Just that really, it's shrove Tuesday it is the traditional feast day before the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday. Lent – the 40 days leading up to Easter – was traditionally a time of fasting

It’s Mardi Gras if you’re from New Orleans!

neighboursareselling · 07/02/2024 20:14

Some people couldn't care less and have no idea about any religious significance, they just want to eat pancakes and toppings.

Pancake day, pancake Tuesday, whatever , it's an excuse to get the family together and eat something different.

Like having fish (and chips) on Friday, Xmas dinner etc.

“Pancake Tuesdays a very happy day,
and if you don’t give us a holiday we’ll all run away.
where will we run?
down the lane!
to meet the Bobby with the big fat cane!”

Please tell me someone else remembers this song 😂

Me!! I referred to it above but we substituted the name of our headteacher for the Bobby " to see Mr Williams with a big fat cane"

Doesn’t sound like OP has an issue with it being called pancake day, more like the mixing of pancake day and shrove Tuesday to = Pancake Tuesday which I agree with OP is a weird name

Allthestarsarecomingouttonight · 07/02/2024 20:19

It's called skipping day in these parts. We have a very old local tradition of taking our skipping ropes down the sea front and spending the afternoon, well, just skipping. The close the road off and everything. We even used to get the day off school when I was a kid! 😁

It's not a mixing though, it's replacing Shrove with Tuesday, like we've been saying it's the usual name in Ireland and OP is seeing it on Irish TV.

On Irish TV Pancake Day would be a bit weird and Shrove Tuesday overly formal.

allmyliesaretrue · 07/02/2024 20:19

Who would have the energy to even care?

Anonymouseposter · 07/02/2024 20:20

As said above , who cares as long as I get pancakes but now I'm finding Pancake Day as opposed to Pancake Tuesday irritating 😆

reclaimmyboobs · 07/02/2024 18:12

Mmmm, pancakes. Nothing is funnier to me than the shops after work on Pancake Day, rammed with people last-minute buying eggs, flour, milk, golden syrup, lemons, and my favourite, ready-made shake-it-up pancake mix in a squirty bottle – really staying true to the day’s roots.

I’m guessing you’re a big fan of Mrs Brown’s Boys. People in the supermarket buying flour, eggs, and lemons. Hilarity ensues.

PinkflowersWhiteBerries · 07/02/2024 20:24

@echt I have seen your name before. Are you originally from the great metropolis that your name suggests. The place with the legendary Tandoori? I often wondered…

starlight889 · 07/02/2024 15:57

Is it really that deep?

It clearly is to some people, what's your problem?

Meowandthen · 07/02/2024 20:28

I am an atheist so don’t really care what it’s called but it seems that more and more people have no idea about why pancakes are eaten.

It’s a shame not to a knowledge why we have this tradition. I think it makes it more interesting to understand the whys of certain annual events even if you don’t have belief.

IsthisthereallifeIsthisjustfantasy · 07/02/2024 20:29

I'm a practising Christian, but I would never use the language of "shriving". It makes me think of Romeo and Juliet. I wouldn't see a priest to take confession either. So I think the "shrove" word is very outdated for a lot of people, including religious people. We've always called it pancake day in my family.

lemonmeringueno3 · 07/02/2024 20:29

I'm afraid that, as a non Christian, I do not mark lent at all. But I do like pancakes and embrace any excuse to make them. I think just keep your lovely Christian traditions at home and don't worry too much about what other people are doing.

FishPie2 · 07/02/2024 20:33

We had Shrove Tuesday then Ash Wednesday - in a Christian Family.

Pancake Tuesday in Ireland! As I’m sure many others will have said before me by this point.

Cockapoopoopoo · 07/02/2024 20:40

I call it pancake day also

Missedvocation · 07/02/2024 20:41

Aren’t we done with all of this religious nonsense? It’s so backwards.

Thank you. I did not know this and stand corrected!

DinnaeFashYersel · 07/02/2024 20:49

Not everyone is religious

Shoutinglagerlagerlager · 07/02/2024 20:51

Kwam31 · 07/02/2024 15:59

Not everyone is religious but still want to mark the day.

Why though? They can eat pancakes on any day.

OneRedBalloon · 07/02/2024 20:51

Pancake Tuesday in our house 🥞

It's the feast of St Pancake 🙏

The Patron Saint of Jif Lemon juice

TheKeatingFive · 07/02/2024 20:51

Its defining characteristics in our house, is that you eat pancakes that day and it's a Tuesday.

So ... no. We'll stick with what we have, thanks.
