Just that really, it's shrove Tuesday it is the traditional feast day before the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday. Lent – the 40 days leading up to Easter – was traditionally a time of fasting

It's pancake day...that's what it is...it's the day every year we say we must do this more regularly then a year goes past and realized we havent

Meagainnewname · 07/02/2024 21:45

Oh by the way………. you can eat pancakes any time, they’re not only to be eaten 47 days before Good Friday 🤣🤣🤣

Royaly82 · 07/02/2024 21:45

I've never heard anyone call it Pancake Tuesday before? If I did...that would probably annoy me too 🤣

CurlewKate · 07/02/2024 21:46

I'm an atheist-but we call it Shrove Tuesday. Tradition, innit?

JaneJeffer · 07/02/2024 21:46

Why would you not say Pancake Tuesday when it's always on a Tuesday? Pancake Day implies it could be any random day!

Exactly!

Bignanny30 · 07/02/2024 21:49

I agree with OP, it’s the same as this new trend for calling Christmas ‘the holidays’

Yerroblemom1923 · 07/02/2024 21:49

Well we can't call it Pancake Tuesday if it falls on a different day one year.....! I'm sticking with Pancake Day - covers all bases.
Originally a Pagan celebration that the Christians pinched as they do.

HoneyButterPopcorn · 07/02/2024 21:49

Or you don’t need to say the Tuesday because it’s always on a Tuesday!

more importantly - favourite toppings…

lemon and sugar
butter and sugar

Pancake Tuesday could be any Tuesday.

Tukmgru · 07/02/2024 21:49

“Just that really” as the opener to your post is far more annoying than Pancake Day as a term.

I would put money on you not knowing what the ‘shrove’ in Shrove Tuesday means. Are you shriven? No, you’re just a knob.

Again, it's not new, it's the normal, traditional term in Ireland and OP was watching Irish TV.

And the holidays are more than just Christmas. It's nice to be inclusive. Also not new either, that must be around ages at this stage.

Egghead68 · 07/02/2024 21:57

Pancake Day

cerisepanther73 · 07/02/2024 21:59

@scrambledeggsandbeans

I can amagine in primary schools at least be taught about shrove Tuesday religious meaning too,

I do get that it gives it bit more meaning to know the orgin of historical cultral significance of traditions of the UK 🇬🇧 too...

It's The Christmas

How did you get over the Christmas @JaneJeffer ?

JaneJeffer · 07/02/2024 22:09

It was quiet @OchonAgusOchonOh Wink

billycat321 · 07/02/2024 22:10

In olden days it was a way of using up perishable milk, eggs and fat and filled you up before a long period of fasting (Lent)

Ah sure isn't that the best type @janejeffer

TheWelshposter · 07/02/2024 22:15

I've definitely heard Pancake Tuesday. I love it but don't do Lent ..I think we eat more chocolate in that period than any other time!

MixedCouple · 07/02/2024 22:20

Same could be said for all the Pagan/Christian holidays all year round.

Radiat · 07/02/2024 22:23

Pancake Tuesday is definitely the usual phrase where I live. I’m Scottish, I don’t think I remember hearing Shrove Tuesday used in outside of TV, or maybe school.

Thatcat · 07/02/2024 22:23
