41

@NameChange278, People have a great deal of hang ups around food and she is probably dealing with her demons. If she is overweight and you are not, she might feel judged and be defending herself.
It is not fair, but perhaps not personal. That does not make it any more fair nor less hurtful.

Surroundedbyfools · 08/02/2024 19:47

I used to work with a tit like this. Constantly commenting on other folks food, how many sugars folk take in their tea ! It’s Noones business what u eat. I literally couldn’t give a shit what other folk eat or drink. Only time I care at work is if it’s stinky fish in a shared space lol

IchGlaubMeinSchweinPfeift · 08/02/2024 19:48

You could've eaten a McDonald's, with a side of 5 mars bars and it isn't anyone's business to comment on.

jhy · 08/02/2024 19:49

Some colleagues just have an opinion on ANYTHING shop brought.

Honeyroar · 08/02/2024 19:57

Next time put her on the spot - say why? Exactly how much salt/sugar is in this meal? I bet she couldn’t actually tell you.

ManonDe · 08/02/2024 19:58

Pickingmyselfup · 08/02/2024 16:23

It's fine!

I had a whole small apple with some peanut butter for a snack followed by one protein bagel with parma ham, cheese, cucumber, philadelphia and mayonnaise.

Probably not the best if we are going to be pedantic, there are carbs, processed meat and fatty cheese and my peanut butter was just cheap supermarket stuff. However I liked it and it was much better for me than a bacon sandwich on white bread covered in butter which I'm always tempted by!

You were happy with your lunch, it might be shop bought but you could make something homemade that was much worse for you like mac and cheese. One of my favourite things but it's got a ton of fat and salt in so a shop bought salad is much better by far!

WHAT??!!

Horrors. Did you not consider trans fats in the peanut butter or colleagues with allergies??!!

Just joking. Your lunch is about my perfect meal. (Although Ive sadly not eaten peanuts in years due to a child's allergies.... coveting peanut butter bigtime).

Apolloneuro · 08/02/2024 19:59

Actually, in the Zoe style of eating, rice isn’t actually that nutritious, so she needs to sshh.

Zanatdy · 08/02/2024 20:05

how rude she was depending on the conversation and context. But I don’t think your lunch is bad at all. As a rule I’m not that keen on shop bought sandwiches but I love pret. I always take my lunch to work and I eat the same daily as it requires little thought, ham & cream cheese bagel thin with salad, and Pom bears, followed by a mini choc bar worth around 70 cals. It’s not particularly healthy but it’s also not that bad and is part of a calorie controlled diet. I just take it to save money and because I don’t get chance to pop out and I drive in, so convenience. I do love left overs but no way would I have the calories for left overs hot meal and then have a second hot meal for dinner

It's OK, it's my only meal of the year 😇

I'm not a huge peanut butter fan to be honest, I find it a bit dry so the apple helped. I did consider putting Nutella on too but I didn't have time to faff and would you put both peanut butter and Nutella on the apple or would it be pointless?
