Just that really, it's shrove Tuesday it is the traditional feast day before the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday. Lent – the 40 days leading up to Easter – was traditionally a time of fasting

I prefer Pancake Day because I'm not religious, I'm not fasting or giving anything up for Lent and sometimes we have stuff happening on the Tuesday so pancakes are put back a day (or two). If it was Pancake Tuesday we would have missed out.3

SweetBirdsong · 07/02/2024 22:47

I call it Shrove Tuesday. 😊

Snugglemonkey · 07/02/2024 22:47

GreyhpundGirl · 07/02/2024 18:48

It's Shrove Tuesday. It doesn't matter if you're Christian or not, that's literally what the day is called. Christmas and Easter haven't been bastardised to Present and Chocolate Egg Day have they?

Xmas

Easter is already a bastardisation!

Banrion · 07/02/2024 22:49

Pancake Tuesday here 😋

Girlking · 07/02/2024 22:50

Shrove Tuesday = Pancake Tuesday the day you indulge in pancakes with sugar/maple syrup etc. before fasting and giving up treats for lent.

Never heard it called Pancake Tuesday. We call it Pancake Day here!

Exactly

It is if you're an actual Christian. Same as Christmas is bugger all to do with Santa and Easter isn't about chocolate eggs.

But UK isn't a religious Christian country so much as a pagan country wearing a culturally christian cunning disguise.

Pagans are all about the feasting festivals and so yes, for most of us it really is about the pancakes.

Hey you can be Christian and still call Pancake Day, Pancake day. :)

Or, the perfect compromise now- Pancake Tuesday. :)

PerfectTravelTote · 07/02/2024 22:57

Afaik it's always been pancake Tuesday in Ireland. I've never heard pancake day.

Stressedafff · 07/02/2024 23:01

Solocup · 07/02/2024 23:03

No one calls it Pancake Tuesday.
Religion is made up.
Pancakes are awesome.

Pancake Tuesday in Ireland, always has been. Once, as a child my birthday fell on Pancake Tuesday. Was delighted coz of pancakes.

Snugglemonkey · 07/02/2024 23:08

Yerroblemom1923 · 07/02/2024 21:49

Well we can't call it Pancake Tuesday if it falls on a different day one year.....! I'm sticking with Pancake Day - covers all bases.
Originally a Pagan celebration that the Christians pinched as they do.

It will never fall on any other day. Always a Tuesday. Hence, pancake Tuesday!

Ineedwinenow · 07/02/2024 23:09

It’s pancake day in our house, I do know it should be Shrove Tuesday but I’m an atheist, and to be fair I called Easter Sunday “Zombie day” so I’m probably not really suited to this whole conversation and my opinion probably isn’t welcome on the subject of religious dates… but I’ve never heard it called Pancake Tuesday

lol. It’ll be ash day next, just in case it doesn’t fall on a Wednesday like.

Where are you? Do you live in West Brit land?

The Indo is calling it Pancake Tuesday but they're definitely not West Brit. https://www.independent.ie/life/food-drink/its-pancake-tuesday-next-week-here-is-the-secret-to-creating-a-batch-of-perfect-pancakes/41396461.html

Even the Irish Times is referring to Pancake Tuesday, although they do get Shrove Tuesday in to the article too https://www.irishtimes.com/life-and-style/food-and-drink/pancake-tuesday-what-are-the-best-ready-made-pancakes-and-mixes-1.3806900

The Times one is as old article as when I googled they mainly seem to avoid referring to the day as anything.

Is West Brit Land Dublin? I've heard the term before but not sure where it refers to. If so then no.

As a serious Catholic family, we say both Shrove Tuesday and Pancake day. I don’t worry about that. What bothers me is calling the day before Easter Day Easter Saturday when it should be Holy Saturday.

It was Gloria Saturday where I grew up Grin

it was Holy Thursday though

Thehigheroffer · 07/02/2024 23:27

SweetBirdsong · 07/02/2024 23:04

All 3 statements are wrong.

One of them is correct as religion is man made

TeenLifeMum · 07/02/2024 23:28

I grew up in a Christian family, we interchanged shove Tuesday and pancake day.

TeenLifeMum · 07/02/2024 23:31

Oooh dad’s side is Irish, maybe that’s where they came from. Interesting. I’ll ask when I next see my parents.

RoomOfRequirement · 07/02/2024 23:33

I'm a Christian but -

Oh look the Christians are being annoying again.

mrlistersgelfbride · 07/02/2024 23:33

My mum, a church steward, always called it Pancake Tuesday when I was young. I've not heard that for years though, it's pancake day here!

JaneJeffer · 07/02/2024 23:38
