My mum was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer I September. She has her first appointment with her oncologist at the end of this months-a 6 month wait to see someone, not even to start treatment!!

Willmafrockfit · 06/02/2024 06:53

he released the prostate issue and made a huge difference to those who got tested, but this is different, more intrusive, but it seems treatable , he will carry on working but not face to face

Sorry for him, as I am sorry for all those diagnosed with cancer. A very good friend died last year with a very aggressive form of cancer. This time a year ago she was enjoying the trip of a lifetime to New Zealand, where she fell ill. She had no idea she was dying.

The King will have a regular full MOT - multiple cancer screening tests which will likely have picked this up early. He will have the very best care, whatever his prognosis, and I wish him the best.

I am simultaneously thinking of all those others with cancer who are being treated, or waiting to be treated, in a hugely overstretched NHS. And if the King needs palliative care, I'm fairly certain it will be very much better than the palliative 'care' afforded to my friend.

No, I'm not a monarchist. But nobody deserves this. The only difference is that he will receive the very best care and stand a far better chance of a full recovery than most.

Maggiethecat · 06/02/2024 08:09

Think there’s a reason BP has released this information but I do wish him well whatever the prognosis.

the80sweregreat · 06/02/2024 08:11

The daily mail headlines were really positive.
I'm sure he'll be fine , but my own heart goes out to those who are trying to overcome this disease with very little help or support
At least the King will receive lots of this

My god that is terrible!!

On the ITV early evening news yesterday, Mary Nightingale was in black, and one of the correspondents she was talking to was dressed in a black suit and black tie. I thought that was in poor taste.

YeahBrackie · 06/02/2024 08:17

I'm wondering if it is pancreatic cancer which is why they've not said which cancer it is?Pancreatic cancer is one of the worst :(

Clawdy · 06/02/2024 08:23

I wondered that too.

My god that is terrible!!

It's awful, we're all devastated. She's had lots of tests during those 6 months but no actual oncology appointment. She has cancer of unknown primary origin.

If they are continuing to test, could it be that they are not sure yet what they are dealing with? Has she seen other specialists?

Pottedpalm · 06/02/2024 08:38

I hope his treatment is successful. William and Kate’s efforts to make the childrens’ childhood as normal
as possible would take a big hit.

That is absolutely terrible. I'm so sorry.

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 06/02/2024 09:08

@Glasshouses102 thats a terribly long wait. Is it because they can’t find the primary? My heart goes out to you all. Having experienced with both my dad and fil I know how stressful it all is.

I'm afraid life doesn't care you were born a titled person , just flesh and blood like us , sometimes your family can have a really shit time , and here it is .

Oh yes, 100%

I’m so sorry, the uncertainty of an unknown primary cancer must be difficult for you all. I work in oncology and we have a consultant dedicated to treating unknown primary cancer , do you know if you have access to this?

Have they managed to take any biopsies from your Mum? Is she symptomatic?

Doubt it. Sunak has said it's been caught early. Pancreatic cancer is rarely caught early and it's one of the cancers you can't screen for.

LINDAHOAD · 06/02/2024 09:33

it is everyone choice to have private treatment and if they choose to spend their money on this that it their business. there are many people who do not have money but choose to spend some of it on their health care rather than other things such as cars or holidays or whatever. that is personal choice. because the nhs is in such a poor state many people who have urgent medical problems are having to do this - it is their choice.

I've had cancer treatment on the NHS and definitely felt like everything they has was thrown my way.

I very much doubt he'll be treated while others are left to die with the same condition. It just doesn't work like that. There are set treatments for different kinds of cancer- that is why treatment for cancer is no better for private patients than the NHS. And it's usually the same specialists treating both sets of patients anyway. The only difference is that private hospitals are more comfortable and you get your own room and nicer food.

That’s simply not true. The 2 week wait pathway is backed up. People can’t get an appointment to see a GP in the first instance at first symptoms. Do you think Charles had to deal with that? Of course not

there are different or more comfortable treatments privately. My father had private treatment and when he needed chemo, it was brought to his home. Surgeries were scheduled in a matter of days and not weeks, it all adds up. Plus then, Charles will have access to other (costly) treatments not licensed in the UK (if it ever came to that)

2dogsandabudgie · 06/02/2024 10:26

Diskneeddisney - But that's not true in all areas, last year I had a suspicious looking mole, did E consult and had a phone call within 24 hours and a GP appointment within 48 hours. I was referred to dermatology under the 2 week pathway and seen within that 2 weeks. Fortunately it was non cancerous.

The problem is we only ever hear when people have bad experiences because my excellent experience above of the NHS isn't newsworthy.

Cloudbuggi · 06/02/2024 10:31

Why are people complaining charles is having private medical treatment? Would you rather he was treated on the NHS?

2dogsandabudgie · 06/02/2024 10:34

Diskneeddisney - Also to add to my post above, it depends on the type of chemotherapy you are having whether you can have it at home. There are some chemotherapies that you can have at home on the NHS, but others have to be administered in hospital even if you go private.
