Just that really, it's shrove Tuesday it is the traditional feast day before the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday. Lent – the 40 days leading up to Easter – was traditionally a time of fasting

Very good 👏

Friendlyfishfinger · 07/02/2024 19:51

Pancake Tuesday.

Pancake. Tuesday.

It’s Pancake Day, mate.

I’ve called it Pancake Tuesday all my life, and all my family do as well. People can call it anything they like, as long as I get my share of the pancakes! 😁

Sums up my thoughts completely.

Sallyh87 · 07/02/2024 19:52

Why do you care? Some people are religious, some aren’t. Almost everyone loves pancakes.

Workwhat · 07/02/2024 19:52

I've only heard it called pancake day or shrove Tuesday never pancake Tuesday.

CaramelMac · 07/02/2024 19:54

I’m not religious so I call it pancake day, and I call Christmas Day “present day” and Easter “chocolate egg day”!

You're thinking of Maundy Thursday, that's in Holy Week, at the other end of Lent.

The day before Shrove Tuesday is Collop Monday, the day to eat up the meat.

Definitely never heard that! Thanks, very interesting.

We're atheists. It's pancake day. The best day of the year.

User0224 · 07/02/2024 20:00

I once had a pancake wednesday. Now THAT’S wild.

LookingGlassMilk · 07/02/2024 20:01

I've never heard anyone say pancake day. I've only ever heard pancake Tuesday. I live in Ireland now but I grew up in London and went to catholic schools. Everyone said pancake Tuesday. Maybe it was because most of us had Irish parents.

TMess · 07/02/2024 20:02

Fat Tuesday or Paczski Day for us! We are Christian but not of the Lent observing variety so we just use it as an excuse to eat things for breakfast that we generally oughtn’t.

scrambledeggsandbeans · 07/02/2024 19:44

@SomethingUniqueThisTime sorry didn't know it was only for UK people I thought it was all inclusive. Silly me 🤗

Don’t be snide.
I genuinely don’t understand why you think people in other countries should use the same words as you do for religious/secular occasions?
The majority of people call it Shrove Tuesday or Pancake Day depending on the context and/or their beliefs. People in some regions and adjacent islands also use Pancake Tuesday which is their cultural heritage.
Why ‘hate’ words people use in other countries with different traditions it sounds pretty intolerant especially doing so on a site where the majority of people have those different traditions.
Fortunately despite the best efforts of some politicians stirring up hatred, we are a tolerant and inclusive culture that has a wonderful integration of different traditions. Perhaps you need to consider that before ‘hating’ words others use.

Anonymouseposter · 07/02/2024 20:06

I'm surprised some people have never heard it called Pancake Tuesday. I'm from North West England and it's what we always called it. (Perhaps there's some historical Irish influence) I don't think it's in conflict with observing lent. I know the formal religious name is Shrove Tuesday. There was a song "Pancake Tuesday's a very happy day, If we don't get a holiday we'll all run away" etc.

TheSpruce · 07/02/2024 20:07

In my country we eat donuts instead - we call it Fat Thursday 😁

echt · 07/02/2024 20:09

In the bit of the north where I'm from it's Pancake Tuesday.

TheHennaHairedHarridan · 07/02/2024 20:10

It's the feast of St Pancake 🙏

BuddyBuddyBumBum · 07/02/2024 20:10

Oh, unclench OP! I’m a fully paid up Catholic, I’ll be observing my fast on Ash Wednesday after enjoying my pancakes on Pancake day. I work in a Catholic school and the canteen will be serving pancakes for the kids. I bet the priest will even have one 😱
