Where are all the satsumas?

I do not want tangerines, clementines or Johnny-come-lately "easy peelers", whatever the fuck they actually are.

Why are all these inferior bastards available but I can't find a satsuma for love nor money?

AIBU to wish the humble satsuma would make a comeback?

I feel your pain but have found this an ongoing battle. I do not want clementines, tangerines, mandarins or other imposters.

A colleague I used to work with about 10 years ago and I don’t really keep in touch but do still text each other when we find real satsumas in the wild a supermarket.

Butteredtoast55 · 04/02/2024 16:46

First time we have ever not had satsumas at Christmas last year. They're Mr Toast's favourite fruit but have been usurped by 'easy peelers' I refused to pay good money for piddling little, pip-ridden, dry monstrosities .

Soozikinzii · 04/02/2024 16:50

I'm just the same . I only like Satsumas proper light coloured large beautiful satsumas . Nothing else will do . I think I've had about 4 max this winter !

OneTC · 04/02/2024 16:52

Easy peeler is just a name they give to fruits that fit that category, sometimes they'll be satsumas, sometimes Clementine, sometimes nardicots, just depending on season, they aren't all nice at the same time, or cropped at the same time because they come from everywhere

ToffeeShocker · 04/02/2024 16:54

Easy peeler is just a name they give to fruits that fit that category, sometimes they'll be satsumas…

No no no, those little shrivelled fuckers are NEVER satsumas 😡

ginasevern · 04/02/2024 16:59

I love me a satsuma and they were a staple of every childhood Christmas. Tbh they've been pretty absent from the shops in my neck of the woods for many years. They seemed to have been displaced by those fucking abominations called easy peelers. I guess they're cheaper for the supermarkets to stock but I've never met anyone that doesn't moan about them.

OneTC · 04/02/2024 17:00

Got some moro blood oranges today and they're lovely 🤤

marshmallowfinder · 04/02/2024 17:18

Waitrose still has them!

NeedToKnow101 · 04/02/2024 17:21

I miss satsumas so much.

NeedToKnow101 · 04/02/2024 17:22

Or is it mandarins I miss? The flabby skinned ones, with lots of air between the fruit and the skin.

Rachel1509 · 04/02/2024 17:22

I don’t know where they are but AMEN to this post.
I love a satsuma and hate the imposters! What the F are easy peelers, such a crap impersonation they gave it a name to match

BlindurErBóklausMaður · 04/02/2024 17:25

Ocado have them. Think they're on the 2 x £4 offer.

TomatoketchupfromMandS · 04/02/2024 17:30

I agree about easy peelers. The baggier the skin the worse the taste in my opinion. I think tangerines can be quite nice. In all honesty I’m not sure I have always known what small orange I’m eating! I will look out for satsumas from now on!

DrearyLane · 04/02/2024 17:33

Rarely go to Waitrose but this morning they had the goods. All I bought was two packs of satsumas.

local greengrocer sells nardicots, not exactly sure what they are but they’re a blooming close substitute

Toddlerteaplease · 04/02/2024 17:38

I started a thread on this a few months ago. I want satsuma's not easy peeler!

Toddlerteaplease · 04/02/2024 17:40

OneTC · 04/02/2024 14:23

Mineolas are my favourite but you don't get them often

The fruit stall at my hospital sell these. They are nice, but not as nice as a plump juicy satsuma.

HippyCritical · 04/02/2024 17:44

Has anyone seen sweetie grapefruits for sale anywhere?

Fleeceflop · 04/02/2024 17:45

But they don’t fit that category cause they are not easy to peel!

it’ll be a cold day in hell the day I buy an ‘easy peeler’!!!

OneTC · 04/02/2024 17:52

I've been buying the Sainsbury's ones every day for the last week (loose TTD easy peelers 30p each) and they peel super easily and are very juicy and sweet, if anything I prefer them a bit more sharp. I can't remember what variety they were though

Norugratsatall · 04/02/2024 17:53

I don't really mind what they're called as long as they're a) sweet! b) pipless and c) juicy. This season has been diabolical for all three, I've got half a dozen sitting in the fruit bowl (and have been there for weeks) cos no one wants to eat them! They're probably shrivelled tasteless and dry now.

Charlieradioalphapapa · 04/02/2024 17:55

This winter has been the best satsuma here for years. I’ve managed to get them in Sainsbury’s and Aldi with no problem. I’ve been very pleased to see them back as they’re the best I agree. Now they’re harder to find but I think that’s often the case come Feb time.

CaribouCarafe · 04/02/2024 18:15

Sorry I'm missing the point because...clementines are the best.

runs for cover

nonevernotever · 04/02/2024 18:19

Look at the variety, not the headline name. And never ever buy bastard clemenules - sweat watery tasteless things. Clemenvilla, nadorcott or tang gold generally taste much better. But then I like them tangy, and am so sick of everything getting sweeter.

Nerurio · 04/02/2024 18:22

Wait, satsumas are a rarity?! We've been going through bags of them at home, and I've been taking one to work each day - I didn't realise they were hard to come by now!

ParadiseLaundry · 04/02/2024 18:36

I always get confused between the varieties, are satsumas the one with the thin, tight skin that are firm, tangy and sweet?

There are some with a thick, loose skin that are always watery and awful.
