Just that really, it's shrove Tuesday it is the traditional feast day before the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday. Lent – the 40 days leading up to Easter – was traditionally a time of fasting

I swear I was taught a song at school (in the Uk!) that was old even for our time, with a chorus that went something like:

Hopsa Lisela, Hopsa Marion
Now you’ve finished your work
For today is Sunday
and tomorrow Monday
Tuesday gay, is pancake day
Let’s dance our cares away

Which was definitely English? Anyone else had to sing this horror?

Stephenseseses Day 😂

Baaaaaaaaa you beat me to it. So that's haitch, press, give out, mom and Pancake Tuesday - things mumsnet have taught me are Irish. I already knew the Halloween obsession was fairly unique. Nice to find out cultural differences you never knew existed.

Snugglemonkey · 07/02/2024 17:38

Yabu. Other people are entitled to celebrate whatever they like. It is Pancake Tuesday in our house, because that is what it is to us. You do your thing, we'll do ours.

PictureALadybird · 07/02/2024 17:40

YABU. Nobody calls it “Pancake Tuesday”.

Fionaville · 07/02/2024 17:41

In this house it goes pancake day, then Easter (With plenty of hot cross buns eaten between the two) We don't do lent and are complete none believers in religion. We do however join in with any holiday that includes tasty food.
I get that it bothers you, but it's the world we live in now. Churches are abandoned and there are a lot less believers. I'd probably just be happy that these celebrations are still being recognised by lots of people. One day, they may not be.

PostmanPatAlwaysRingsTwice · 07/02/2024 17:42

Actually I’m doubting myself now. Do I call it Pancake Day or Pancake Tuesday? Possibly both. And I have thrown in the odd Shrove Tuesday too, now I come to think of it.
Definitely just about the pancake for us though.

Wasbedeudetetdas · 07/02/2024 17:43

You call it what you like.
Explain to any DC that the day has different name/different meaning to different folk.
TBH I prefer the name Pancake Day, but tbh I eat pancakes when I fancy them and not when it's a special day!

OchonAgusOchonOh · 07/02/2024 17:04

I have never heard it called Pancake Day but I'm Irish so obviously different traditions. It has been Pancake Tuesday for as long as I can remember and I'm coming up on 60 so that's neither today nor yesterday.

It was only ever referred to as Shrove Tuesday in Christian Doctrine classes in school or at mass and even then the teachers would call it Pancake Tuesday otherwise.

I'm Irish and always hear it being called 'Pancake day'. 😊

Hooplahooping · 07/02/2024 17:44

Ah, the Christians co-opted Yule and made it Christmas. Let us non believers have your shrove day pancakes? Swapsies? Seems only fair.

although probably shouldn’t dig too far into Christian colonisation of indigenous cultures / tradition if we want to keep things light and fluffy (like pancakes!)

PostmanPatAlwaysRingsTwice · 07/02/2024 17:46

Searched WhatsApp chat with DH to check what I’ve called it. Lots of mentions of pancakes all year but the only reference to the big day is ‘El Día Del Pancake’ so there’s another alternative.

Not everyone is religious but still want to mark the day.

That makes no sense, if you are not religious why would it matter to you to mark the day ?

OchonAgusOchonOh · 07/02/2024 17:47

Googi · 07/02/2024 17:28

My very Catholic Irish granny called it Pancake Day

But was that in England? I have never heard it called Pancake Day in Ireland. All the advertising/reportage on TV/radio/newspapers/supermarkets refers to Pancake Tuesday

Pancake party.

Moodicum · 07/02/2024 17:49

But I don’t believe in Jesus and I do believe in pancakes 🤷🏼

Exasperateddonut · 07/02/2024 17:49

I feel paganism is my calling. Love a bit of feasting 🥰

Give out! Yes! And bold as well. That one will always catch me out. Naughty sounds so wrong when discussing small children Blush

When you all piled into the car, mam get's the 'immersion fear' and someone is despatched back into the gaff to check 😂😂😂

DillDanding · 07/02/2024 17:53

When I was a child, we called it Shrove Tuesday, but we were Catholics and Lent was a big deal.

For my kids, it’s always been pancake day.

CactusMactus · 07/02/2024 17:53

I love Pancake Day!

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 07/02/2024 17:54

WE EAT PANCAKES NOT SHROVES IF YOU DON’T LIKE IT THERE’S THE DOOR 😉
