Just that really, it's shrove Tuesday it is the traditional feast day before the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday. Lent – the 40 days leading up to Easter – was traditionally a time of fasting

Who cares, pancakes are crap anyway 🤷‍♀️

Thank you. I did not know this and stand corrected!

I didn't know it was an Irish thing either! I thought Pancake Tuesday was universal and Pancake Day a shortening.

There are more than 40 days between Shrove Tuesday and Easter sunday ..... check your calendar. People who don't understand Lent are almost as bad as people who call Shrove Tuesday Pancake Tuesday.

StopStartStop · 07/02/2024 20:59

It's all down to money. No-one buys a 'Shrove'. They might buy pancakes, ingredients, frying pans so they aren't left out on Tuesday.

starlight889 · 07/02/2024 21:01

It’s a name of a day. If you really find it that upsetting, I think you need to get out more (or maybe stay in so minuscule things don’t trigger you)

As an atheist I’m happy with that! I shall still enjoy my pancakes though :)

@TiredCatLady I love Mardi gras and every Tuesday is fat Tuesday
(I'm also a tired cat lady 🐈‍⬛)

Nice and instructive thread OP 🙂
I guess both Pancake Thursday and Shrove Tuesday are rather modern, recent names that try to limit the meaning of the day - the former because it points only to a certain type of food instead of every kind of food available, the latter because it points only to the penitential aspect of approaching Lent, creating a kind of Ash Wednesday Eve. The oldest names are more generous though - Mardi Gras/Martes Gordo/Carnevale/Martedi Grasso: everywhere else in Europe it's just about stuffing yourself with any kind of food because you know you'll have to fast hard for the next weeks. The harsher the Lent fasting rules, the more cheerful and abundant the carnival will be (and surely you can't make a proper carnival just with pancakes).

....and Carnival is "day of meat".

@Sceptic1234 exactly!

LuluBlakey1 · 07/02/2024 21:15

I was taught it was Shrove Tuesday because you went to confession to be 'shrived' or 'shriven' ie given absolution before Ash Wednesday, and It was pancake Tuesday because it was about using up the butter and sugar and eggs before the abstinence of Lent.

Caswallonthefox · 07/02/2024 21:15

I grew up in a Christian household, all events were Christian, I.e lent, shrove Tuesday, Ash Wednesday, maundy Thursday.
Nowadays it's known as pancake day. I don't think I've seen it advertised as shrove Tuesday for yonks, due to most people not having a clue about the reasons why.
I'm more put out that american pancake mix is available, they are nothing like 'proper' pancakes and taste weird if you put lemon juice on them.
I know this due to my ds being in charge of buying the ingredients and "not knowing there's a difference".

Why though? They can eat pancakes on any day.

And we can eat Christmas dinner any day of the year, and hot cross buns any day of the year, and Easter eggs any day of the year. They’re festivals and traditions, often bastardised by Christianity from pagan rituals. For most people they have very little to do with worshipping a god, and a lot more to do with celebrating time to relax and enjoy meeting up with family and friends. That’s the enduring legacy of these holidays, regardless of these rituals. There is comfort and joy in traditions and reconnecting with loved ones. They are important regardless of whether one believes in a higher being.

Grammarnut · 07/02/2024 21:25

It's Shrove Tuesday, and also pancake day. Pancakes are a traditional method of getting rid of food not to be eaten in Lent. But the point is that you shrive yourself, you clear yourself of sin for the coming eucastrophe of Easter. Stick with the proper name. Good on you!

SomethingUniqueThisTime · 07/02/2024 20:06

Don’t be snide.
I genuinely don’t understand why you think people in other countries should use the same words as you do for religious/secular occasions?
The majority of people call it Shrove Tuesday or Pancake Day depending on the context and/or their beliefs. People in some regions and adjacent islands also use Pancake Tuesday which is their cultural heritage.
Why ‘hate’ words people use in other countries with different traditions it sounds pretty intolerant especially doing so on a site where the majority of people have those different traditions.
Fortunately despite the best efforts of some politicians stirring up hatred, we are a tolerant and inclusive culture that has a wonderful integration of different traditions. Perhaps you need to consider that before ‘hating’ words others use.

Edited

Adjacent islands? Do you mean neighbouring countries?

Talipesmum · 07/02/2024 21:27

Pancake Day it is for us. We are not religious. We like pancakes 👍

Caswallonthefox · 07/02/2024 21:30

My mother also used lent as a way to give up something every year. She used to drink standard nato tea, one year she gave up sugar, the next she gave up milk, then she gave up tea bags and only used tea leaves. I never could see the point, I mean, I did the same but not over 3 Lents.

In Northern Europe there would come a time in the winter when food supplies were running low, but at the same time spring wasn't to far away. I always think that Mardi Gras, Carnival and Lent come from a point at which people said..... "it's been a while since the mid winter piss up, life's getting a bit dull again, why don't we ) just have a bit of a blow out, eat and drink all the nice stuff we stocked up from last year and then justvtighten our belts and hang on 'cos Summer's not too far away now".

Jif Lemon Day 😀

Easy Peasy Lemon Squeezy ;)

many of us are not religious at all, or non-Christian, and will call it what we feel comfortable with. Pancake day for us always.

Some people get upset about the weirdest of things! (your prerogative, of course).
